Book Synopsis Recent Social Trends in France, 1960-1990 by : Michel Forsé
Download or read book Recent Social Trends in France, 1960-1990 written by Michel Forsé and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1993-04-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prominent feature of the social revolution in France has been the decline of the great national institutions -- the Republic, the Army, the church, and the schools -- which are losing their symbolic value and are no longer the targets of ideological disputes. As a result, there is a growing basic consensus among the French people. At the same time, the French have developed a new interest in managing local problems -- due to the decentralization law -- which has led to the establishment of many voluntary associations. Changes in family life following the "revolution" of 1968 have led to greater instability among couples, but at the same time have strengthened the kinship system resulting in increased life expectancy. The customs of the French have also changed. The French education system, originally based on authority and regulations, is now making increasing use of experimentation and negotiation. As a result, the attitude of the French towards authority has totally changed and the French have learned to negotiate and cooperate among themselves. All these changes can be interpreted as progressive moves toward liberty, equality, and individualism. There is little danger of social instability, since French society remains in remarkably robust health.
Book Synopsis France and the German Question, 1945–1990 by : Frédéric Bozo
Download or read book France and the German Question, 1945–1990 written by Frédéric Bozo and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the immediate aftermath of World War Two, the victors were unable to agree on Germany’s fate, and the separation of the country—the result of the nascent Cold War—emerged as a de facto, if provisional, settlement. Yet East and West Germany would exist apart for half a century, making the "German question" a central foreign policy issue—and given the war-torn history between the two countries, this was felt no more keenly than in France. Drawing on the most recent historiography and previously untapped archival sources, this volume shows how France’s approach to the German question was, for the duration of the Cold War, both more constructive and consequential than has been previously acknowledged.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of French Theater by : Edward Forman
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of French Theater written by Edward Forman and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "French theater" evokes most immediately the glories of the classical period and the peculiarities of the Theater of the Absurd. It has given us the works of Corneille, Racine, and Moliere. In the Romantic era there was Alexander Dumas and surrealist works of Alfred Jarry, and then the Theater of the Absurd erupted in rationalistic France with Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, and Jean-Paul Sartre. The Historical Dictionary of French Theater relates the history of the French theater through a chronology, introduction, bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries on authors, trends, genres, concepts, and literary and historical developments that played a central role in the evolution of French theater.

But it also focuses on key differences: new types of heritage film, whether postcolonial or heritage pastiche; the newly emerging genre of cinema de banlieue; and the focus on community and political reflection.

Book Synopsis New European Identity and Citizenship by : Remy Leveau
Download or read book New European Identity and Citizenship written by Remy Leveau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. This study, undertaken with the support of the Ford Foundation under the scientific leadership of Khadija Mohsen-Finan, Remy Leveau and Catherine Wihtol de Wenden considers the new forms of citizenship and identity that have emerged within the settlements of immigrant populations in various countries in Europe. Through their claims to citizenship, shifting religious identities and by occupying the high ground both locally and at European level, these communities challenge long standing citizenship models and give full meaning to the concepts of supranational European citizenship. The contributors question whether such European citizenship will include all residents of Europe or whether it will serve to increase the exclusion felt by certain groups of migrants. In particular the contributors examine the implications of three emerging citizenship trends - the impact of the demand for Islam; the emergence of undocumented migrants and their inclusion in an increasingly stratified society; and finally, the rising tide of ordinary or political refugees who are challenging European citizenship on their own terms.
