Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Questions for the People, at the Presidential Election: Address of John Lothrop Motley, Before the Parker Fraternity, at the Music Hall, October 20, 1868 I have been invited to say something to-night on the great subject which is now agitating the country. It is certainly the duty of every good citizen to examine for himself the questions at issue, when a con ict like this is shaking. Half a continent, and is to be decided between the rising and setting of the sun, on a day rapidly approaching. And it seems equally his duty, after having thoroughly satisfied himself upon the merits of the great debate, to do what in him lies for the furtherance of that which be firmly believes the Right. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the days after Donald Trump’s unexpected victory on election night 2016, The New York Times, CNN, and other leading media outlets reached out to one of the few pundits who had correctly predicted the outcome, Allan J. Lichtman. While many election forecasters base their findings exclusively on public opinion polls, Lichtman looks at the underlying fundamentals that have driven every presidential election since 1860. Using his 13 historical factors or “keys” (four political, seven performance, and two personality), Lichtman had been predicting Trump’s win since September 2016. In the updated 2024 edition, he applies the keys to every presidential election since 1860 and shows readers the current state of the 2024 race. In doing so, he dispels much of the mystery behind electoral politics and challenges many traditional assumptions. An indispensable resource for political junkies!

Book excerpt: What's in your coffee cup: Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts? Hetherington and Weiler explain how even our smallest choices speak volumes about us-- especially when it comes to our personalities and our politics. Liberals and conservatives seem to occupy different worlds because we have fundamentally different worldviews: systems of values which shape our lives and decisions in the most elemental ways. If we're to overcome our seemingly intractable differences, we must first learn to master the psychological impulses that give rise to them, and to understand how politicians manipulate our mindsets for their own benefit.

Book excerpt: The passage of Citizens United by the Supreme Court in 2010 sparked a renewed debate about campaign spending by large political action committees, or Super PACs. Its ruling said that it is okay for corporations and labor unions to spend as much as they want in advertising and other methods to convince people to vote for or against a candidate. This book provides a wide range of opinions on the issue. Includes primary and secondary sources from a variety of perspectives; eyewitnesses, scientific journals, government officials, and many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voter perceptions of the personal traits of presidential candidates are widely regarded to be important influences on the vote. Media pundits frequently explain the outcome of presidential elections in terms of the personal appeal of the candidates. Despite the emphasis on presidential character traits in the media, the scholarly investigation in this area is limited. In this book, David Holian and Charles Prysby set out to examine the effect that trait perceptions have on the vote, how these perceptions are shaped by other attitudes and evaluations, and what types of voters are most likely to cast a ballot on the basis of the character traits of the presidential candidates. Using the American National Election Studies (ANES) surveys, the authors find that traits do have a very substantial effect on the vote, that different candidates have advantages on different traits, and that the opinions expressed by media pundits about how the candidates are viewed by the voters are often simplistic, and sometimes quite mistaken. Character traits are important to voters, but we need a better and more complete understanding of how and why these factors influence voters. An essential read which provides a clear and original argument to all those interested in furthering their understanding of the importance of candidate character traits for the quality of American elections and democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most research on two-party elections has considered the outcome as a single, dichotomous event: either one or the other party wins. In this groundbreaking book, James Fowler and Oleg Smirnov investigate not just who wins, but by how much, and they marshal compelling evidence that mandates-in the form of margin of victory-matter. Using theoretical models, computer simulation, carefully designed experiments, and empirical data, the authors show that after an election the policy positions of both parties move in the direction preferred by the winning party-and they move even more if the victory is large. In addition, Fowler and Smirnov not only show that the divergence between the policy positions of the parties is greatest when the previous election was close, but also that policy positions are further influenced by electoral volatility and ideological polarization. This pioneering book will be of particular interest to political scientists, game theoreticians, and other scholars who study voting behavior and its short-term and long-range effects on public policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of John Lothrop Motley is a subject that has been too long ignored by biographers. Certainly, he is one of our most distinguished authors and, in the opinion of this writer, he can be fairly ranked in eminence to the historian of the Mexican Conquest, William H. Pres cott. To a large extent, Motley's adult life revolved around some of the most important and curious scenes of American history, particularly the Civil War. During this time he held the post of an Ambassador of the United States, and, by his individual efforts, aided substantially the Federal war effort. It is chiefly, however, as an Historian that Motley deserves to be recommended to the attention of the public. Motley's theme was the struggle for national and individual human liberty, which, as he conceived it, was the greatest of human blessings. The story of The Rise of The Dutch Republic, against one of the greatest tyrannies, both political and religious, ever exercised by men over men, is not only one the great stories of history, but reflects perfectly Motley's own high of aspirations for his fellow-man.
