Book excerpt: "A remarkably interesting and well-constructed tale." -New York Times "Is decidedly the work of a practiced hand." -Catholic World "Belongs to the Roman group of his novels....It is the story of a young woman, reared in the most conservative and clerical circles, and supposed to be the daughter of Prince Chiaromonte. The sudden death of the latter reveals the fact that Angela is without legal rights, and that, instead of inheriting title and fortune, she is a nameless pauper. She is affianced to an officer who is too much a gentleman to be influenced by this revelation, save to the display of greater tenderness and determination to make her his bride. But his departure upon a military expedition to Africa is soon followed by the report of his death in a skirmish, and there is nothing left for Angela but to take the veil. She has been for some time a nun when it transpires that her lover was not slain, but has been held in captivity for several years. When he makes his escape and returns, a difficult situation is created; for Angela cannot forget her love, yet is irrevocably vowed to the religious life. But it seems that there is a way out of even so desperate a difficulty as this, and a way that approves itself to so good a Catholic as Mr. Crawford....It is certainly a relief to our feelings to learn that the highest ecclesiastical authority is willing to intervene for the purpose of bringing the lovers together." -The Dial "He treats the situation with human frankness, delicacy, and in a spirit of reverence. As a story in point of construction and character-drawing, 'The White Sister' is distinctly the best novel which has come from Mr. Crawford's hand for a number of years past. His intimate knowledge of Roman society, his affection for the Italians, and his long familiarity with many types of the people of the Peninsula, made him specially successful when he dealt with Roman themes, and for these reasons the 'Sara cinesca' series is likely to endure as long as any of the stories that came from his hand. Ippolito Saracinesca, a wise, middle-aged ecclesiastic of the most cultivated and charming type, appears in 'The White Sister,' and reminds the reader of the three generations in whose change of manners and ideals Mr. Crawford has reported the striking transformation of Rome during the last half-century." -The Outlook "It is precisely the antiquity of Marion Crawford's theme which compels one to recognize with pleasant surprise the quickening power of his pen." -Atheneum "There are two reasons for Crawford's continued popularity: he always had a story to tell and he knew how to tell." -Literary Digest

Book excerpt: Large print. Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was an American writer noted for his many novels. He was born at Bagni di Lucca, Italy. In 1879 he went to India, where he studied Sanskrit and edited the Allahabad Indian Herald. Returning to America he continued to study Sanskrit at Harvard University for a year, contributed to various periodicals, and in 1882 produced his first novel, Mr Isaacs. This book had an immediate success, and its author's promise was confirmed by the publication of Doctor Claudius: A True Story (1883). After a brief residence in New York and Boston, in 1883 he returned to Italy, where he made his permanent home. He also published the historical works, Ave Roma Immortalis (1898), Rulers of the South (1900) renamed Sicily, Calabria and Malta in 1904, and Gleanings from Venetian History (1905). The Saracinesca series is perhaps known to be his best work, with the third in the series, Don Orsino, set against the background of a real estate bubble, told with effective concision. A fourth book in the series, Corleone, was the first major treatment of the Mafia in literature.

Book excerpt: Romance Novels, Romantic Novelist explores the interaction between Francis Marion Crawford's life and the forty-four novels, some of them best sellers, that he wrote between 1881 and 1908. Born to American parents in Italy, where he lived for the rest of his life, he told exotic tales that reflected his own adventures on four continents as well as an imagination stimulated by the world of privilege he knew particularly well in Italy and the United States. The novels, all written in English, were popular in America and Great Britain, and many were translated into Italian, French, German, and Russian. Although women played their customary role in all his love stories, his novels considered as a whole chart an evolution in Crawford's empathy with the problems and demands women face until he identified with female protagonists more than with male. The circumstances of his relations with the women in his life very much shape this process. His powerful mother, the sisters and cousins who flocked about him in his youth and depended on him in his maturity, the women who attracted him sexually and intellectually, and the daughters who pleased him as well as the wife who did not all influenced how he created heroines and villainesses. The interception of his world, his work, and his women constitute the core of this book.
