The reports furnished by the Superintendent and Treasurer present full statements in regard to the patients and finances of the hospital. It is only necessary for us to refer to them without repeating them. It appears from the table furnished by the Superintendent, that the whole number of patients in the hospital at the end of the year was four hundred and thirty-nine, the largest number at the end of any year except the four years immediately preceding the opening of the Taunton Hospital. This increase in the number of patients is the more worthy of notice, because it has arisen in spite of the relief afforded our crowded hospital, by the great reduction of the number of state paupers through the intervention of the Board of State Charities, which has, from time to time, transferred the greater part of them elsewhere. This was deemed a step in the right dirce tion, and was cordially approved by the trustees. These plans are now in a large measure perfected, and the new department will be opened with the beginning of the official year under the especial charge of Dr. Adolf Meyer, who entered upon his service at the hospital early in November. During the sum mer Dr. Meyer visited Europe, accomplishing an incredible amount of work, and bringing back with him the latest results of the progress made by students in the old world. He selected much apparatus for the new laboratory, which has'been fitted up and which will no doubt prove a very useful adjunct in the daily work of the hospital. For many years the hospital has been so crowded with patients that the officers have been overwhelmed with routine duties. The material wants of the large colony - equal to the whole of Massachusetts in early Colonial days - have made it impossible to give to individual cases the special care and attention which would have been gladly devoted to them. Among their other duties, the first consideration of the Trustees has been the interest of the hospital, and the persons committed to their charge. The number of patients has been unusually large, and the character of many of the cases has been pronounced by the Superintendent as turbulent; but this may be partially owing to the exposed situation of the hospital to the noise of a busy and populous city, which immediately surrounds it. There has been a more than usual amount of sickness dur ing the year among the patients. In June small-pox appeared in one of the wards, the source of infection being entirely unknown. By immediately removing those attacked to a vacant cottage 011 the new farm, the number Of cases was limited to three, with no fatal result, and no panic was caused either in the house or in the neighborhood. In August and September a number of cases of dysentery occurred, and several who were attacked died. In only one case, however, could the fatal result be attributed to dysentery alone.
