Book excerpt: The yield strength range for steels from 180 to 210 ksi is currently covered by four weldable alloys of the following nominal chemical analysis: 18%Ni-8%Co-3%Mo maraging steel, 12%Ni-5%Cr-3%Mo maraging steel, 9%Ni-4%Co-0.20%C quenched and tempered (Q and T) steel, and 10%Ni-8%Co-2%Cr-1%Mo-0.10%C Q and T steel. Broad ranges of fracture resistance have been reported for these materials based on various fracture tests, and this report presents information for material selection and design guidance by providing an analysis of the interactions between the metallurgical and mechanical parameters that contribute to the fracture resistance of plate products. Definitions of the interaction between the metallurgical and the mechanical aspects are developed with the use of the Dynamic Tear (DT) test and the Ratio Analysis Diagram (RAD). (Author).

Book excerpt: As the shift from the Metal Age progresses, materials engineers and materials scientists seek new analytical and design methods to create stronger and more reliable materials. Based on extensive research and developmental work done at the author’s multi-disciplinary material laboratory, this graduate-level and professional reference addresses the relationship between fracture mechanisms (macroscale) and the microscopic, with the goal of explaining macroscopic fracture behavior based on a microscopic fracture mechanism. A careful fusion of mechanics and materials science, this text and monograph systematically considers an array of materials, from metals through ceramics and polymers, and demonstrates lab-tested strategies to develop desirable high-temperature materials for technological applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, significant developments have been made to increase the mechanical strength of steels in order to reduce the overall weight of structures, particularly in motor vehicles. Depending on the application, the increase in strength should not be at the expense of forming and in-use properties. The development of ultra-high strength steels requires a search for new trade-offs between these properties in order to optimize the final microstructure. New Advanced High Strength Steels analyzes the interactions between tensile mechanical properties and properties such as work hardening, anisotropy, resistance to rupture, fatigue life, corrosion resistance, crashworthiness, edge retention, hydrogen resistance and weldability. It also examines the links between the microstructural parameters of high-strength steels and the properties mentioned above. It highlights the metallurgical developments that have been necessary for the emergence of these new generations of steels. The book concludes with a look ahead to future developments in ultra-high strength steels

Book excerpt: This report deals with the relationship of elements of microstructure to the fracture characteristics of a group of commercially produced steels, heat-treated to ultra-high strength levels. The microstructures were characterized in terms of optical microscopy, electron diffraction, and electron fractography. Fractographic studies were made of fractured surfaces broken in impact at +25 and -196 C as a function of tempering temperature, in slow bending at ambient temperature, in a modified bend test in which slow and fast propagation stages were effected, and on surfaces produced in tensile fractures. The fracture characteristics were studied by means of an instrumented bend test and in terms of the plastic instability generated in the torsion test. The instrumented bend test yielded data on criteria for the onset of slow crack propagation and for the onset of rapid propagation, including the effect of the total stored energy in the system. Plastic instability in torsion was studied as a function of specimen section size in AISI 4340 steel. A 250,000 psi yield strength Maraging steel was studied in a standard size test bar. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation was made to determine the effects of variations in alloy content, coldworking temperature, and amount of cold work, on the tensile and toughness properties of metastable austenitic stainless steels. The purpose of this program was to arrive at an alloy composition and processing procedure that results in an optimum combination of strength and toughness in a structural sheet material that can be used in the fabrication of highly stressed structures, such as rocket motor casings. It was found that the optimum combination of high yield strength and fracture toughness is obtained by cold working alloys containing about 0.04% to0.05% carbon. The effect of post-deformation heat treatments on the properties of the cold-worked stainless steels was found to be a function of the amount of deformation. In standard Type 301 stainless steel cold reduced 40% to 50%, precipitation of fine carbides in transformed (martensitic) areas was evident after exposure to 800 F for 24 hr. (Author).

Book excerpt: The report includes fracture toughness studies on some new titanium alloys as well as results of an initial feasibility study aimed at raising the optimum strength and toughness limits for titanium alloys through an approach involving thick section composites. The results of salt water stress-corrosion- cracking studies on a number of titanium alloys are described including a study concerning the effect of vacuum heat treatment on stress-corrosion-cracking resistance of titanium alloys. Fatigue crack propagation studies in air and in salt water on the pressure vessel steels A302B, A201B, and A517F are discussed; and the results compared to the actual service performance of these same materials in PVRC program studies. Preliminary fracture toughness correlation diagrams are presented for high strength steels based upon fracture mechanics and engineering test methods. The latest versions of the Fracture Toughness Index Diagrams for steels, titanium alloys and aluminum alloys, a usual feature of this report series and which are based upon engineering test methods, are presented and the significance of the features briefly discussed. Fracture toughness studies on thick plates of 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V, and a 'new' 9Ni-4Co steel are reported. In addition, the results are presented for similar studies on welds of 2Mn-2Ni in 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steels and welds of 9Ni-4Co, 12Ni-3Cr-3Mo and 17Ni- 2Co-3Mo compositions.
