In January 1959, a U.S. Senate Committee, of which John and Robert Kennedy were members, was investigating Mafia activities. The DEA asked Castro for the extradition of Mafiosos living in Cuba, and Castro’s denial of this request started the schism between the two nations. This first volume gathers chronologically information about the life and deeds of the young Fidel Castro, from 1945 until his ascendance to power on January 1959, and the Coup of President Urrutia in July of that year. High ranking officials conspired to take Castro out of power. Alerted by the KGB, Castro worked to destroy the conspiracy and establish his solid alliance with the Mafia. The second volume, on which Gutierrez is now working, begins with these actions and concludes on Friday, November 22, 1963, the moment in Dallas that changed America and the world.

Book excerpt: As language historians we believe that the subject of our study is neither natural languages nor idiolects which speakers have always been able to develop individually (loosely what Chomsky calls L-i), but rather the social constructions of reference shared by all speakers (basically what Chomsky terms as L-e ). In this context the language historian essentially studies how a public L-e is built such that it can be understood as the language of all (i.e. hiding L-i variations) and also how L-e succeed in replacing the primary reality of idiolects, even if only in the imagination. Writing represents a crucial turning point in language construction, because it made it possible to materialize the abstraction that, until then, related speakers could only guess and besides it comes into competition with individual languages. In modern centuries, the provision of grammars, dictionaries and other such learning tools and systematizing instruments strengthens the idea that, because of their normative character, languages can be learned through study. In, e.g., rats, the so-called vibrissal system, including long sensory hairs around the muzzle of the animals (vibrissae), is an essential part of tactile perception. Rats can determine the location, shape, and texture of an object by touching it with their vibrissae. Transferring these abilities to an artificial sensor design, the interaction between the hair/sensor shaft and different objects are analyzed. The sensor/hair shaft fulfills different functions in terms of a preprocessing of the captured signals. Therefore, by knowing and controlling these effects, the captured signals can be optimized in a way that particular information inside the captured signals is pronounced.
