Book excerpt: You are buying this textbook directly from its author, Charlie Dang. Compassionated with the fact that college students are tormented after they fail a series of written tests or university graduation writing proficiency exams, and that a graduate student at San Diego State University kills one professor and wounds three others of his thesis committee with a gun (in 1994) after he fails to defend his Master's Degree thesis the third time, Charlie Dang flees the ruins of his own mind after his daring and fateful trip across the Pacific Ocean on a little fishing boat from his homeland - Vietnam - to give birth to this brainchild, with a desire to help his student peers pass such written tests or university graduation writing proficiency exams with ease and be able to write correctly, creatively, effectively, accurately and consistently regardless of the subjects. Composed with 538 pages of comprehensive English grammar, the book is structured to progress from the most basic step to the most advanced level of comprehension, including practice exercises, essay-writing techniques and tactics, effective writing skills, and sample tests that are almost identical to those being administered on campuses. The English-Vietnamese version of this book will also be soon available on this web site.

This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study had a research purpose and a pedagogical purpose. Research disclosed the dynamic, changing nature of (learner-internal and learner-external) variables that influence strategic competence for developing EFL/ESL writers. This competence was found necessary for international graduate students to move from writer-centered learning to reader-centered communication. The research instruments proved to be practical tools for guiding learners' processes of learning and writing a scholarly paper or article and avoiding plagiarism. The implication for teachers and program administrators is a systematic approach for developing self-regulation (control) in EFL/ESL writing. The first part of the book reports on the mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) research. The second part gives an in-depth report of the 6 cases used in the research. The third part presents tools for systematically developing self-regulation in scholarly (and academic) writing with (a) student and teacher checklists for formative assessment that are valid and reliable; and (b) a model syllabus for teachers that can be adapted across disciplines and genres. These tools deal with learning strategies and their applications to writing and writing instruction.

This book was released on 2023-12-02 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the transfer of rhetorical knowledge from a first language (L1) to a second language (L1-to-L2 rhetorical transfer), a common cognitive phenomenon in the L2 writing of students in foreign language learning environments. It investigates L1-to-L2 rhetorical transfer from a cognitive perspective and examines a specific component of L2 writers’ agency in this transfer, namely metacognition. The book’s ultimate goal is to enhance our understanding of the cognitive mechanism of rhetorical transfer across languages. This goal is in turn connected to the need to determine how L1 rhetorical knowledge can be steered and oriented toward successful L2 writing. To this end, this book proposes a theoretical framework for transfer studies, encompassing the dimensions of text, transfer agency, and L2 essay raters. It facilitates an in-depth exploration of the intricacies involved in L1-to-L2 rhetorical transfer. It then presents empirical studies on this transfer. Embracing a dynamic perspective, this book furthers our understanding of interlingual rhetorical transfer as a conscious or intuitive process for making meaning, one that can be monitored and steered. Moreover, it discusses the pedagogical implications for L2 writing instruction that guides students to use metacognition to transfer L1 rhetorical knowledge during L2 writing.

Book excerpt: English L2 Reading, Third Edition offers teachers research-based insights into bottom-up skills in reading English as a second language and a solid foundation on which to build reading instruction. Core linguistic and psycholinguistic concepts are presented within the context of their application to teaching. The goal is to balance or supplement (not replace) top-down approaches and methodologies with effective low-level options for teaching English reading. The text’s pedagogical features— Questions, Study Guide Questions. Discussion Questions, Spotlight on Teaching sections— engage readers of the text in moving easily from linguistic details and psycholinguistic data and theory to practical explanations and suggestions for teaching. Two Appendices provide tables that list the graphemes or the phonemes of English. Changes in the Third Edition Shift in focus from criticism of whole language methodologies to a more neutral stance —times have changed and the study of lower-level reading strategies is now mainstream Greater focus on linguistic form, along with function and meaning Updated information about reading strategies at each level of the reading process More Spotlight on Teaching sections, one for each chapter New chapter on spelling development
