Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate look at the career of Baltimore Colts’ running back Tom Matte and his celebrated stint as an emergency quarterback. In 1965, Colts’ running back Tom Matte became the first emergency quarterback in NFL history when both the legendary Johnny Unitas and his backup were hurt in consecutive weeks late in the season. Wearing a wristband to remember the plays, Matte ultimately played three consecutive games at quarterback for the Colts: the first a must-win game against the Los Angeles Rams, followed by a controversial playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, and finally a victory over the Dallas Cowboys in what was formerly known as the Runner-up Bowl. In Last Man Standing: How Tom Matte's Memorable 1965 Season Highlighted a Remarkable NFL Career, Joel Poiley provides a vivid account of this legendary period in Matte’s life as well as the lasting impact of his football career on the NFL and the Colts organization through exclusive interviews with Matte himself, his teammates, opponents, family, and friends. A first-round draft pick out of Ohio State in 1961, Matte played twelve years for the Colts. He played in some of the most controversial and memorable NFL games of that era, and still holds the Super Bowl record for highest per-carry rushing average. Matte’s legacy in Baltimore extended far beyond the playing field though, with his affable, exuberant personality and contributions to the Ravens making him as popular among Baltimore fans as his more celebrated teammates. A fun throwback filled with insights into the workings and history of the NFL, this is a must-read for all football fans.

Four future NFL receivers, Roger Carr, Mike Barber, Pat Tilley, and Billy Ryckman were all on Louisiana Tech’s 1973 national championship team. The Independence Bowl was created as a postseason game for the Southland Conference champion. Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin kicked three extra points to become the first female to kick an extra point in a NCAA Division I football game in the Gamecocks’ 72-10 win over Cumberland in 2001. Future Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III of Baylor made his first-ever collegiate start as a freshman against Northwestern State in 2008. Future Walter Payton Award winner, quarterback Jeremy Moses of Stephen F. Austin, set a single-game NCAA record by completing 57 of 85 passes for 501 yards in a game against Sam Houston State in 2008. Future NFL defensive backs from Nicholls State, Lardarius Webb and Kareem Moore each returned two interceptions for touchdowns against Northwestern State in 2007. Although Southeastern Louisiana didn’t compete in football in the Southland until 2005, the Lions played a “designated” conference game against Louisiana Tech in 1971. Super Bowl quarterback Stan Humphries of the San Diego Chargers played at Northeast Louisiana. Louisiana Tech, which joined the Southland in 1971, didn’t allow a conference opponent to score a single point in the third quarter until the 1975 season. Diontae Spencer of McNeese State returned two kickoffs and one punt return for a touchdown to tie a FCS single-game record.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It was a season where the impossible became possible. It was a season where the hard to believe became believable.” --Marv Levy, Pro Football Hall of Fame Coach. The 1973 Buffalo Bills made pro football history. They had an offense that broke several important rushing records during that memorable year. And they had a superstar running back by the name of O.J. Simpson, who broke a glass ceiling of sorts by becoming the first man -- and indeed the only man -- to ever rush for more than 2,000 yards in one 14-game regular season. That glory-filled accomplishment provided the celebrated culmination to this epic tale of a week-by-week journey from an initial goal to its triumphant ending. In The 2,003-Yard Odyssey: The Juice, The Electric Company, and an Epic Run for a Record, several members of that Buffalo Bills team recall their memories of that year. They discuss how that 1973 season began with a bunch of question marks, then how a boast by one of their offensive linemen led to a challenge for the whole squad to address. A major focus in this book are the feats of the incomparable O.J. Simpson, who earned pro football fame and glory with his record-breaking 1973 performance. This story recounts how Simpson set a mark that was thought of by most people to be impossible to achieve. It was an odyssey unlike any other in NFL annals, and it is explored in concentrated depth and detail within these pages. Joe Zagorski is a member of the Pro Football Writers of America and the Pro Football Researchers Association. He has written several previous books about various teams and players of the NFL. He is also a contributing writer to the website Pro Football Journal and the administrator of the Facebook page, The NFL in the 1970s. He resides in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Marv Levy, who wrote the foreword for this book, is a coaching legend in both the United States and in Canada. He led the Buffalo Bills to four straight Super Bowl appearances from 1990 to 1993. He is also an honored member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oklahoma Football Encyclopedia is an historical description of every University of Oklahoma football game from the beginning in 1895 through today. Learn how the team got its start and how Coach Bennie Owen laid the foundation for the Sooners to become one of the most respected teams on the college football scene. Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer, and Bob Stoops later directed the Sooners to college football’s elite prize. Wilkinson was a great teacher of the Split-T formation, which guided the Sooners to three national championships, 72 consecutive conference games without a loss, and a major college winning streak. Switzer, a master recruiter, implemented the Wishbone formation, which brought another three national titles and 12 conference crowns to Norman. After the Sooner football program had dropped to mediocrity status, Stoops turned the program around and won the national championship in his second year at the helm. This book, now in its second edition, provides insight into Sooner Magic. Many OU football teams appeared to have a supernatural force carry them to victory when victory was not assured. Was it sleight of hand? Smoke and mirrors? No, just pure talent and inspiration helped push the Sooners to the overwhelming tradition the teams have displayed on the gridiron.
