Book excerpt: -- The first photographic study of Fort Fisher -- Fort Fisher was the largest combined Army-Navy operations effort of the civil war -- The fourth book in our acclaimed series "Battles & Campaigns of the Carolinas" This magnificent photographic history of Fort Fisher features 36 photos (20 of which are previously unpublished) of this massive seacost fortification outside Wilmington, North Carolina. The stunning array of photographs, together with numerous modern images, are cross-referenced to an outstanding series of maps that depict both battles at Fort Fisher -- the attack by the Army-Navy assault columns on January 15, 1865, and the hand-to-hand fighting inside the fort. Interpreted with a detailed narrative history of the entire campaign and based on almost 25 years of research, "Fort Fisher Illustrated" fills in a significant gap in North Carolina and Civil War history.

Book excerpt: Full campaign and battle history of the largest combined operation in U.S. military history prior to World War II. By late 1864, Wilmington was the last major Confederate blockade-running seaport open to the outside world. The final battle for the port city's protector--Fort Fisher--culminated in the largest naval bombardment of the American Civil War, and one of the worst hand-to-hand engagements in four years of bloody fighting. Copious illustrations, including 54 original maps drawn by the author. Fresh new analysis on the fall of Fort Fisher, with a fascinating comparison to Russian defenses at Sebastopol during the Crimean War.

Book excerpt: P>The only comprehensive account of the Battle of Fort Fisher and the basis for the television documentary Confederate Goliath, Rod Gragg's award-winning book chronicles in detail one of the most dramatic events of the American Civil War. Known as "the Gibraltar of the South," Fort Fisher was the largest, most formidable coastal fortification in the Confederacy, by late 1864 protecting its lone remaining seaport -- Wilmington, North Carolina. Gragg's powerful, fast-paced narrative recounts the military actions, politicking, and personality clashes involved in this unprecedented land and sea battle. It vividly describes the greatest naval bombardment of the war and shows how the fort's capture in January 1865 hastened the South's surrender three months later. In his foreword, historian Edward G. Longacre surveys Gragg's work in the context of Civil War history and literature, citing Confederate Goliath as "the finest book-length account of a significant but largely forgotten episode in our nation's most critical conflict."

Its capture with the resulting loss of all the Cape Fear River defences, and of Wilmington, the great importing depot of the South, effectually ended all blockade running. Lee sent me word that Fort Fisher must be held or he could not subsist his army. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Step into the past in this visual history of Carolina Beach in North Carolina through the lens of over 200 vintage images. Federal Point was once the name of a peninsula 15 miles south of Wilmington, bounded by the Cape Fear River, the Myrtle Grove Sound, and the Atlantic Ocean. Fort Fisher, Kure Beach, Carolina Beach, and Seabreeze now line its sandy shores. Fort Fisher played a pivotal role in the Civil War, and when it fell in 1865, the Confederacy lost its last supply line. A century later, the Fort Fisher Hermit became a local legend, teaching a litany of common sense and simplicity to legions of visitors. Carolina Beach and Kure Beach suffered a spate of fires and hurricanes that destroyed amusement park rides, arcades, and especially fishing piers. Seabreeze was an all-black resort during the Jim Crow era, and its greatest legacy is the R&B music and dance of the 1940s that gave rise to today's ever-popular beach music and shag dancing. The Army Corps of Engineers created Snow's Cut in 1930, connecting the river to the sound and turning the peninsula into an island that is now known as Pleasure Island.
