Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though they are on the steps of the doors to hell, I believe that the unsaved don’t want to know God. Everyone has a conscience, which gives an awareness of right and wrong. The Bible says that God has revealed Himself to each individual through their conscience. What more can God do to warn people? Many are aware of heaven and hell but somehow show no concern. The person who rejects God does not understand the real horrors of this Godless place. This may be because they don’t believe hell exists or they are convinced it would be tolerably better than heaven and nothing can be further from the truth. At this point, they are not preferring hell over God; they are blind to both. They do not perceive the true glories of God, neither do they perceive the true horrors of hell. When they die, they will be shocked beyond words. What sinners want is not hell but sin. The fact that hell is the inevitable consequence of unforgiven sin does not make the consequence desirable. It is truly not what people want — certainly not what they “want most.” Wanting sin is no more equal to wanting hell than wanting chocolate is equal to wanting obesity. However, consuming sin again and again with no regard for repentance will result to eternal damnation. Some want to believe that God would not send anyone to hell. It is a nice thought, but it is simply unbiblical. God certainly does send people to hell. In His justice, He does pass a sentence and executes it. Indeed, worse than that, God does not just send, He throws. Revelation 20:15 reads, “If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire” (ESV). Hell is real. It is a place where many are going but few fully recognize the horrendous fate that awaits them there. It is essential that this truth is not lost but understood and shared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, in this raw account of one doctor's journey to Hell and back ... is the "prescription" that could save the life of someone you love. Addiction can affect anyone - of any occupation, education, or social class. The most common denominator among all addicts though ... is that they once thought it could never happen to them. As Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery at a large community hospital, Dr. Steve Heird was well aware of all this. Yet even as he wrote one illegal prescription after another - all for himself - he refused to believe he had a problem. He was in control. It could never happen to him. But the day came when - tired of playing a game of cat-and-mouse with the DEA, and finally ready to accept help with his problem - Steve had to face his family and go into rehab. Everything that mattered to him - his family, his career, his lifestyle - was on the line, and he risked losing it all, to serve a ten-year prison sentence. "That was one of the worst days of my life" he now says. "I had hurt the people I loved most. I felt overwhelmed with shame and self-loathing. How could I have screwed up so badly?" But there's a silver lining to the cloud that followed Dr. Heird all those years. His personal healing has led to the creation of a system of strategies for recognizing the warning signs - whether in yourself or others - and overcoming any addictions, along with the fear and self-doubt that feed them. In this entertaining and inspiring true-life account, and through his Prescriptions For Awareness healing program, Dr. Heird proves beyond a doubt that NOBODY is entirely "above the reach" of addiction, and no addict need ever feel doomed to remain forever within its grasp.

Book excerpt: Twenty-plus years in the writing, and for an additional ten years, this gut-wrenching, heartwarming story has been silently biding its time, awaiting a channel for expression. A compelling story of young boys bound by faith, courage, blood, sweat, and tears, and how that bonding created the brave young men they became. Hopefully, all who read this account will feel the deep emotions of terror, disappointment, frustration, laughter, love, peace, and joy experienced by the author during his service as a radioman/gunner on a B17G during World War II. Some of the stories contained in this manuscript have never been published or made public. Stationed in the European Theater of Operations in Framlingham, England, Mr. Richardson, USAAF, 8th AF, 390th Bomb Group (H), 571st Squadron, was the recipient of numerous major awards and citations, including Distinguished Flying Cross; Air Medal with 4 Oak-Leaf Clusters; 2 Presidential Unit Citations; Russian Medal of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (on behalf of Boris Yeltsin); Certificate in Recognition of Contribution/Service in liberating France and participation in the Invasion of Normandy, signed by French Secretary of Defense John-Pierre Messeret; French Jubilee of Liberty Medal; and French Legion of Honor Medal.

Book excerpt: The silver-and-black-clad Oakland Raiders fans are the most notorious in American professional sports, with a mythic reputation for cursing, drinking, brawling, and generally wreaking mayhem. The devotion of the team's multiracial, largely blue-collar supporters runs deep, creating a profound sense of community. As Jim Miller and Kelly Mayhew reveal in this hair-raising and entertaining new book, the self-described Raider Nation, smitten with its outlaw mystique, provides a gritty alternative to California's sunshine-and-granola image. Over the course of the harrowing 2003 season, Miller and Mayhew explored the reality behind the myth and interviewed legions of rabid Raiders fans—from suburban families to bikers—while attending games in the “Black Hole” (the rowdiest section in Oakland's stadium), frequenting sports bars, and crashing tailgate parties. Featuring the extraordinary photography of Joseph A. Blum, Better to Reign in Hell is both a rollicking tale of obsessive fandom and a fascinating study of the intersection of class, race, gender, and community in professional sports.

She did not realize she had been on a life long quest for the answer to "Where was God during the Holocaust?" until she found her answers. In her search for meaning, and then healing and reconciliation, she gives us a rare opportunity to witness the extremes of behavior a seeker may turn to before finding a way to end the cycle of assault and retribution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the voices of atomic bomb survivors and the new science of forensic archaeology, Charles Pellegrino describes the events and the aftermath of two days in August when nuclear devices, detonated over Japan, changed life on Earth forever. To Hell and Back offers readers a stunning, “you are there” time capsule, wrapped in elegant prose. Charles Pellegrino’s scientific authority and close relationship with the A-bomb survivors make his account the most gripping and authoritative ever written. At the narrative’s core are eyewitness accounts of those who experienced the atomic explosions firsthand—the Japanese civilians on the ground. As the first city targeted, Hiroshima is the focus of most histories. Pellegrino gives equal weight to the bombing of Nagasaki, symbolized by the thirty people who are known to have fled Hiroshima for Nagasaki—where they arrived just in time to survive the second bomb. One of them, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, is the only person who experienced the full effects of both cataclysms within Ground Zero. The second time, the blast effects were diverted around the stairwell behind which Yamaguchi’s office conference was convened—placing him and few others in a shock cocoon that offered protection while the entire building disappeared around them. Pellegrino weaves spellbinding stories together within an illustrated narrative that challenges the “official report,” showing exactly what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki—and why. Also available from compatible vendors is an enhanced e-book version containing never-before-seen video clips of the survivors, their descendants, and the cities as they are today. Filmed by the author during his research in Japan, these 18 videos are placed throughout the text, taking readers beyond the page and offering an eye-opening and personal way to understand how the effects of the atomic bombs are still felt 70 years after detonation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early Christian writer Tertullian first applied the epithet "bride of Christ" to the uppity virgins of Carthage as a means of enforcing female obedience. Henceforth, the virgin as Christ's spouse was expected to manifest matronly modesty and due submission, hobbling virginity's ancient capacity to destabilize gender roles. In the early Middle Ages, the focus on virginity and the attendant anxiety over its possible loss reinforced the emphasis on claustration in female religious communities, while also profoundly disparaging the nonvirginal members of a given community. With the rising importance of intentionality in determining a person's spiritual profile in the high Middle Ages, the title of bride could be applied and appropriated to laywomen who were nonvirgins as well. Such instances of democratization coincided with the rise of bridal mysticism and a progressive somatization of female spirituality. These factors helped cultivate an increasingly literal and eroticized discourse: women began to undergo mystical enactments of their union with Christ, including ecstatic consummations and vivid phantom pregnancies. Female mystics also became increasingly intimate with their confessors and other clerical confidants, who were sometimes represented as stand-ins for the celestial bridegroom. The dramatic merging of the spiritual and physical in female expressions of religiosity made church authorities fearful, an anxiety that would coalesce around the figure of the witch and her carnal induction into the Sabbath.

Book excerpt: It must have been Otieno's idea of a joke. Too many offended egos back at headquarters, too many influential people unhappy with him in Nairobi. And yet, with his record, he was almost impossible to dismiss. So Otieno had sent Mollel straight to Hell. When we first met Detective Mollel in Hour of the Red God, he was heralded as "a wonderfully complex and tragic protagonist" (Booklist), and Richard Crompton's novel called "spellbinding" (The Christian Science Monitor) and "a fantastic read" (The Plain Dealer [Cleveland]). Now Mollel returns in Hell's Gate, only this time the Maasai warrior-turned-detective has been banished from Nairobi, Kenya's bustling metropolis, to a small, fly-blown town on the edge of a national park. His career, he thinks, has taken a nosedive. His colleagues on the police force are a close-knit group and they have not taken kindly to a stranger in their midst. Mollel suspects they are guilty of the extortion and bribery that plague the force. But when the body of a flower worker turns up in the local lake, he begins to wonder if they might be involved in something even more disturbing. For all is not as it seems in Hell's Gate. Amid rumors of a local death squad, disappearances, and blackmail, Mollel is forced not only to confront his Maasai heritage but also to ask himself where justice truly lies. In upholding the law, is he doing what is right? Crompton captures contemporary Kenya in all its complexity, and Hell's Gate is a captivating novel that you won't be able to put down.
