Book excerpt: Derivatives Markets is a thorough and well-presented textbook that offers readers an introduction to derivatives instruments, with a gentle introduction to mathematical finance, and provides a working knowledge of derivatives to a wide area of market participants. This new and accessible book provides a lucid, down-to-earth, theoretically rigorous but applied introduction to derivatives. Many insights have been discovered since the seminal work in the 1970s and the text provides a bridge to and incorporates them. It develops the skill sets needed to both understand and to intelligently use derivatives. These skill sets are developed in part by using concept checks that test the reader's understanding of the material as it is presented. The text discusses some fairly sophisticated topics not usually discussed in introductory derivatives texts. For example, real-world electronic market trading platforms such as CME’s Globex. On the theory side, a much needed and detailed discussion of what risk-neutral valuation really means in the context of the dynamics of the hedge portfolio. The text is a balanced, logical presentation of the major derivatives classes including forward and futures contracts in Part I, swaps in Part II, and options in Part III. The material is unified by providing a modern conceptual framework and exploiting the no-arbitrage relationships between the different derivatives classes. Some of the elements explained in detail in the text are: Hedging, Basis Risk, Spreading, and Spread Basis Risk Financial Futures Contracts, their Underlying Instruments, Hedging and Speculating OTC Markets and Swaps Option Strategies: Hedging and Speculating Risk-Neutral Valuation and the Binomial Option Pricing Model Equivalent Martingale Measures: The Modern Approach to Option Pricing Option Pricing in Continuous Time: from Bachelier to Black-Scholes and Beyond. Professor Goldenberg’s clear and concise explanations and end-of-chapter problems, guide the reader through the derivatives markets, developing the reader’s skill sets needed in order to incorporate and manage derivatives in a corporate or risk management setting. This textbook is for students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, as well as for those with an interest in how and why these markets work and thrive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1991. This book addresses a critical aspect of Soviet maneuver theory that has been almost totally neglected in Western analysis, specifically, Soviet concern for tactical maneuver. Since the 1930s, the Soviets have consistently argued that operational maneuver can be successful only if conducted in conjunction with equally successful tactical maneuver, carried out primarily by forward detachments. Forward detachments, the primary tactical maneuver forces tasked with performing critical combat functions, emerged in theory in the 1930s and flourished on the basis of virtually untested concepts until the initial phases of Operation Barbarossa, when the Soviet mobile force structure was destroyed in a matter of weeks. Forward detachments again emerged after the Stalin grad Operation in 1943, when the Soviet General Staff required their use to spearhead all operations by mobile forces. After mid-1943, forward detachments led the operations of all tank armies and tank and mechanized corps, particularly during exploitation operations. By war's end all forces, mobile and rifle alike, employed forward detachments to lead their operations during the exploitation stage of operations. Forward detachments preempted enemy defenses and collectively formed a coordinated network of forward mobile units which provided coherence to the vast array of advancing Soviet mobile and rifle forces. In the late 1960s, the forward detachment received renewed attention as a critical element which could assist in the conduct of operational maneuver. Today, the Soviets believe that forward detachment operations are the key to conducting successful operations on a battlefield increasingly threatened by deadly high-precision weaponry. Tailored, flexible, battalion-size forward detachments, along with their operational counterparts (corps and brigades), may, in fact, be the model upon which the future Soviet force structure will be based. This volume surveys in detail the conceptual and organizational evolution of the forward detachment as the premier Soviet tactical maneuver force. It vividly demonstrates why forward detachments are suited by their versatile nature to be a precursor of future restructured Soviet units in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are upstart competitors taking deadly aim at your company's products and markets? Richard A. D'Aveni, author of the famous attacker's handbook Hypercompetition, presents coun-terrevolutionary strategies and tactics that any industry leader or established company can use to defend itself against revolutionaries, disrupters, or hypercompetitors. The secret lies in making the rules, not breaking them, D'Aveni says, because rule makers still rule. Arguing that "profits and prosperity come not from revolution but stability and orderly change," D'Aveni presents a commanding framework that will enable any resource-rich or clever defender to gain Strategic Supremacy by being first to define the playing field. D'Aveni demonstrates how global powerhouses such as Disney, Microsoft, and Procter & Gamble have achieved preeminence by reconceptualizing their product portfolios as powerful competitive arsenals he calls "spheres of influence." Essentially a new way to compete by restructuring portfolios around a core geographic/product market, spheres enable any company to influence the behavior and positioning of rivals. In immensely readable prose, D'Aveni describes how prevailing spheres of influence can be used to create legal business equivalents to a "concert of powers" and other industry structures that mix cooperation with competition. Just one of the potent functions of a corporate sphere, D'Aveni shows, is to contain competitors of equal size (as NBC contained ABC). Spheres can also be used to stabilize an entire industry's global power system. A glance at the detailed table of contents will provide a sense of the wealth of new information contained in this essential handbook of global warfare, including "how-to" tools the reader will need to measure and map the pattern of competitive pressure in any industry and to interpret the meaning and strategic implications of these pressure patterns for his or her position within the industry's power hierarchy.

The object-oriented concepts of encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism are covered, while the book remains centered on abstract data types.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German Army of World War II considered itself an offensive, mobile force. The experiences in the trenches in World War I had done much to shape its concept of field fortification, and its mobile warfare ethos was intended to prevent the previous war's stalemate. This book addresses frontline defensive field fortifications, built by infantrymen using local materials, and includes rifle platoon positions, trenches, crew-served weapon positions, bunkers, dugouts, shelters and more. It also covers anti-tank and anti-personnel obstacles, as well as field camouflage methods and construction methods. The integration of these positions into permanent systems and theatre-specific defences are also discussed.
