Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Biology Using Electrons and X-Rays discusses the diffraction and image-based methods used for the determination of complex biological macromolecules. The book focuses on the Fourier transform theory, which is a mathematical function that is computed to transform signals between time and frequency domain. Composed of five parts, the book examines the development of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), which allows the calculation of the images of a certain protein. Parts 1 to 4 provide the basic information and the applications of Fourier transforms, as well as the different methods used for image processing using X-ray crystallography and the analysis of electron micrographs. Part 5 focuses entirely on the mathematical aspect of Fourier transforms. In addition, the book examines detailed structural analyses of a specimen's symmetry (i.e., crystals, helices, polyhedral viruses and asymmetrical particles). This book is intended for the biologist or biochemist who is interested in different methods and techniques for calculating the images of proteins using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It is also suitable for readers without a background in physical chemistry or mathematics. - Emphasis on common principles underlying all diffraction-based methods - Thorough grounding in theory requires understanding of only simple algebra - Visual representations and explanations of challenging content - Mathematical detail offered in short-course form to parallel the text

Book Synopsis The Proteins Composition, Structure, and Function V2 by : Hans Neurath
Download or read book The Proteins Composition, Structure, and Function V2 written by Hans Neurath and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proteins: Composition, Structure, and Function, Second Edition, Volume II deals with fundamental properties of proteins, both in solution and in the solid state. This volume consists of five chapters that specifically cover the advances in understanding the structure and function of the protein molecule. The opening chapter presents interpretative procedures of experimental methods for determining protein conformation using X-ray crystallography, followed by an examination of the acid-base dissociations of proteins. The discussion then shifts to the investigation of interactions between protein molecules and other macromolecules, which is of significant importance in providing a chemical basis for many biological processes. A chapter considers first the synthesis, purification, and chemical properties of the polyamino acids. This chapter further describes their physicochemical properties in the solid state, in solution, and at interfaces, and lastly discusses their biological properties as high molecular weight substrates for proteolytic enzymes and as synthetic antigens, and their interaction with proteins and nucleic acids, with viruses, bacteria, blood components, and other biological systems. The use of polyamino acids in the study of the genetic code and the preparation and properties of polypeptidyl proteins are also covered. The concluding chapter focuses on X-ray analysis of protein structure. Organic chemists, biochemists, and researchers in protein-related fields will find this book invaluable
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Picoscience by : Klaus D. Sattler
Download or read book Fundamentals of Picoscience written by Klaus D. Sattler and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now ubiquitous in public discussions about cutting-edge science and technology, nanoscience has generated many advances and inventions, from the development of new quantum mechanical methods to far-reaching applications in electronics and medical diagnostics. Ushering in the next technological era, Fundamentals of Picoscience focuses on the instrumentation and experiments emerging at the picometer scale. One picometer is the length of a trillionth of a meter. Compared to a human cell of typically ten microns, this is roughly ten million times smaller. In this state-of-the-art book, international scientists and researchers at the forefront of the field present the materials and methods used at the picoscale. They address the key challenges in developing new instrumentation and techniques to visualize and measure structures at this sub-nanometer level. With numerous figures, the book will help you: Understand how picoscience is an extension of nanoscience Determine which experimental technique to use in your research Connect basic studies to the development of next-generation picoelectronic devices The book covers various approaches for detecting, characterizing, and imaging at the picoscale. It then presents picoscale methods ranging from scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to spectroscopic approaches at sub-nanometer spatial and energy resolutions. It also covers novel picoscale structures and picometer positioning systems. The book concludes with picoscale device applications, including single molecule electronics and optical computers. Introductions in each chapter explain basic concepts, define technical terms, and give context to the main material.

Book Synopsis Structure Determination by X-ray Crystallography by : Mark F.C. Ladd
Download or read book Structure Determination by X-ray Crystallography written by Mark F.C. Ladd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-09-30 with total page 874 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was highly flattered when I was asked by Mark Ladd and Rex Palmer if I would write the Foreword to this Fourth Edition of their book. "Ladd & Palmer" is such a well-known and classic book on the subject of crystal structure determination, one of the standards in the field: I did feel daunted by the prospect, and wondered if I could do justice to it. The determination of crystal structures by X-ray crystallography has come a long way since the 1912 discoveries of von Laue and the Braggs. In the intervening years great advances have been made, so that today it is almost taken for granted that crystal structures can be determined in which hundreds, if not thousands, of sepa rate atomic positions can be found with apparent ease. In the early years the struc tures of relatively simple materials, such as the alkali halides, were often argued over and even disputed, whereas today we routinely see published structures of most complex molecular crystals, including the structures of viruses and proteins.

Book Synopsis International Tables for Crystallography, Volume B by : International Union of Crystallography
Download or read book International Tables for Crystallography, Volume B written by International Union of Crystallography and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993-06-30 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Tables for Crystallography are no longer available for purchase from Springer. For further information please contact Wiley Inc. The general purpose of Volume B of the International Tables for Crystallography is to present the user/reader with competent and useful accounts of the numerous aspects of reciprocal space in crystallographic research. After an introductory chapter, Part 1 presents the reader with an account of structure factor formalisms, an extensive treatment of the theory, algorithms and crystallographic applications of Fourier methods and a treatment of symmetry in reciprocal space. In Part 2 of the volume these general accounts are followed by detailed expositions of crystallographic statistics, direct methods, Patterson techniques, isomorphous replacement and anomalous scattering, and treatments of the role of electron microscopy and diffraction in crystal structure determination. Part 3 deals with applications of reciprocal space to molecular geometry and `best' plane calculations; it contains a treatment of the principles of molecular graphics and modelling and their applications, and concludes with the presentation of a convergence-acceleration method, of importance in the computation of approximate crystal potentials. The fourth Part contains treatments of various diffuse scattering phenomena arising from crystal dynamics, disorder and low dimensionality (liquid crystals), and an exposition of the underlying theories and/or experimental evidence. The volume concludes with an introductory treatment of the theory of interaction of radiation with matter, the so-called dynamical theory. Insofar as it was possible, effects due to all three major diffraction techniques (X-rays, neutrons and electrons) are considered. The volume is a vital addition to the library of scientists engaged in crystal structure determination, crystallographic computing, crystal physics and other fields of crystallogaphic research. Graduate students specializing in crystallography will find much material suitable for self study and a rich source of references to the relevant literature.
