Book excerpt: Following the death of her mother, Franziska turns away from love and follows a grimly determined path to achieve a career as a concert pianist. Her determination takes her from her humble home in a small Czech town to an unconventional life in Prague, and eventually draws to a destructive climax in pre-war Berlin. Franziska is a fascinating exploration of character, an alluring treatment of the power of music and of a woman s obsession. Ernst Weiss' second novel was published in 1914 and was highly regarded by Franz Kafka, with whom Weiss was in regular contact. Pushkin Collection editions feature a spare, elegant series style and superior, durable components. Book excerpt: One of the forgotten nineteenth-century women writers, Mathilde Franziska Anneke (1817-1884) was a political activist, writer, and educator who experienced exciting historical times in both Germany and the United States (Wisconsin). Writing on the eve of the German Revolution of 1848, she founded a short-lived revolutionary newspaper and even rode into battle. Later, in exile in the United States, she used her journalistic and oratory skills in support of the women's suffrage and anti-slavery movements. This book is an excellent supplemental reading for women's studies and history classes as well as German literature in translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do states and societies confront the legacies of war and occupation, and what do truth, guilt, and justice mean in that process? In Ghosts of War, Franziska Exeler examines people's wartime choices and their aftermath in Belarus, a war-ravaged Soviet republic that was under Nazi occupation during the Second World War. After the Red Army reestablished control over Belarus, one question shaped encounters between the returning Soviet authorities and those who had lived under Nazi rule, between soldiers and family members, reevacuees and colleagues, Holocaust survivors and their neighbors: What did you do during the war? Ghosts of War analyzes the prosecution and punishment of Soviet citizens accused of wartime collaboration with the Nazis and shows how individuals sought justice, revenge, or assistance from neighbors and courts. The book uncovers the many absences, silences, and conflicts that were never resolved, as well as the truths that could only be spoken in private, yet it also investigates the extent to which individuals accommodated, contested, and reshaped official Soviet war memory. The result is a gripping examination of how efforts at coming to terms with the past played out within, and at times through, a dictatorship.

Book excerpt: An artist's-book portrayal of contemporary Detroit, an overgrown and deindustrialized city on the perpetual brink of renaissance This publication appraises the contemporary urban landscape of a deindustrialized city in the form of an artist's book. In her photographs and texts, German photographer Franziska Klose (born 1977) represents the city of Detroit as an overlay of social and natural history, depicting a landscape absolutely consumed by industry. What was once celebrated as the "Motor City" is now described by the media using slogans such as "ruin porn" and "future city." Snapshots of vacant land and overgrown lots highlight the structure of contemporary Detroit, which remains a manifestation of social inequality, despite all the conjurations of an imminent economic boom. The story of the "comeback" is set against land speculation and water shutoffs, contrasting with the emergence of a potential post-growth society based on urban agriculture and individual autonomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swiss artist Franziska Rutishauser's exhibition "reeling to real" at Kunstgebäude Schlosshof Bodenburg looks at the current and highly controversial topics of climate change and the Anthropocene era. In the show, she reflects on the problem of the man-made threat to our world, a danger that calls for us all to have a greater awareness of our actions than ever before. The publication presents works by the artist (painting, drawing, lightbox-installations) that sensitize viewers to the issue, namely, that the pervading, global threat to nature concerns every single human being. With her striking photorealistic oil paintings that blur the boundaries between the media of painting and photography, and which are sometimes reminiscent of scientific recordings, the artist addresses the conditions and limitations of sense perception, as well as our search for new insights, in order to gain a new understanding of reality and human existence as aggregate conditions of constant change. Exhibition: 'Bullenstall' Schlosshof Bodenburg, Bad Salzdetfurth, Germany (13.08.2016-18.09.2016).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of intimate letters reveals the remarkable radicalism—personal and political—of Mathilde Franziska Anneke. Anneke first became a well-known feminist and democrat in Prussia, earning notoriety for divorcing her first husband and fighting in the German Revolutions of 1848–1849. After moving to the United States, she became a noted proponent of woman suffrage, working with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. Like many other refugees of the German revolutions, Anneke was deeply involved in the Civil War. Radical Relationships focuses on the years 1859–1865, which encompassed not only the war but also Anneke’s intense romantic friendship with Yankee abolitionist Mary Booth. Over the course of seven years, Anneke supported Mary through her husband’s trial for rape. When Sherman Booth was later imprisoned for his abolitionist activity, Anneke conspired to spring him from jail. The two women then moved with three of their children to Zürich, Switzerland, where they collaborated on antislavery fiction and mixed with leading European radicals such as Ferdinand Lassalle. From Europe, they followed the fate of German-born soldiers in the Union army, including Anneke’s husband, Fritz, and his court martial. Throughout her career, Anneke’s intimate relationships informed her politics and sustained her activism. Her correspondence with Fritz and Mary Booth provides fresh perspectives on the transnational dimensions of the Civil War and gender and sexuality.
