Book excerpt: This book explores the development of abstraction from the moment of its declaration around 1912 to its establishment as the foundation of avant-garde practice in the mid-1920s. The book brings together many of the most influential works in abstractions early history to draw a cross-media portrait of this watershed moment in which traditional art was reinvented in a wholesale way. Works are presented in groups that serve as case studies, each engaging a key topic in abstractions first years: an artist, a movement, an exhibition or thematic concern. Key focal points include Vasily Kandinskys ambitious Compositions V, VI and VII; a selection of Piet Mondrians work that offers a distilled narrative of his trajectory to Neo-plasticism; and all the extant Suprematist pictures that Kazimir Malevich showed in the landmark 0.10 exhibition in 1915.0Exhibition: MoMA, New York, USA (23.12.2012-15.4.2013).

Book excerpt: Egon Schiele saw himself as a visionary and prophetic artist, Frantisek Kupka forged an abstract style of painting infused with spiritist principles, Joseph Beuys called under the rubric social sculpture for social change due to creative actions, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an ecological crusader whose spiral paintings were holistic in essence. These pioneering artistic attitudes and developments would have not come about without contact with several prophets. Some of these were artist-naturists, others were modern-day Christs, while still others saw themselves as social revolutionaries of a kind. Their relevance for modern art remains a largely untold story. Today, their names Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, Gusto Gräser, Gustav Nagel, as well as Friedrich Muck-Lamberty and Ludwig Christian Haeusser have almost been forgotten.

Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen a renewed interest in the phenomenon of abstract art, particularly regarding its ability to speak to the political, social, and cultural conditions of our times. This collection of essays, which looks at historical examples of artistic practice from the early pioneers of abstraction to late modernism, investigates the ambivalent role that abstraction has played in the visual arts and cultures of the last hundred years. In addition, it explores various theoretical and critical narratives that seek to articulate new perspectives on its legacy in the visual arts. From metaphysical considerations and philosophical reflections to debates on interculturality and global perspectives, the contributors examine and reconsider abstraction in the visual arts from a contemporary point of view that acknowledges the many social, economic, cultural, and political aspects of artistic practice. As such, the volume progressively expands the boundaries of thinking about abstract art by engaging it in its increasingly diverse cultural environment.

Book excerpt: The Jindřich Waldes collection was confiscated and placed in the care of the State Collection of Old Masters in Prague in 1939. Although Waldes' heirs requested restitution of the collection in 1946, their claims were not settled before Feb. 1948 and the Waldes Collection was incorporated into the collections of the National Gallery in Prague. In 1996 the collection was returned to the heirs of Jindřich Waldes. In that same year Jiří Waldes, on behalf of the Waldes family, donated some of the works from the collection to the National Gallery in Prague in memory of his father.

Book excerpt: On Line: Drawing Through the Twentieth Century explores the radical transformation of drawing that began during the last century as numerous artists critically re-examined the traditional concepts of the medium. In a revolutionary departure from the institutional definition of drawing and from reliance on paper as the fundamental support material, artists instead pushed the line into real space, expanding the medium's relationship to gesture and form and connecting it with painting, sculpture, photography, film and dance. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, On Line presents a discursive history of mark-making through nearly 250 works by 100 artists, including Aleksandr Rodchenko, Alexander Calder, Karel Malich, Eva Hesse, Anna Maria Maiolino, Richard Tuttle, Mona Hatoum and Monika Grzymala, among many others. Essays by the curators illuminate individual practices and examine broader themes, such as the exploration of the line by the avant-garde and the relationship between drawing and dance.

Book excerpt: Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), an artist whose work is still far too unknown to a wider public, eschewed representational painting as early as 1906. Between 1906 and 1915 she produced nearly two hundred abstract paintings, some of which are in monumental formats. Like Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Kazimir Malevich, who have previously been regarded as the main protagonists of abstract art, Hilma af Klint was influenced by contemporary spiritual movements, such as spiritism, theosophy, and anthroposophy. Her multifaceted imagery strives to provide insight into the different dimensions of existence, where microcosm and macrocosm reflect one another. Hilma af Klint left more than one thousand paintings, watercolors, and sketches. This publication presents her most important abstract works as well as paintings and works on paper that have never before been seen in public, enhancing our understanding of her oeuvre. Book excerpt: Czechoslovakia's leading twentieth-century painter, Frantisek Kupka (1871-1957) is a pioneer of modernist abstraction. As early as 1911, he was one of the most visible and widely exhibited abstract artists in the world; later, in the early 1930s, he was a founding member of the Abstraction-Création group. This hefty volume--the only monograph on Kupka currently available--offers a massive survey of his paintings, drawings, prints, posters, sculptures, correspondence and other ephemera from the collection of Jindrich Waldes, Kupka's close friend and gallerist. Waldes' collection was confiscated first by the Nazis, who deemed abstraction decadent, and later by the Communists, who declared his work an example of imperialist ideology and cosmopolitan nihilism that is harmful to the people. Also included is a foreword by Jirí Waldes, the collector's son, and Ludmila Vachtová, one of the most knowledgeable experts on the artist.
