Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fragments From German Prose Writers Surrounded by the nations which have the chief and foremost influence on the condition and desti nies of mankind, lies our Fatherland strong against all, formidable to most, in six hundred thousand warriors, who have seldom been equalled, and never excelled. For whomsoever, or for whatsoever cause, they take up arms, whoever be their leader, with them rests the balance of political power, the liberties of Europe, the welfare of the human race. By Germans was the last universal monarchy over thrown; from among them proceeded the rulers of the states which arose out of its ruins, in one of whom, chosen by themselves, Europe recognized the title and rank of Caesar; while the abuse of his power was mainly checked by the spirit of German freedom. Book Synopsis Schelling’s Reception in Nineteenth-Century British Literature by : Giles Whiteley
Download or read book Schelling’s Reception in Nineteenth-Century British Literature written by Giles Whiteley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-18 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the various ways in which the German philosopher Friedrich Schelling was read and responded to by British readers and writers during the nineteenth century. Challenging the idea that Schelling’s reception was limited to the Romantics, this book shows the ways in which his thought continued to be engaged with across the whole period. It follows Schelling’s reception both chronologically and conceptually as it developed in a number of different disciplines in British aesthetics, literature, philosophy, science and theology. What emerges is a vibrant new history of the period, showing the important role played by reading and responding to Schelling, either directly or more diffusely, and taking in a vast array of major thinkers during the period. This book, which will be of interest not only to historians of philosophy and the history of ideas, but to all those dealing with Anglo-German reception during the nineteenth century, reveals Schelling to be a kind of uncanny presence underwriting British thought.
Book Synopsis Victorian Women and the Economies of Travel, Translation and Culture, 1830–1870 by : Judith Johnston
Download or read book Victorian Women and the Economies of Travel, Translation and Culture, 1830–1870 written by Judith Johnston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both travel and translation involve a type of journey, one with literal and metaphorical dimensions. Judith Johnston brings together these two richly resonant modes of getting from here to there as she explores their impact on culture with respect to the work of Victorian women. Using the metaphor of the published journey, whether it involves actual travel or translation, Johnston focusses particularly on the relationships of various British women with continental Europe. At the same time, she sheds light on the possibility of appropriation and British imperial enhancement that such contact produces. Johnston's book is in part devoted to case studies of women such as Sarah Austin, Mary Busk, Anna Jameson, Charlotte Guest, Jane Sinnett and Mary Howitt who are representative of women travellers, translators and journalists during a period when women became increasingly robust participants in the publishing industry. Whether they wrote about their own travels or translated the foreign language texts of other writers, Johnston shows, women were establishing themselves as actors in the broad business of culture. In widening our understanding of the ways in which gender and modernity functioned in the early decades of the Victorian age, Johnston's book makes a strong case for a greater appreciation of the contributions nineteenth-century women made to what is termed the knowledge empire.
