Dans le but d'étudier l'influence de ces structures granulaires sur la ségrégation, nous avons développé un modèle original couplant une approche en Automates Cellulaires (CA), support à la modélisation microscopique du développement des grains, et une approche en Eléments Finis (FE), modélisant l'évolution des variables macroscopiques. Le couplage défini entre CA et FE permet de tenir compte du déplacement des grains alors que les équations macroscopiques sont résolues dans l'approximation d'un solide fixe. Les résultats obtenus pour la chute de cristaux de NH4CI retrouvent les tailles de grains mesurées et, partiellement, les vitesses de sédimentation. La simulation d'expériences de solidification de lingots d'alliage plomb-étain montre l'existence d'une déstabilisation au front conduisant à l'apparition de canaux ségrégés et l'influence de la structure sur la mésoségrégation.

Book excerpt: Lors de la solidification d'un alliage métallique, des hétérogénéités de composition en éléments d'alliage et des hétérogénéités de taille des structures apparaissent. La modélisation est un outil précieux dans la maitrise de la formation de ces hétérogénéités, qui sont incompatibles avec les exigences industrielles. Au niveau international, le code de calcul SOLID est l'unique code de solidification permettant la prise en compte simultanée de la germination, de la croissance et du transport des grains, de la convection naturelle et du retrait à la solidification à l'échelle industrielle. Le travail de thèse a pour but d'améliorer la description du couplage de la germination et de la croissance des grains dans ce modèle. La diffusion solutale, qui contrôle la croissance des grains, est ainsi modélisée par une longueur de diffusion prenant en compte à la fois l'avancée de l'interface grain-liquide et la convection de la phase liquide. A l'échelle microscopique, une troisième phase est également ajoutée afin d'améliorer la prédiction de la croissance des grains, notamment du développement de leur morphologie. Le modèle permet de prédire quantitativement la compétition entre germination et croissance à l'échelle microscopique. Le modèle est ensuite appliqué à des cas de coulée en lingot fixe et de coulée semi-continue afin d'étudier le couplage entre germination et croissance à l'échelle macroscopique, en présence de transport à la fois des grains, des germes et du soluté. Les prédictions du modèle sont comparées à des mesures expérimentales et permettent de mettre en évidence l'importance du transport, non seulement des grains mais également des germes, dans la formation des hétérogénéités. La prise en compte de la dendritisation des grains au cours de la solidification modifie également de façon importante les prédictions, même lorsque leur morphologie finale est globulaire.

Book excerpt: Semi-solid metal (SSM) processing, as a viable alternative manufacturing route to those of conventional casting and forging, has not yet been fully exploited despite nearly half a century since its introduction to the metal industry. The slow pace of adopting SSM routes may be due to various reasons, including capital costs, profit margins, and, most importantly, the lack of detailed analysis of various SSM processes in open literature to confidently establish their advantages over more conventional routes. Therefore, the SSM community must disseminate their findings more effectively to generate increased confidence in SSM processes in the eyes of our industrial leaders. As such, we have embarked on the task to invite the leaders in SSM research to share their findings in a Special Issue dedicated to semi-solid processing of metals and composites. SSM processing takes advantage of both forming and shaping characteristics usually employed for liquid and solid materials. In the absence of shear forces, the semi-solid metal has similar characteristics to solids, i.e., easily transferred and shaped; by applying a defined force, the viscosity is reduced and the material flows like a liquid. These unique dual characteristics have made SSM routes attractive alternatives to conventional casting on an industrial scale. With the intention of taking full advantage of SSM characteristics, it is crucial to understand SSM processing, including topics such as solidification and structural evolution, flow behavior through modelling and rheology, new processes and process control, alloy development, and properties in general. This Special Issue focuses on the recent research and findings in the field with the aim of filling the gap between industry and academia, and to shed light on some of the fundamentals of science and technology of semi-solid processing.
