Book Synopsis The Idea of the Cottage in English Architecture, 1760 - 1860 by : Daniel Maudlin
Download or read book The Idea of the Cottage in English Architecture, 1760 - 1860 written by Daniel Maudlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Idea of the Cottage in English Architecture is a history of the late Georgian phenomenon of the architect-designed cottage and the architectural discourse that articulated it. It is a study of small buildings built on country estates, and not so small buildings built in picturesque rural settings, resort towns and suburban developments. At the heart of the English idea of the cottage is the Classical notion of retreat from the city to the countryside. This idea was adopted and adapted by the Augustan-infused culture of eighteenth-century England where it gained popularity with writers, artists, architects and their wealthy patrons who from the later eighteenth century commissioned retreats, gate-lodges, estate workers' housing and seaside villas designed to 'appear as cottages'. The enthusiasm for cottages within polite society did not last. By the mid-nineteenth century, cottage-related building and book publishing had slowed and the idea of the cottage itself was eventually lost beneath the Tudor barge-boards and decorative chimneystacks of the Historic Revival. And yet while both designer and consumer have changed over time, the idea of the cottage as the ideal rural retreat continues to resonate through English architecture and English culture.
Book Synopsis The Garden History of Devon by : Todd Gray
Download or read book The Garden History of Devon written by Todd Gray and published by University of Exeter Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Garden History of Devon is a reference guide to historical sources for over 200 Devon gardens. It also provides an introduction for would-be garden historians on how to conduct garden research. The book is the result of an exploration of the archival resources of Devon's garden history; the objective being to provide signposts to research material for those interested in the development of Devon's gardens. The entries, arranged alphabetically, begin with a brief section describing each garden's history, amplified by quotations from contemporary travellers and diarists; following the descriptive sections are listings of documents, printed sources and illustrations relating to each garden. The greater part of this material is unknown to garden historians.
Download or read book Birdie Bowers written by Anne Strathie and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry 'Birdie' Bowers realised his life's ambition when he was selected for Captain Scott's Terra Nova expedition to the Antarctic, yet he also met his death on the journey. Born to a sea-faring father and adventurous mother on the Firth of Clyde, Bowers' boyhood obsession with travel and adventure took him round the world several times and his life appears, with hindsight, to have been a ceaseless preparation for his ultimate, Antarctic challenge. Although just 5ft 4in, he was a bundle of energy; knowledgeable, indefatigable and the ultimate team player. In Scott's words, he was 'a marvel'. This new biography, drawing on Bowers' letters, journals and previously neglected material, sheds new light on Bowers and tells the full story of the hardy naval officer who could always lift his companions' spirits.

Book Synopsis The Perfection of England by : Sam Smiles
Download or read book The Perfection of England written by Sam Smiles and published by Lund Humphries Publishers Limited. This book was released on 1995 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often regarded as quintessentially English, Devon has for years provided artists with a rich sense of inspiration. The Perfection of England shows how Devon grew steadily in importance from the late eighteenth to late nineteenth centuries to become one of the most popular areas for picturesque touring. With the exception of Constable, virtually every major landscape artist of this era visited Devon, and this catalogue looks at how a wide variety of British artists, including Turner, responded to the charm of Devon's unique combination of landscape elements: coastal views, pastoral landscape, the expanses of Exmoor and Dartmoor, picturesque cottages, industrial sites and historical towns.Exquisitely illustrated, this catalogue brings to life the charm and diversity of Devon through the eyes of some of our best loved British artists.
