Book excerpt: Imam al-Nawawi's 40 Hadith have come to be known as the most comprehensive, and holistic, compilation/collection of hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) that convey the essence of Islam.Imam al-Nawawi's collection of 40 Hadiths is one of the most important collections of hadiths we have today. He actually compiled a total of 42 hadiths for this collection, not 40. Allah (swt) granted him blessing and success in his work so that he could make great contributions to Islam before passing away at a relatively young age.The Imam was a scholar in many different disciplines of Islamic studies. The vastness of his works in these different areas is so great that if an individual decides to study fiqh, hadith, spirituality, or Quran; one would need to pass through Imam al- Nawawi. Along with the 40 Hadiths, he authored Riyad al-Saliheen, Al-Adhkar, and commentary of Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari.

Book excerpt: Providing a concise overview of 40 Hadiths?sayings of the prophet Muhammad?this compilation offers an in-depth investigation of the second essential source of Islamic authority after the Qur?an. Following the prophet?s encouraged tradition of focusing on a select 40 of the proverbs instead of the entire collection, this volume consists of the original Arabic text, English translations, and informative commentary. Compiled from the works of prominent Muslim scholar Fethullah Glen, this study provides a clear portrait of how the prophet Muhammad established the principles of Islamic life through his teachings.

Book excerpt: I have considered collecting forty more important than all of those, and they would be forty ḥadīths inclusive of all that, but each ḥadīth would be a great precept from those of the religion - one that scholars had described as being the "axis" of Islam or "half" of Islam or "a third" of it or something similar. Furthermore, I would commit myself, regarding these forty, to their being authentic, and most of them are [found] within the two Ṣaḥeeḥs of al-Bukhāri and Muslim. I cite them with the chains of narration deleted in order to make their memorization easy and their benefit widespread, in-sha-Allah taʽālā. I then follow up [each of] them with a section defining their more obscure wordings.Everyone desiring the Hereafter ought to know these ḥadīths for what they contain of important information and because they alert one to all kinds of obedience, which is obvious to whoever reflects upon it. Upon Allah is my dependence, and to Him is my commitment, and [He is] my support. To Him belongs [all] praise and favor, and from Him is [all] success and protection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a comprehensive study of early Islamic history, Wilferd Madelung examines the conflict which developed after Muhammad's death for the leadership of the Muslim community. He pursues the history of this conflict through the reign of the four 'Rightly Guided' caliphs to its climax in the first inter-Muslim war. The outcome of the war, which marked the demise of the reign of the Early Companions, resulted in the lasting schism between Sunnite and Shi'ite Islam. Contrary to recent scholarly trends, the author brings out Ali's early claim to legitimate succession, which gained support from the Shi'a, and offers a convincing reinterpretation of early Islamic history. This book will make a major contribution to the debate over succession. Wilferd Madelung's book The Succession to Muhammad has been awarded the Best Book of the Year prize by the Islamic Republic of Iran for the year 1997.

Soon Islam was embroiled in civil war, pitting its founder's controversial wife Aisha against his son-in-law Ali, and shattering Muhammad’s ideal of unity. Combining meticulous research with compelling storytelling, After the Prophet explores the volatile intersection of religion and politics, psychology and culture, and history and current events. It is an indispensable guide to the depth and power of the Shia–Sunni split.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam's fourth caliph, Ali, can be considered one of the most revered figures in Islamic history. His nearly universal portrayal in Muslim literature as a pious authority obscures centuries of contestation and the eventual rehabilitation of his character. In this book, Nebil Husayn examines the enduring legacy of the nawasib, early Muslims who disliked Ali and his descendants. The nawasib participated in politics and scholarly discussions on religion at least until the ninth century. However, their virtual disappearance in Muslim societies has led many to ignore their existence and the subtle ways in which their views subsequently affected Islamic historiography and theology. By surveying medieval Muslim literature across multiple genres and traditions including the Sunni, Mu'tazili, and Ibadi, Husayn reconstructs the claims and arguments of the nawasib and illuminates the methods that Sunni scholars employed to gradually rehabilitate the image of Ali from a villainous character to a righteous one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and legacy of one of Mohammad’s closest confidants and Islam’s patron saint: Ali ibn Abi Talib Ali ibn Abi Talib is arguably the single most important spiritual and intellectual authority in Islam after prophet Mohammad. Through his teachings and leadership as fourth caliph, Ali nourished Islam. But Muslims are divided on whether he was supposed to be Mohammad’s political successor—and he continues to be a polarizing figure in Islamic history. Hassan Abbas provides a nuanced, compelling portrait of this towering yet divisive figure and the origins of sectarian division within Islam. Abbas reveals how, after Mohammad, Ali assumed the spiritual mantle of Islam to spearhead the movement that the prophet had led. While Ali’s teachings about wisdom, justice, and selflessness continue to be cherished by both Shia and Sunni Muslims, his pluralist ideas have been buried under sectarian agendas and power politics. Today, Abbas argues, Ali’s legacy and message stands against that of ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and Taliban.
