Book Synopsis Noun Combination in Interlanguage by : Christiane Bongartz
Download or read book Noun Combination in Interlanguage written by Christiane Bongartz and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the effects of first language typology on the interlanguage of learners of English as a second language. Adapting William Rutherford's (1983) view of interlanguage as the typological intersection between the first language and the second language, the study demonstrates how first language effects subtly shape learner choices even at near native proficiency. Grounded in the tradition of transfer research and in the research program in generative grammar, the evidence presented shows the distribution of noun+noun compounds such as the love song and phrasal noun combinations such as the song about love in interlanguage data. These two patterns, it is argued, are systematically related by determiner properties and the process of noun incorporation. Obtained from a multi-task cross-sectional experiment, the data illustrates that learners with Czech as their first language use phrasal constructs (the song about love) significantly more often in production than learners with Mandarin Chinese as their first language, whose preferred choice are noun+noun compounds (the love song). The differences between the learner groups reflect the use of overt case marking in the first language Czech and the absence of overt case marking in the first language Mandarin Chinese.

Book excerpt: In this trenchant work, Susan Bennett examines the authority of the past in modern cultural experience and the parameters for the reproduction of the plays. She addresses these issues from both the viewpoints of literary theory and theatre studies, shifting Shakespeare out of straightforward performance studies in order to address questions about his plays and to consider them in the context of current theoretical debates on historiography, post-colonialism and canonicity.

Book Synopsis Mapping Intersections by : African Literature Association. Meeting
Download or read book Mapping Intersections written by African Literature Association. Meeting and published by Africa World Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes on the challenge: What roles can and should African literature play in Africa's development? From a variety of critical stances and perspectives, the concepts of "literature" and of "development" are theorized, to include and extend beyond inherited concepts and boundaries in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, and thus, to engage peoples' everyday life experiences. Approaches to the question of Africa's literature and its development range from African feminism or feminist practices, to the economics and politics of public access to knowledge, information and literature, to communication networks and use of African languages in national education policies. Twenty essays constitute the volume's four parts which focus on: -- Diverse conceptualizations of African literature and development -- Critical studies of specific writers' works, linking their artistic development with issues and events of social or political development -- A philosophical consideration of the development's relationship to literature -- Models of activist pedagogy in African literature The structure of this volume is encompassed by two roundtable transcriptions with writers and critics for whom African literature and Africa's development is part of a larger struggle to create new space in which to thrive and envision new life, inside and outside the academy.

Book Synopsis Leoneanthology: Contemporary Short Stories and Poems from Sierra Leone by : Hallowell, Gbanabom
Download or read book Leoneanthology: Contemporary Short Stories and Poems from Sierra Leone written by Hallowell, Gbanabom and published by Sierra Leonean Writers Series. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is acknowledged that creative writing, anywhere, remains a rather intensely personal affair, without being private. And indeed, it is because of the lack of privacy in creative writing that a nation should encourage the growth of its literary tradition. Writers do not just tell their stories or poets show their emotions; in their moods, they assume a multidimensional posture so as to be able to tell universally acceptable stories to appeal to different human senses. The contributors to this anthology are mostly first time writers, whose works have not appeared in mainstream literary journals and publications. While a few names among these contributors may be known in the local Sierra Leonean literary circles as having produced one kind of work or the other, their names are largely unknown outside of Sierra Leone. This situation has to change and is the reason that Leoneanthology has been compiled and published.
