Each chapter is a survey and can be viewed as an encyclopedia of the considered field, underlining the interconnections of Number Theory with Combinatorics, Numerical mathematics, Algebra, or Probability Theory. This reference work will be useful to specialists in number theory and discrete mathematics as well as mathematicians or scientists who need access to some of these results in other fields of research.
Book Synopsis Number Theory and Mathematical Logic by : Open University Course Team
Download or read book Number Theory and Mathematical Logic written by Open University Course Team and published by . This book was released on 2004-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unit we look at some theorems of a small but deeply significant fragment of number theory, called Q. We introduce the notion of a function being representable in a formal system. We shall discover that, although Q is quite a weak theory, it is sufficiently powerful to allow all total recursive functions (as discussed in unit ML03) to be representable in Q. This unit concludes with a discussion of diagonalization and Gödel's Diagonal Lemma.
Book Synopsis Famous Functions in Number Theory by : Bowen Kerins
Download or read book Famous Functions in Number Theory written by Bowen Kerins and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for precollege teachers by a collaborative of teachers, educators, and mathematicians, Famous Functions in Number Theory is based on a course offered in the Summer School Teacher Program at the Park City Mathematics Institute. But this book isn't a "course" in the traditional sense. It consists of a carefully sequenced collection of problem sets designed to develop several interconnected mathematical themes, and one of the goals of the problem sets is for readers to uncover these themes for themselves. Famous Functions in Number Theory introduces readers to the use of formal algebra in number theory. Through numerical experiments, participants learn how to use polynomial algebra as a bookkeeping mechanism that allows them to count divisors, build multiplicative functions, and compile multiplicative functions in a certain way that produces new ones. One capstone of the investigations is a beautiful result attributed to Fermat that determines the number of ways a positive integer can be written as a sum of two perfect squares. Famous Functions in Number Theory is a volume of the book series "IAS/PCMI-The Teacher Program Series" published by the American Mathematical Society. Each volume in that series covers the content of one Summer School Teacher Program year and is independent of the rest. Titles in this series are co-published with the Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute. Members of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) receive a 20% discount from list price.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the first volume of a two-volume textbook for undergraduates and is indeed the crystallization of a course offered by the author at the California Institute of Technology to undergraduates without any previous knowledge of number theory. For this reason, the book starts with the most elementary properties of the natural integers. Nevertheless, the text succeeds in presenting an enormous amount of material in little more than 300 pages."-—MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS

Book Synopsis An Invitation to Arithmetic Geometry by : Dino Lorenzini
Download or read book An Invitation to Arithmetic Geometry written by Dino Lorenzini and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2021-12-23 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extremely carefully written, masterfully thought out, and skillfully arranged introduction … to the arithmetic of algebraic curves, on the one hand, and to the algebro-geometric aspects of number theory, on the other hand. … an excellent guide for beginners in arithmetic geometry, just as an interesting reference and methodical inspiration for teachers of the subject … a highly welcome addition to the existing literature. —Zentralblatt MATH The interaction between number theory and algebraic geometry has been especially fruitful. In this volume, the author gives a unified presentation of some of the basic tools and concepts in number theory, commutative algebra, and algebraic geometry, and for the first time in a book at this level, brings out the deep analogies between them. The geometric viewpoint is stressed throughout the book. Extensive examples are given to illustrate each new concept, and many interesting exercises are given at the end of each chapter. Most of the important results in the one-dimensional case are proved, including Bombieri's proof of the Riemann Hypothesis for curves over a finite field. While the book is not intended to be an introduction to schemes, the author indicates how many of the geometric notions introduced in the book relate to schemes, which will aid the reader who goes to the next level of this rich subject.
Book Synopsis Analytic Number Theory by : Henryk Iwaniec
Download or read book Analytic Number Theory written by Henryk Iwaniec and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytic Number Theory distinguishes itself by the variety of tools it uses to establish results. One of the primary attractions of this theory is its vast diversity of concepts and methods. The main goals of this book are to show the scope of the theory, both in classical and modern directions, and to exhibit its wealth and prospects, beautiful theorems, and powerful techniques. The book is written with graduate students in mind, and the authors nicely balance clarity, completeness, and generality. The exercises in each section serve dual purposes, some intended to improve readers' understanding of the subject and others providing additional information. Formal prerequisites for the major part of the book do not go beyond calculus, complex analysis, integration, and Fourier series and integrals. In later chapters automorphic forms become important, with much of the necessary information about them included in two survey chapters.
Book Synopsis Elementary Number Theory: Primes, Congruences, and Secrets by : William Stein
Download or read book Elementary Number Theory: Primes, Congruences, and Secrets written by William Stein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-28 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about prime numbers, congruences, secret messages, and elliptic curves that you can read cover to cover. It grew out of undergr- uate courses that the author taught at Harvard, UC San Diego, and the University of Washington. The systematic study of number theory was initiated around 300B. C. when Euclid proved that there are in?nitely many prime numbers, and also cleverly deduced the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, which asserts that every positive integer factors uniquely as a product of primes. Over a thousand years later (around 972A. D. ) Arab mathematicians formulated the congruent number problem that asks for a way to decide whether or not a given positive integer n is the area of a right triangle, all three of whose sides are rational numbers. Then another thousand years later (in 1976), Di?e and Hellman introduced the ?rst ever public-key cryptosystem, which enabled two people to communicate secretely over a public communications channel with no predetermined secret; this invention and the ones that followed it revolutionized the world of digital communication. In the 1980s and 1990s, elliptic curves revolutionized number theory, providing striking new insights into the congruent number problem, primality testing, publ- key cryptography, attacks on public-key systems, and playing a central role in Andrew Wiles’ resolution of Fermat’s Last Theorem.

"Lang's books are always of great value for the graduate student and the research mathematician. This updated edition of Algebraic number theory is no exception."—-MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS
Download or read book Number Theory written by Henri Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-10 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this book is the solution of Diophantine equations, i.e., equations or systems of polynomial equations which must be solved in integers, rational numbers or more generally in algebraic numbers. This theme, in particular, is the central motivation for the modern theory of arithmetic algebraic geometry. In this text, this is considered through three of its most basic aspects. The book contains more than 350 exercises and the text is largely self-contained. Much more sophisticated techniques have been brought to bear on the subject of Diophantine equations, and for this reason, the author has included five appendices on these techniques.
