Download or read book The Infinite Staircase written by Geoffrey A. Moore and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAUTILUS BOOK AWARD GOLD MEDALIST — BODY, MIND, SPIRIT PRACTICES “Combining an extraordinary range of scholarship with an accessible and entertaining writing style, The Infinite Staircase . . . provides a coherent and unified platform for a full human life.” —Midwest Book Review In this bold new book, high-tech’s best-known strategist makes a seminal contribution to the search for meaning in a secular era. Two questions fundamental to human existence have always been the metaphysical “where do I fit in the grand scheme of things?” and the ethical “how should I behave?” Religion is no longer a source of answers for many people, and nothing has replaced it. Moore uses his signature framework-based approach to answer these questions, taking us on an intellectual roller coaster ride through physics, chemistry, biology, the social sciences and the humanities. Along the way, he builds a metaphorical ladder that leads from the big bang to the need for ethical action in our daily lives. Combining an extraordinary range of scholarship with an accessible and entertaining writing style, The Infinite Staircase: What the Universe Tells Us About Life, Ethics, and Mortality provides a coherent and unified platform for a full human life.
Book Synopsis Framing in Discourse by : Deborah Tannen
Download or read book Framing in Discourse written by Deborah Tannen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of framing has been pivotal in research on social interaction among anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, and linguists. This collection shows how the discourse analysis of frames can be applied to a range of social contexts. Tannen provides a seminal theoretical framework for conceptualizing the relationship between frames and schemas as well as a methodology for the discourse analysis of framing in interaction. Each chapter makes a unique theoretical contribution to frames theory while showing how discourse analysis can elucidate the linguistic means by which framing is accomplished in a particular interactional setting. Applied to such a wide range of contexts as a medical examination, psychotic discourse, gender differences in sermon performance, boys' "sportscasting" their own play, teasing among friends, a comparison of Japanese and American discussion groups, and sociolinguistic interviews, the discourse analysis of framing emerges here as a fruitful new avenue for interaction analysis.

Book Synopsis Framing American Politics by : Karen Callaghan
Download or read book Framing American Politics written by Karen Callaghan and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2005-07-10 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most issues in American political life are complex and multifaceted, subject to multiple interpretations and points of view. How issues are framed matters enormously for the way they are understood and debated. For example, is affirmative action a just means toward a diverse society, or is it reverse discrimination? Is the war on terror a defense of freedom and liberty, or is it an attack on privacy and other cherished constitutional rights? Bringing together some of the leading researchers in American politics, Framing American Politics explores the roles that interest groups, political elites, and the media play in framing political issues for the mass public. The contributors address some of the most hotly debated foreign and domestic policies in contemporary American life, focusing on both the origins and process of framing and its effects on citizens. In so doing, these scholars clearly demonstrate how frames can both enhance and hinder political participation and understanding.

Book Synopsis Framing Hijab in the European Mind by : Ghufran Khir-Allah
Download or read book Framing Hijab in the European Mind written by Ghufran Khir-Allah and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compares how British and Spanish media have covered the French ban on hijab wearing in public schools. Using interdisciplinary approaches ranging from social psychology, semiology, cognitive linguistics and sociology, it seeks to explain how the hijab is interpreted as a sign by the mainstream culture, and hijab-wearing Muslim sub-culture. Based on an analysis of 108 articles published in the national newspaper from each context, this comparative study operates on two levels: a micro-level analysis of within-culture variations between mainstream culture and the hijab-wearing women; and a macro-level analysis of the cross-cultural variation between the British context and the Spanish one. The result is a profound insight into how each discourse reveals the different level of social integration of hijab-wearing women in these two different contexts. The Analysis methodology combines between Critical Discourse Analysis CDA, Conceptual Metaphor Theory CMT, and Cognitive Linguistics CL. The book introduces a novel analysis methodology for social and linguistic sciences. It is the Cognitive Critical Discourse Analysis methodology CCDA.

The entry for "dromedary hump," for example, shows a typical x-ray of this condition with a photograph of a dromedary camel that clearly shows how the name fits the sign. Dr. Mulligan says, "In honor of the 100th anniversary of Roentgen's discovery, this book illustrates and elaborates on the history of 100 of the more classic radiologic signs. If we are to use these terms with full understanding, we must have the ability to visualize the object depicted by the term, imagine its radiographic appearance, and transfer that picture to the radiographic image before us. This book is intended to help practitioners and students of our art accomplish that task."
