Book Synopsis Amazing But True Bird Tales by : Mara Bovsun
Download or read book Amazing But True Bird Tales written by Mara Bovsun and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With estimates by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that over 60 million Americans are birdwatchers-it's the fastest growing outdoor hobby-books on birds have a ready audience. Allan Zullo's newest book, Amazing but True Bird Tales, documents nearly 200 outrageous shenanigans and surprising feats performed by our feathered friends. For example, the mockingbird who snuck into a conservatory evading the staff for two weeks while he dined on over $1,000 worth of rare butterflies. Or the very social chicken who received a lifetime achievement award from the ASPCA for her work with senior citizens and traumatized children. And the humorous account of the fractious parrot who constantly mimicked the sound of a circular saw. Drawn from factual accounts from the Audubon Society, news accounts from the United States and the United Kingdom, and numerous Web sites, each story further convinces us that these birds aren't birdbrains at all. Zullo's true tales will be irresistible to any birder whether it's the up-before-dawn-binoculars-in-hand fanatic to the person who occasionally throws out their morning toast to enjoy watching the birds gobble it up.

So, when Flo learns that the victim, a wealthy local chicken farmer, had been trying to reach her when he was killed, she’s more than a little curious why. Will their investigation shine a light on a killer’s fowl deeds before he flies the coop? Or will Flo chicken out when the villain threatens to go all cock-a-doodle-do on her bad self? There’s only one way to find out. And you already know what it is… Yep, Flo and Co. are goin’ in, tail feathers high!

Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER THAT SHOWED US WHAT WAS REALLY IN OUR FOOD In 2004 Felicity Lawrence published her ground-breaking book, Not on the Label, where, in a series of undercover investigations she provided a shocking account of what really goes into the food we eat. She discovered why beef waste ends up in chicken, why a single lettuce might be sprayed six times with chemicals before it ends up in our salad, why bread is full of water. And she showed how obesity, the appalling conditions of migrant workers, ravaged fields in Europe and the supermarket on our high street are all intimately connected. And, when the horsemeat scandal hit the headlines in 2013, she uncovered how the great British public ended up eating horses. Her discoveries would change the way we thought about the UK food industry for ever. ***** 'A brave examination of the calamities caused by a policy laughingly called one of 'cheap food'' Jeremy Paxman, Observer 'Book of the Year' 'Challenges each and every one of us to think again about what we buy and eat. It's almost like uncovering a secret state within the state' Andrew Marr, BBC Radio 4's Start The Week 'A thorough, complex and shocking insight into the food we eat in the twenty-first century . . . Perhaps this should be sold as the most effective diet book ever written' Daily Mail
Book Synopsis Humor in Contemporary Junior Literature by : Julie Cross
Download or read book Humor in Contemporary Junior Literature written by Julie Cross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new book, Julie Cross examines the intricacies of textual humor in contemporary junior literature, using the tools of literary criticism and humor theory. Cross investigates the dialectical paradoxes of humor and debunks the common belief in oppositional binaries of ‘simple’ versus ‘complex’ humor. The varied combinations of so-called high and low forms of humor within junior texts for young readers, who are at such a crucial stage of their reading and social development, provide a valuable commentary upon the culture and values of contemporary western society, making the book of considerable interest to scholars of both children’s literature and childhood studies. Cross explores the ways in which the changing content, forms and functions of the many varied combinations of humor in junior texts, including the Lemony Snickett series, reveal societal attitudes towards young children and childhood. The new compounds of seemingly paradoxical high and low forms of humor, in texts for developing readers from the 1960s onwards, reflect and contribute to contemporary society’s hesitant and uneven acceptance of the emergent paradigm of children’s rights, abilities, participation and empowerment. Cross identifies four types of potentially subversive/transgressive humor which have emerged since the 1960s which, coupled with the three main theories of humor – relief, superiority and incongruity theories – enables a long-overdue charting of developments in humor within junior texts. Cross also argues that the gradual increase in the compounding of the simple and the complex provide opportunities for young readers to play with ambiguous, complicated ideas, helping them embrace the complexities and contradictions of contemporary life.
