Book excerpt: Fracture mechanics has been used for decades nowadays, and methods have been well established in the community especially for standard-sized specimens. As it was mainly developed for large structure assessment against the brittle failure, standardized specimens are of large size at present. However, in many cases, these standard specimens are not possible to apply due to size requirements of the available experimental material or the size of the component considered. These can be cases of residual service life assessment of in-service components, local properties determination (e.g., across weld), anisotropy determination and assessment of mechanical properties of newly developed materials under laboratory conditions (e.g., SPD processed materials, et cetera). Therefore, development of new methods using significantly smaller specimens has to be carried out, and procedures using smaller-sized specimens together with their validity limits and relation to standardly obtained results have to be provided in order to provide solution for wide applications.

Book excerpt: In the nuclear field, the importance of direct fracture toughness measurements on reactor pressure vessel (RPV) materials has been nowadays widely recognized, as opposed to Charpy-based estimations. However, sample dimensions have to be kept small in order to optimize the use of available material (often in the form of previously broken Charpy specimens) or, in the case of new irradiations, make effective use of the limited space available inside irradiation facilities. One of the most appealing geometries for fracture toughness measurements is the miniature Compact Tension specimen, MC(T), which has the following dimensions: B = 4.15 mm, W = 8.3 mm, cross section 10 × 10 mm2. Four MC(T) specimens can be machined out of a broken half Charpy, and in the case of irradiation ten MC(T) samples occupy approximately the same volume as a full-size Charpy specimen. A comprehensive investigation is presented in this paper, aimed at assessing the applicability of MC(T) specimens to measure fracture toughness in fully ductile (upper shelf) conditions. In this study, 18 1TC(T) and 20 MC(T) specimens have been tested at different temperatures from three RPV steels and one low-alloy C-Mn steel. The results obtained clearly show that MC(T) samples exhibit lower fracture toughness properties, both in terms of initiation of ductile tearing (according to various test standards) and resistance to ductile crack propagation (J-R curve). The reduction of tearing resistance might be attributed to work hardening prevailing over loss of constraint in the uncracked ligament for a side-grooved specimen, or to the inadequacy of J-integral to represent ductile crack extension in very small specimens. Both arguments need to be verified with further investigations.

Book excerpt: Broken Charpy specimens from the surveillance program of a Belgian nuclear power plant are used to obtain the fracture toughness in the transition regime using the master curve concept. Two approaches are used. The first one is based on the reconstitution of Charpy specimens that are subsequently precracked and tested in three-point bending. The second approach is an innovative one that makes use of miniature Compact Tension specimens, which are machined from the broken pieces of the original Charpy specimens. Both approaches lead to consistent results. The recently developed miniature Compact Tension design has the advantage to use less material and is less costly in terms of machining operation. For the material investigated in this research, the current regulation, based on a semi-empirical approach to obtain the lower bound fracture toughness, is demonstrated to be conservative as compared to the direct fracture toughness determination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture toughness testing in the elastic-plastic temperature range of material behavior is described in the Master Curve standard ASTM 1921-97. The standard allows measurement of valid fracture toughness values up to KJC= 100 MPa?m with clearly smaller than standard CVN-size specimens for the irradiated material condition. However, a relatively small amount of data measured with miniature specimens of cross-sections 5 mm x 5 mm or 3 mm x 4 mm have been published and hence the utilization of such small specimens is generally not accepted even if the universal specimen size criteria are fulfilled. In this study, the fracture toughness transition temperature T0 has been measured for a high phosphorus content WWER 440 weld coded as W502 both in the non-irradiated and in the irradiated and annealed material conditions. Three-point bend specimens of cross-sections 10 mm x 10 mm, 5 mm x 5 mm and 3 mm x 4mm were used in the study.

Book excerpt: The effect of specimen thickness on fracture toughness JIc has been investigated with compact tension specimens using the multispecimen R-curve method. HT-9 and A533B-1 steel specimens with thicknesses of 25(1TCT), 10(0.4TCT), 3, and 0.5(0.2TCT) mm were tested. Some of them did not satisfy the ASTM E 813 size requirement for valid JIc. The through-thickness distribution of the plastic energy dissipation or work done within the intense strain region at the crack tip was measured by using a recrystallization-etch technique. Fractographic examinations of the variation of stretch zone width and fracture modes along the specimen thickness were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), where flat fracture and shear fracture regions have been distinguished. A new JIc evaluation procedure for invalid specimen size is proposed using rigid plastic analysis and shear fracture measurements with recrystallization-etch or fractographic observations. Predicted JIc values are compared with the JIc values obtained from valid specimen size. This miniaturized specimen technique may be applicable to post-irradiation fracture toughness testing.

Book excerpt: Ferritic steels are currently being considered as fusion first wall candidates because of the relatively low thermal stresses induced during temperature cycles. However, fracture toughness is of concern in this alloy class. Limitations on irradiation space dictate that special techniques by developed for post-irradiation fracture toughness measurements. This study investigates the feasibility of electropotential techniques using single specimens to evalute fracture toughness. The electropotential technique was applied to obtain continuous crack extension measurements on miniaturized specimens and to trace out J versus .delta.a curves. The J-integral results obtained from A286 small specimens compare favorably with those obtained from large specimens. Also, the experimental work shows that electropotential and multiple specimen methods produce consistent data in HT-9 in the transition region where crack extension occurs by mixed cleavage and dimpled rupture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compares various test methods and estimation procedures that are available for determining the fracture toughness of steels. The ASTM Test for Plane-Strain Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 399), the energy rate test, and the multiple identical specimen crack growth resistance R curve test for elastic-plastic fracture toughness JIc determination are compared. Various formulations for plane-strain fracture toughness KIc and JIc estimation are also compared. Comparison of the test methods indicates that, for ductile steels, the multiple identical specimen R curve test is the most promising. It is suggested that the total areas be used for calculation of J from Rice's approximate formulation for three-point bend specimens of ductile steels and crack-contributed areas for brittle steel three-point bend specimens.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge of dynamic mechanical properties is useful in all cases where the strain rate sensitivity of metallic materials is an issue, and whenever the actual loading conditions for a structure (either in normal operation or under accidental circumstances) are different from static. Furthermore, in some investigations, increasing the loading rate in a mechanical test is used to simulate other embrittling mechanisms such as thermal aging or neutron exposure. Precracked Charpy-type (PCVN) specimens, tested under impact loading rates using an instrumented pendulum, have been used for more than 30 years to measure dynamic fracture toughness; the experimental procedure and the analysis methodology are fairly well established, despite the lack of an ASTM or ISO official test standard. This paper addresses the applicability of fatigue precracked miniature Charpy specimens of KLST type (PKLST-B = 3 mm, W = 4 mm and L = 27 mm) for impact toughness measurements in the ductile-to-brittle transition regime and in fully ductile (upper shelf) conditions. In the transition region, tests have been analyzed using the Master Curve approach; the multiple-specimen (low-blow) method has been applied in the upper shelf regime. A well-known and fully characterized reactor pressure vessel steel of the A533B Cl.1 type (JRQ) has been used; the results obtained have been compared with data previously obtained from standard-size precracked Charpy specimens. It has been found that under impact loading conditions PKLST specimens suffer significant loss of constraint when compared to conventional precracked Charpy V-notch samples, in both transition and upper shelf conditions.

Book excerpt: A study of the variation of fracture toughness of American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) 1045 (Unified Numbering System [UNS] G10450) steel in the annealed condition, which exhibits elastic-plastic behavior at the crack tip, with loading rates ranging from quasi-static to dynamic conditions was undertaken. A wedge loaded compact tension (WLCT) specimen geometry was used in both testing conditions. The onset of crack propagation was detected using a strain gage mounted near the crack tip. The fracture parameter JIc decreases by about 50% when the loading rate ?KI increases from 0.5 to about 106 MPa . m1⁄2 s-1. The measured values of JIc using WLCT specimens were confirmed from previous data on this material using standardized three-point bending specimens as well as from evaluation of JIc from stretch zone width measurements using scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surface of the WLCT specimens.

These data may be needed for pressurized thermal shock (PTS) analyses, low upper shelf energy analyses, and to verify shifts in the KIR curve. A major impediment to the development of plant-specific fracture toughness data is the specimen size requirement and the fact that many surveillance capsule programs do not include fracture toughness specimens.
