Book excerpt: This volume, titled Proceedings of the International Materials Symposium on Ce ramic Microstructures: Control at the Atomic Level summarizes the progress that has been achieved during the past decade in understanding and controlling microstructures in ceram ics. A particular emphasis of the symposium, and therefore of this volume, is advances in the characterization, understanding, and control of micro structures at the atomic or near-atomic level. This symposium is the fourth in a series of meetings, held every ten years, devoted to ceramic microstructures. The inaugural meeting took place in 1966, and focussed on the analysis, significance, and production of microstructure; the symposium emphasized the need for, and importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of ceramics. A consensus emerged at that meeting on the critical importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of ceramic properties. That point of view became widely accepted in the ensuing decade. The second meeting took place in 1976 at a time of world-wide energy shortages and thus emphasized energy-related applications of ceramics, and more specifically, microstructure-property relationships of those materials. The third meeting, held in 1986, was devoted to the role that interfaces played both during processing, and in influencing the ultimate properties of single and polyphase ceramics, and ceramic-metal systems.

Book excerpt: Seal rings with different matrix compositions (SiC + 4wt%C+4wt%B-matrix A, SiC+4wt%C+0.6wt%B- matrix B and SiC+7wt%C=0.6wt%B- matrix C) and different amounts of boron carbide (5-40wt%) were pressed, sintered to high final density (>98% T.D.) and surface machined by the standard industrial procedure. Tribological test were conducted using the modified pin-on-disc method in which a $SiC-B_4C-C$ seal ring at prssures in the range 16-25 MPa and at a speed varying between 35-75 m/s. In all experiments water was used as lubricant . Collected results showed that the addition of larger amounts of free baron inhibited sintering into the $SiCB_4C-C$ system. In contrast, the addition of (as much as) 7 wt% of free carbon has no signification inflience on the final density of the composite. The introduction of 5-20 wt% of $B_4C$ to the SiC matrix results in a linear decrease of wear rate, proportion to the $B_4C$ content. However, further addition of $B_4C$ to the CiC matrix (20-40 wt%) leads to a slightly parabolic wear rate response, - consequently, the introduction of 40 wt% of $B_4C$improves the wear resistance of the composite by 55%.
