Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis describes a study of polymerisation with the intention of demonstrating the generic feasibility of some control techniques for the production of polymers with prescribed molecular weight distributions. The polymerisation of styrene using thermal and catalytic initiation was used as an exemplar for the purposes of developing the strategies. A number of mathematical models have been developed, including the kinetics of the free-radical bulk polymerisation of styrene initiated thermally and by 2,2'azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) catalyst without consideration of the environment in which the reactions occur. The dynamics of the polymerisation process are described in terms of the first three moments of the distribution of dead polymer. These moments were used to characterise the molecular weight distribution of the polymer for the purposes of control. Further, the constraints of carrying out the polymerisation in batch and semi-batch reactors, continuous stirred tank reactors and a tubular reactor have been modelled. Dynamic optimisation using Pontryagin's minimum principle and the kinetic model was used to solve the minimum batch time problem by considering separately and simultaneously the two optimal policies, for initiator and temperature. These policies yield the minimum batch time to produce a polymer product which satisfies a set of target specifications for the molecular weight distribution. Using the kinetic and reactor models together, and the optimal temperature policy as a reference level, a model based predictive controller was employed to assess whether a realistic implementation of the policy could be achieved. A difficulty in the practical, real time control of polymerisation is the lack of on-line measurement of molecular weight. A preliminary study of a model based, non-linear observer was conducted to estimate molecular weight distribution on-line. It was shown that the estimate is robust in the face of disturbances and uncertainty in the initial conditions.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 886 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Batch chemical processing has in the past decade enjoyed a return to respectability as a valuable, effective, and often preferred mode of process operation. This book provides the first comprehensive and authoritative coverage that reviews the state of the art development in the field of batch chemical systems engineering, applications in various chemical industries, current practice in different parts of the world, and future technical challenges. Developments in enabling computing technologies such as simulation, mathematical programming, knowledge based systems, and prognosis of how these developments would impact future progress in the batch domain are covered. Design issues for complex unit processes and batch plants as well as operational issues such as control and scheduling are also addressed.

Book excerpt: Polymer Chemistry is a subdiscipline of chemistry that focuses on the chemical synthesis, structure and chemical and physical properties of polymers and macromolecules. The principles and methods used in polymer chemistry are also applicable through a wide range of other subdisciplines like Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. Polymer Chemistry can also be included in broader fields of Polymer science or even nanotechnology, both of which can be described as encompassing polymer physics and polymer engineering. This book provides a comprehensive introduction and circumscribes the recent development in the realm of polymer science in a multi-mode model. The book emphasizes both theoretical perspectives along with examples to make readers understand the subject in depth alongside also presents subjective, objective-cum-numerical problems enabling students to prepare for various competitive examinations.
