This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps, and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. Major Redway picks up his analysis of the actions in the Eastern theatre of the Civil War with his widely acclaimed book on the Fredericksburg campaign of 1862. Goaded by his political master Lincoln, Major-General Burnside assumed the offensive with the Union army in late 1862, planning to use speed and surprise to enable him to defeat the Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee. His plan started to fall apart almost immediately as he failed to move with the requisite speed and, faced with choices between vaciliation and bold action, assumed the former. What had started badly was to end disastrously for the Union forces at the Battle of Fredericksburg, as bloody frontal assaults were delivered against entrenched Confederate troops. This book is part of the Special Campaigns series produced around the turn of the 20th century by serving or recently retired British and Indian Army officers. They were intended principally for use by British officers seeking a wider knowledge of military history. Author — Major George William Redway (1859-1934) 224 additional maps have been added.

Book excerpt: The battle at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in December 1862 involved hundreds of thousands of men; produced staggering, unequal casualties (13,000 Federal soldiers compared to 4,500 Confederates); ruined the career of Ambrose E. Burnside; embarrassed Abraham Lincoln; and distinguished Robert E. Lee as one of the greatest military strategists of his era. Francis Augustín O'Reilly draws upon his intimate knowledge of the battlegrounds to discuss the unprecedented nature of Fredericksburg's warfare. Lauded for its vivid description, trenchant analysis, and meticulous research, his award-winning book makes for compulsive reading.

Book excerpt: Contains more than 20 maps, diagrams and illustrations The movement and details of the Union offensive plan at Fredericksburg seemed to be understood by all senior commanders; the North had a preponderance of manpower and artillery; a bridgehead was established on the enemy side of the river and initial objectives secured. Why did Burnside decide to withdraw his army back across the river to its original position? That question cannot be answered without viewing the pontoon crossing sites, the Union approach routes, the infamous "stonewall," and the other Confederate defensive positions. Accordingly, the purpose of a Fredericksburg staff ride is to visit these and other locations on the battlefield and analyze the battle through the eyes of the men who were there, both leaders and rank and file soldiers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed, illustrated account of another Union failure early in the Civil War. In December 1862, things were still confused for the Union. Antietam had been a failure for both sides, and although the battle showed that the Union army could bring the Confederates to bay, it couldn't pin them in one place long enough to destroy them. In December 1862, General Burnside, newly appointed to command the Army of the Potomac, planned to seize and secure the town of Fredericksburg, and then take the Confederate capital of Richmond. Carl Smith's book details the epic struggle that engulfed the Union side as it crossed the Rappahannock on December 11, encountering stiff opposition from Lee's men.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1886 edition. Excerpt: ... Clearings are few and far between; the roads are bad, and the undergrowth of the woods is penetrated with difficulty. The face of the country is undulating, with, gentle gradients, and abrupt or considerable eminences are seldom met with. The water-courses are numerous, and several attain to the dignity of rivers, notably the Rappahannock and the Rapidan, the Matapony and the North and South Annas. Their course is, generally speaking, from west to east, crossing at right angles the line of Federal invasion. The State is in many parts exceedingly fertile, but sparsely cultivated and without manufacturing industry or appliances; and at this period neither food nor forage were plentiful. It is still thinly populated, and between Richmond and the Potomac there is no large town or market. The railroads have already been remarked. The Rappahannock is tidal as far as Frederic.ksburg, and two hundred yards wide in the neighbourhood of the town, increasing in width as it flows seaward.. Below Port Eoyal it becomes a formidable obstacle in the path of an hostile army. There are several easy fords above Falmouth; the river-banks, except near Fredericksburg, are clad with timber, and from Falmouth downwards the left commands the right. Burnside's object and plan. Burnside's objective was, as we have seen, Richmond, sixty miles south of Fredericksburg; but between him and the Confederate capital intervened the broad waters of the Rappahannock and the Army of Northern Virginia. Before the city could be captured, Lee's army must be annihilated; before that army could be dealt with, the Rappahannock must be crossed. He had therefore two distinct ends to accomplish: the first, to convey his force across the river; the second, to bring the Confederates...

Book excerpt: This Civil War history and guide offers a vivid chronicle of this dramatic yet misunderstood battle, plus invaluable information for battlefield visitors. The battle of Fredericksburg is usually remembered as the most lopsided Union defeat of the Civil War. It is sometimes called “Burnside’s folly,” after Union commander Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside who led the Army of the Potomac to ruin along the banks of the Rappahannock River. Confederates, fortified behind a stone wall along a sunken road, poured a hail of lead into them as they charged. One eyewitness summed it up saying, “it is only murder now.” But the battle remains one of the most misunderstood and misremembered engagements of the war. Burnside started with a well-conceived plan and had every reason to expect victory. How did it go so terribly wrong? Authors Chris Mackowski and Kristopher D. White have worked for years along Fredericksburg’s Sunken Road and Stone Wall, and they’ve escorted thousands of visitors across the battlefield. Simply Murder not only recounts Fredericksburg’s tragic story of slaughter, but includes vital information about the battlefield itself and the insights they’ve learned from years of walking the ground.
