Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Delaware National Guard traces its roots to 1655, when the Swedish Colonial government formed a militia to defend itself. That tradition carried through Dutch and then English control of the colony. The militia served in all five French and Indian Wars and then distinguished itself during the Revolutionary War as the First Delaware Regiment of the Continental Army, earning its "Blue Hen" nickname. The Delaware militia continued to serve in every major war, and currently it remains in the forefront. Images of America: Delaware Army National Guard presents images of this fabled organization that survived from the Spanish-American War to the present. The people, places, equipment, and facilities of the Delaware National Guard are illustrated in this compilation of historic photographs from the collection of the Delaware Military Heritage and Education Foundation. Brig. Gen. Kennard R. Wiggins Jr. (DE ANG Retired) is a third-generation Delaware Guardsman who served in the National Guard for over 37 years. Currently he serves as executive director of the Delaware Military Heritage and Education Foundation, Inc., which maintains an extensive archive of Delaware National Guard images. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.

What had been a pastoral collection of farms and merchants was rapidly transformed into a dynamic, economically thriving society. From the immense munitions contribution of the DuPont Company to burgeoning shipbuilding on the Wilmington waterfront, the First State took a leading role in meeting the war's industrial demand. It fortified coastal defenses and thwarted U-boat attacks on its coast. Its men and women learned of valor and sacrifice as thousands of native sons fought in Europe and daughters volunteered on the homefront. Author Kennard R. Wiggins Jr. traces the history that changed the state forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the First State as a representative example for all three American shorelines, Delaware’s Ghost Towers reveals how the mysterious World War 2 concrete sentinels standing along Delaware’s ocean beaches were used to guard against penetration by powerful German battleships bent on shelling Philadelphia and the oil refineries of Wilmington. The book tells the story of the nearly forgotten Coast Artillery soldiers, who were the front-line, standing a combat-ready watch during the anxious early months of the war, when the first invasion of the Homeland since the War of 1812 was considered a frightening real possibility. From a slow start during neglectful pre-war days, the Coast Artillery grew to operate the US’ most heavily armed installations, pointing the Army’s biggest guns of the war out to sea. Their mission is described against a background of surrounding World War 2 events, German naval and commando operations in US waters and on US beaches - an important Last Stand worth remembering.
Download or read book Fort Mott written by Andres G. Grant and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fort Mott held a prominent role in the military history of the area from the late 1800s until WWII. Located on the banks of the Delaware River, Fort Mott was once part of a three-fort system that protected the ports and industry of New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. When completed in 1896, Fort Mott was one of the most technologically advanced fortifications of the period. Originally called the Battery at Finns Point, in 1897 it was renamed in honor of Maj. Gen. Gershom Mott, a New Jersey native who commanded with distinction during the Civil War and later served as state treasurer and commander of New Jersey's National Guard. When fully garrisoned with troops, the Army post was its own little town, complete with a hospital, bakery, stores, and sport fields. Coast Artillery Corps soldiers manned the fort until 1944, when the Army decided to abandon the site. In 1947, the state purchased the property, and in 1951, Fort Mott State Park opened to the public. Today, many of the buildings and fortifications are open for tours, and ongoing preservation and rehabilitation efforts are preserving the site for future generations.

Some called this assemblage a gentlemans flying club, but in a few short years, it was tested for the first time in the Korean War. Since then, the Delaware Air National Guard has flown and fought in almost every corner of the globe. It answered the call in Vietnam, the Middle East, the Balkans, and most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. Celebrating 60 years of service, it has become a well-known local institution. The Blue Hen Air Force has evolved into a professional organization that shoulders a significant operational role for the U.S. Air Force and serves as a versatile emergency resource for the state of Delaware.

Book excerpt: Fort Miles is in Cape Henlopen State Park near historic Lewes and the site of Delawares first Dutch settlement. Named for Gen. Nelson Appleton Miles, this powerful seacoast fortification was built during World War II to defend the vital industries of the Delaware Valley. Included in this volume are rare vintage photographs of the forts heavy artillery, hundreds of 3,000-pound sea mines, and radar systems that searched the nearby ocean for the enemy surface fleet. Its powerful 12- and 16-inch guns could reach out between 15 and 25 miles to attack an adversary. Today, the fort is being reborn as one of the best World War II museums in the country; it is housed in a real World War II bunker and includes the barracks complex and fire control towers.
