Book excerpt: DANS SES TRAVAUX, BECKER [1962, 1975] DISTINGUE DEUX TYPES DE FORMATIONS : LA FORMATION GENERALE QUI AUGMENTE LA PRODUCTIVITE MARGINALE DU SALARIE DE MANIERE EQUIVALENTE DANS TOUTES LES ENTREPRISES ET LA FORMATION SPECIFIQUE UNIQUEMENT UTILISABLE DANS L'ENTREPRISE QUI LA DELIVRE. AU TERME DE SON ANALYSE, BECKER CONCLUT QUE L'ENTREPRISE N'A PAS INTERET A FINANCER LA FORMATION GENERALE. LE SALARIE FORME RISQUE EN EFFET DE PARTIR POUR VALORISER SA FORMATION GENERALE AILLEURS. L'OBJET DE NOTRE THESE EST DE JUSTIFIER LE FINANCEMENT DE LA FORMATION GENERALE PAR L'ENTREPRISE. NOUS NOUS APPUYONS DANS NOTRE ANALYSE SUR LE CARACTERE STRATEGIQUE DE LA FORMATION GENERALE, FACTEUR NEGLIGEE PAR LES ETUDES REALISEES SUR LE SUJET. NOUS ADOPTONS UN CADRE DE CONCURRENCE SCHUMPETERIENNE. CE CONTEXTE PLACE L'INNOVATION AU COEUR DE LA STRATEGIE DES ENTREPRISES. CELLES-CI SONT DANS UNE GUERRE PERPETUELLE OU SEULES LES PLUS INNOVANTES SE MAINTIENNENT SUR LE MARCHE. DANS CE CADRE, LES ENTREPRISES NE DOIVENT PLUS SE LIMITER A LA FORMATION SPECIFIQUE, COMME LE SUPPOSE BECKER, MAIS DOIVENT AUSSI FINANCER LA FORMATION GENERALE. EN EFFET, CELLE-CI STIMULE SON ACTIVITE INNOVATRICE ET LUI PERMET DE GAGNER UN PROFIT EXCEPTIONNEL, LA QUASI-RENTE DE L'INNOVATION. AINSI, UNE ENTREPRISE FORMATRICE RECUPERE PAR LE BIAIS DE L'INNOVATION DES RENDEMENTS QUI COUVRENT SON INVESTISSEMENT EN FORMATION GENERALE. LES RESULTATS DES ESTIMATIONS CONFIRMENT NOS PROPOSITIONS THEORIQUES : L'INVESTISSEMENT DE L'ENTREPRISE EN FORMATION GENERALE AUGMENTE SA PROBABILITE D'INNOVATION. CECI MET EN EVIDENCE L'IMPORTANCE DE TYPE DEFORMATION DANS LE PROCESSUS D'INNOVATION. LES RESULTATS MONTRENT EGALEMENT QUE L'INNOVATION EN PRODUIT AUGMENTE A COURT TERME LA PROFITABILITE DE L'ENTREPRISE. TOUTEFOIS, L'INVESTISSEMENT EN FORMATION GENERALE N'A PAS D'EFFET DIRECT SUR LA PROFITABILITE. AINSI, LA FORMATION GENERALE NE GARANTIT PAS DIRECTEMENT UNE MEILLEURE PROFITABILITE MAIS ELLE L'AUGMENTE PAR LE BIAIS DE L'INNOVATION.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Ostensibly the European integration process has been interconnected with science and technology only in the last decade. On the other hand, since the 1950s EEC member states and would-be members have been engaged in several projects and attempts to cooperate in science and technology. National governments not only chose the intergovernmental way, but also they tried to take advantage of the communitarian framework. These attempts produced some successes inside the EEC including the European Commission's framework programme. Appart from some projects discussed at EEC level on automobile standardisation, nuclear energy and supplies during oil crisis, European cooperation in aircraft or electric power was successfully experimented but outside the communitarian networks. These experiences and debates on a European techno-scientific construction encountered competition from across the Atlantic as well as within Europe. As the most recent developments seem to prove, the European Union has to play a role of technological innovator. Thanks to a transnational and interdisciplinary historical approach, are we able to suggest which role, and by which trends?

Book excerpt: Innovation, in economic activity, in managerial concepts and in engineering design, results from creative activities, entrepreneurial strategies and the business climate. Innovation leads to technological, organizational and commercial changes, due to the relationships between enterprises, public institutions and civil society organizations. These innovation networks create new knowledge and contribute to the dissemination of new socio-economic and technological models, through new production and marketing methods. Innovation Economics, Engineering and Management Handbook 1 is the first of the two volumes that comprise this book. The main objectives across both volumes are to study the innovation processes in todays information and knowledge society; to analyze how links between research and business have intensified; and to discuss the methods by which innovation emerges and is managed by firms, not only from a local perspective but also a global one. The studies presented in these two volumes contribute toward an understanding of the systemic nature of innovations and enable reflection on their potential applications, in order to think about the meaning of growth and prosperity.

However, the concept of innovation and the role of the engineer are now changing as a result of globalization, the digital revolution, growing inequalities and environmental concerns. Training Engineers for Innovation therefore analyzes the ways in which the educational systems for engineers are adapting to these new demands, as well as the conditions in which this training has developed. This book brings together the works of a consortium of researchers dedicated to the subject area as part of the Innov’Ing 2020 project. Its contributors present various means to devise effective pedagogies adapted to a holistic approach to innovation which incorporates the technical, economic, social, ethical and environmental dimensions of engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Education Leadership and Management have become increasingly important throughout the years due to the complexities that have to be addressed by universities worldwide. This can be seen not only in professionalisation in fields such as faculty management or in areas of quality assurance and internationalisation, but also in the need for exchange and training in academic leadership, such as that of deans or study deans, or of university leadership in general. The Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) is addressing this need in emerging countries by building platforms of exchange and offering training courses. Not only is the programme supporting capacity building of human resources, but it is also specifically focusing on inducing change within the universities, such as introducing new instruments or tools in the area of quality assurance and internationalisation, and addressing specific challenges or setting up new structures in the form of projects in the frame of the training. The ‘National Multiplication Trainings’ Programme under DIES is further addressing the sustainability and multiplication of the DIES Programme, that is, alumni are enabled to implement capacity building in higher education leadership and management in their national context. The articles within this volume of the “Potsdamer Beiträge zur Hochschulforschung” (Potsdam Contributions to Higher Education Research) analyse and share the experiences of such training programmes held in Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Malaysia, Kenya, and Uganda. They all revolve around the best ways to address the needs and challenges in higher education leadership and management, and in building capacities in these areas.
