For Parkett No. 69, the featured collaboration artists are Belgian Conceptual artist Francis Alÿs, German sculptor and mixed-media artist Isa Genzken, and the Indian-born, London-based sculptor Anish Kapoor. Authors include Saul Anton, Robert Storr, and Kitty Scott on Als; Pamela Lee and Jörg Heiser on Genzken, and an interview with Genzken by Michael Krajewski; and Norman Bryson, Marina Warner, and Kurt Forster on Kapoor. Other features include Philip Kaiser on Amelie von Wulffen, Stuart Comer on Swetlana Heger, and a special Parkett Inquiry on consensus in contemporary art world entitled, "The Economy of Attention." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicolás Guagnini: Theatre of the Self is a hybrid catalogue-reader based on the exhibition of the multi-threaded performances of Buenos Aires-born New York-based Guagnini. Many of these works, spanning from 2005 until 2019, have never been seen before or have not been seen since their original live presentation. Raised in Argentina during the "Dirty War" and violent military dictatorship, Guagnini moved to New York in the late 1990s and co-founded the film production company Union Gaucha Productions with Karin Schneider in 1997. In 2005 Guagnini became co-founder of Orchard Gallery, an artist cooperative based on the Lower East Side. The work in Theatre of the Self is informed in part by autobiography, history, politics and through Guagnini's community itself. Some performances were participatory, some were not. But all were made polyvocaly in collaboration with a group of artists with shared interests and concerns around performance and the moving image including Ei Arakawa, Leigh Ledare, Jeff Preiss, Aura Rosenberg, Karin Schneider among others. This publication invites internationally acclaimed art historians, curators and artists to think about the material in Guagnini's work within a unique format. Readers of the publication will be interested in contemporary art, film, political science, performance studies, and Latin American studies.

Book excerpt: In December 1993, gaming changed forever. id Software's seminal shooter DOOM was released, and it shook the foundations of the medium. Daniel Pinchbeck brings together the complete story of DOOM for the first time. This book takes a look at the early days of first-person gaming and the video game studio system. It discusses the prototypes and the groundbreaking technology that drove the game forward and offers a detailed analysis of gameplay and level design. Pinchbeck also examines DOOM's contributions to wider gaming culture, such as online multiplay and the modding community, and the first-person gaming genre, focusing on DOOM's status as a foundational title and the development of the genre since 1993. Pinchbeck draws extensively from primary data: from the game itself, from the massive fan culture surrounding the title, and from interviews with the developers who made it. This book is not only the definitive work on DOOM but a snapshot of a period of gaming history, a manifesto for a development ethos, and a celebration of game culture at its best.

Book excerpt: "In 2009, the revered Swiss art publication and editions publisher, Parkett, celebrates its quarter-centenary with a comprehensive retrospective collecting all 200 of the artists editions it has produced since 1984. (They include Tomma Abts, Maurizio Cattelan, John Currin, Peter Fischli/David Weiss, Nan Goldin, Dan Graham, Wade Guyton, Zoe Leonard, Paul McCarthy, Marilyn Minter, Cady Noland, Raymond Pettibon, Richard Prince, Charles Ray, Gerhard Richter, Pipilotti Rist, Ed Ruscha, Dana Schutz, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Christopher Wool, to name just a few.) Originating at the celebrated SANAA-designed 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan, the exhibition builds on previous retrospectives held at Kunsthaus Zurich (2005), the Irish Museum of Modern Art (2002), The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2001), and Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (2001). "Commissioned by Parkett, the most important artists of our time have created editions that represent the essence of their art or reveal an unexpected dimension... the works cover every possible medium including painting, photographs, drawings, prints, sculptures, videos, DVDs, and sound pieces," wrote Whitechapel's Iwona Blazwick in 2001." "Weighing in at more than 450 pages, this super-collectible catalogue raisonni, produced in conjunction with the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, is the most comprehensive catalogue ever produced on Parkett's fabled editions. As such, it is a unique document of today's art." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: During the 1990s a number of artists claimed the exhibition as their medium. Working independently or in various collaborative constellations, they eschewed the individual object in favour of the exhibition environment as a dynamic arena, ever expanding its physical and temporal parameters. Their work engages directly with the vicissitudes of everyday life, offering subtle moments of transformation. This catalogue, which accompanies a major exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, is the first in the USA to examine the dynamic interchange among a core group of these artists - Angela Bulloch, Maurizio Cattelan, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez- Foerster, Douglas Gordon, Carsten Hller, Pierre Huyghe, Jorge Pardo, Philippe Parreno and Rirkrit Tiravanija - a many-sided conversation that helped shape the cultural landcape of the 1990s and beyond. Featuring over thirty texts by scholars and curators, most of whom have shared in the artists' individual and collective histories, the exhibition provides insight and background on the artists and their ongoing social and intellectual exchange.

Book excerpt: The first critical overview of an emerging field, with contributions from both scholars and artist-practitioners. Over the last decade, machinima—the use of computer game engines to create movies—has emerged as a vibrant area in digital culture. Machinima as a filmmaking tool grew from the bottom up, driven by enthusiasts who taught themselves to deploy technologies from computer games to create animated films quickly and cheaply. The Machinima Reader is the first critical overview of this rapidly developing field. The contributors include both academics and artist-practitioners. They explore machinima from multiple perspectives, ranging from technical aspects of machinima, from real-time production to machinima as a performative and cinematic medium, while paying close attention to the legal, cultural, and pedagogical contexts for machinima. The Machinima Reader extends critical debates originating within the machinima community to a wider audience and provides a foundation for scholarly work from a variety of disciplines. This is the first book to chart the emergence of machinima as a game-based cultural production that spans technologies and media, forming new communities of practice on its way to a history, an aesthetic, and a market.
