It contains both official papers and private letters; speeches and other public statements of policy. The Editors have had access to a large number of unpublished materials, public and private, so that many of the documents that they have chosen are new and reveal a striking continuity of ideas in British diplomacy, despite opposed parties and even opposing policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is foreign policy made? Who makes it? To what conscious and unconscious influences are policy-makers subject? What is distinctive about the immensely complex process as it unfolds in Britain? And what, therefore, is distinctive and characteristic about Britain’s foreign policy today? Who in Britain, has the decisive word? Why is the Foreign Office the king-pin of the system? Why does Parliament count for so little? Does public opinion count at all? Originally published in 1968, these are some of the questions which this book considers in the course of a tightly argued but very readable analysis. Some had been considered on their own elsewhere, but this study represented the first attempt by a contemporary political scientist to pull together, in brief compass, all the relevant threads – including the constitutional, the political, the institutional and the sociological. It is done, moreover, on the basis of a sharp assessment of the type of foreign policy problem that most notably confronted Britain at the time. The author has been successively journalist, official of the Israel Government, and university lecturer in politics. Throughout, his special interests and activities have been in the sphere of international affairs and it was while teaching International Relations at the University of Sussex that he wrote this book. He combines the experience of one who has seen the policy being made from the inside with the theoretical insight of the political scientist; he assesses with a sympathetic but unemotional detachment the constraints on the formation of British foreign policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Labour came to power in 1997 promising to modernize Britain and its role in the world. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown made ambitious pledges and launched bold policy initiatives. After thirteen years during which Britain became mired in divisive and costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, New Labour's early promises€came to resemble€little more than the cynical political 'spin' which the government was so often accused of producing. Criticised as a poodle to the US and a deeply divisive presence in the European Union, where did it go so badly wrong for New Labour's conduct of foreign policy? This book provides a fresh and challenging perspective on British foreign policy during the New Labour years, 1997-2010. The collection is themed around the development of a brand new model of British foreign policy in three interlocking circles: Identity, Ethics and Power. The contributors are as one in arguing that the conceptual basis of British foreign policy action needs a more radical overhaul than New Labour either promised or provided. €.--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book excerpt: British foreign policy under Margaret Thatcher has been completely misunderstood by friends and foes alike. The former praise her strong personality, her willingness to stick up for Britain in Europe, and the loyal support she provided the Americans in the last decisive flare up of their rivalry with the USSR. Her foes condemn her for precisely the same reasons. Both agree, however, it is not for her contribution to foreign policy that she will be remembered, as she remained stuck in the categories of the Cold War and earlier. Sharp takes issue with this reading and by assessing her whole international record from 1979 to 1990, demonstrates how Thatcher emerged as the first authentic statesman of the post-Cold War. It was Thatcher who realized that the fading of the Cold War provided new opportunities for independent and assertive action by the European great powers, and it was Thatcher who recognized the revived importance of nationalism, not just as a constraint upon international cooperation, but as the positive cornerstone on which all such cooperation must still be built.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1972, offers a detailed analysis of the post-war formulation of foreign policy, as Britain sought to detach itself from its imperialist past and moved towards a European future. The contributors - all experts in their fields - together provide a comprehensive commentary on the complexities of the external pressures that moulded British foreign policy during these years. The subjects covered highlight the dichotomy of, and interaction between, residual obligations and new goals and national aspirations. These include the examination of past policies regarding the Commonwealth, South-East Asia, NATO, and the 'special relationship' with the U.S.A., as well as multi-national companies and Britain's place in the changing global society. This reissue will of particular interest to students and academics researching the history of British foreign policy, international diplomacy and development, and post colonialism.
