Book excerpt: Fred Tomaselli's surreal, hallucinatory and highly detailed paintings are gorgeously reproduced in this companion volume to the artist's retrospective exhibition. Originally from the West Coast and its psychedelic scene in the 70s, Tomaselli is based in Brooklyn. Complex explosions of colour and line, swirling patterns, and collages made of natural objects are signature elements of Tomaselli's work. His large-scale assemblage paintings, often built onto wooden surfaces and later varnished, are rich creations laced with historic and cultural references. They invite close viewing and this beautiful large-format volume allows readers to study in brilliant detail the intricacies of each piece. In addition to full reproductions, there are also illustrations of details magnified to reveal the paintings' texture that is so critical to Tomaselli's technique. An interview with the artist provides enriching background while essays by prominent art historians, curators, and critics offer insight into the context and themes of this fascinating American artist. An excerpt from an unpublished work by bestselling writer David Shields, who is an ardent fan of Fred Tomaselli, rounds off this volume. AUTHOR: Ian Berry is Associate Director and The Susan Rabinowitz Malloy Curator of The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College. Heidi Zuckerman Jacobsen is the Director and Chief Curator of the Aspen Art Museum. ILLUSTRATIONS 250 colour illustrations

Book excerpt: Drawing on (s)cul(p)tural paradigms as diverse as paper-doll books, Mad magazine fold-ins and exploded schematic diagrams, the artists in The Paper Sculpture Book offer a hands-on, self-contained art show. Artworks meant to be cut out by the reader and assembled using very basic materials such as tape and rubber bands have been designed by 29 established and emerging contemporary artists, including The Art Guys, Minerva Cuevas, Seong Chun, Nicole Eisenman, Spencer Finch, Rachel Harrison, Stephen Hendee, Patrick Killoran, Glenn Ligon, Helen Mirra, David Shrigley, Sarah Sze, Chris Ware and Allan Wexler. Fred Tomaselli merges images from a birding book and an outdoor-clothing catalogue to create an ironic yet beautiful aviary. Janine Antoni's Crumple provides precise instructions for recreating a crumpled ball of paper, while Luca Buvoli invites the reader to take a pop-up flying lesson from the mysterious Professor M.a.S. Obviously, these are not your elementary-school paper airplanes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside an art gallery, it is easy to forget that the paintings there are the end products of a process involving not only creative inspiration, but also plenty of physical and logistical details. It is these "cruder," more mundane aspects of a painter's daily routine that motivated Brooklyn artist Joe Fig to embark almost ten years ago on a highly unorthodox, multilayered exploration of the working life of the professional artist. Determined to ground his research in the physical world, Fig began constructing a series of diorama-like miniature reproductions of the studios of modern art's most legendary painters, such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. A desire for firsthand references led Fig to approach contemporary artists for access to their studios. Armed with a camera and a self-made "Artist's Questionnaire," Fig began a journey through the workspaces of some of today's most exciting contemporary artists.

Interviews with 120 international contemporary artists discussing works from The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection that spark their imagination shed new light on art-making, museums, and the creative process. Images of works from The Met collection appear alongside images of the contemporary artists' work, allowing readers to discover a rich web of visual connections that spans cultures and millennia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey to a High-Achieving School: Eliminate Destructive Excuses examines the range of devastating excuses often expressed for failure to attain significant improvement in our schools. Using the methods of systems thinking and leadership practices that are employed in high-performing organizations of all kinds, this book shows concretely and specifically that what is at the root of these excuses can be overcome. The core ideas at work in the volume are based on the authors' well-regarded Academy for Education Leaders, an intensive course of seminars conducted for school superintendents, principals, and other educational leaders for the past several years. This is not a "quick fix" manual offering magic wands or silver bullets. It is a carefully-structured guidebook that can clearly and demonstrably help educational leaders at all levels of accountability begin to build a serious culture of excellence within their schools and school districts. Improvement will take time, but as the processes become familiar, school leaders can uncover and address the complex, but confused assumptions that keep standing in the way of the substantial and measurable improvements that must be made for our society's educational future.

Book excerpt: Music Book is a 64-page facsimile artist's book by Sarah Cain, comprising a series of colorful abstractions painted directly over a collection of vintage sheet music. The original book of music was found in Switzerland and Cain's paintings within collide with and respond to the previous owner's handwritten notes. Music Book is an extension of Cain's works on paper that balance her installation and large-scale painting practice: these works are intimate meditations; intricate and small-scale. Cain has been painting Music Book since 2008 and has carried it through three studios. It is this journal of time that you can open up, start, close, put away, like a diary. Music Book is co-published by X Artists' Books and the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum on the occasion of Cain's exhibition, Sarah Cain--Enter the Center.

Book excerpt: The exhibition Fred Tomaselli: The Early Works or How I Became a Painter will feature one video, seven installations, and twelve mixed media works dating from 1984-1992. Many of these works have not been exhibited since they were originally fabricated and this is the first time the works will be exhibited together. Tomaselli made these works prior to the paintings for which he is best known. Mostly created shortly after moving to Brooklyn, these early works were influenced by Tomaselli's punk rock roots and interest in the California Light and Space art; two movements that were never supposed to be together. One of the unifying themes in this early work is the use of low cost, nondescript commercial objects to generate perceptually modifying experiences in the viewer. The exhibition is accompanied by a book published by the Cal State Fullerton, University, Grand Central Press. The publication will document all the works in the exhibition and include essays by Contemporary Art Museum Houston, director, Bill Arning; CSUF, Begovich Gallery, director, Mike McGee; and freelance curator, writer, and Art in America contributing editor Gregory Volk.

Book excerpt: As the accompanying publication to the largest exhibition of contemporary art ever assembled in the U.S., the Prospect.1 New Orleans catalogue is one of the most sought-after art books of 2008-09. Featuring new illustrated essays on New Orleans and its place in twenty-first century America by Prospect.1 organizer Dan Cameron, art historian Barbara Bloemink, journalist Lolis Eric Elie and curator Claire Tancons, the book also includes a fully illustrated section on each of the 81 participating artists, who include William Kentridge, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Fred Tomaselli, Cai Guo Qiang, Sanford Biggers, Tony Fitzpatrick, Amy Sillman, Malick Sidibe, Clare E. Rojas and Monica Bonvicini, among many others. Locating contemporary art in the cauldron that is New Orleans adds a new dimension to the book and its visuals: It's an incisive statement on art making and humanity today. Dan Cameron, the Director and Curator of Prospect.1 New Orleans, is an international New York-based curator who was inspired to organize an exhibition in New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Cameron has been a frequent visitor to New Orleans since the late 1980s, and he organized the 1995 New Orleans Triennial for the New Orleans Museum of Art. In May 2007 Cameron took on the position of Visual Arts Director at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), one of the leading venues for new art in the South, and a principal venue for Prospect.1 New Orleans.

Book excerpt: "This eye-popping book offers a visual history of the psychedelic sensibility. In pop culture, that sensibility is associated with lava lamps, album covers, and "teashades," but it first manifested itself in the extreme colors and kaleidoscopic compositions of 1960s Op Artists. The psychedelic sensibility didn't die at the end of the 1960s; Psychedelic traces it through the day-glo colors of painters Peter Saul, Alex Grey, and Kenny Scharf, the pill and hemp leaf paintings of Fred Tomaselli, the intensified palettes of Douglas Bourgeois and Sharon Ellis, and mixed-media and new media works by younger artists in the new millennium." "Although the term "psychedelic" was coined to describe hallucinatory experiences produced by drugs used psychotherapeutically, the story these images tell is about the influence of psychedelic culture on the art world - not necessarily the influence of drugs. As contemporary art evolved into a diverse and pluralistic discipline, the psychedelic evolved into a language of color and light. In Psychedelic, more than seventy-five vivid color images chart this development, exploring the art chronologically, from early Op Art through recent work using digital technology. The book, which accompanies an exhibition organized by the San Antonio Museum of Art, includes three essays that set the works in historical and cultural context." --Book Jacket.
