Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stirring tales of heroism at sea have been ingrained in the annals of maritime history since time immemorial. Christopher ColumbusÕs discovery of the New World, Queen Elizabeth IÕs defeat of the Spanish Armada, and Horatio NelsonÕs victory at Trafalgar are just some of BritainÕs most memorable naval triumphs. But what about the lesser-known tales from our seafaring past? The Victorian who invented a swimming machine in order to cross the English Channel; the capture of a Ôreal-lifeÕ mermaid; the lost pirate treasure of Albor‡n; the ghost of a murdered sailor who still haunts the streets of Portsmouth; and the daring explorers who vanished into the blue yonder, leaving behind nothing but a cryptic message in a champagne bottle Ð these are just some of our quirky naval stories that have been chronicled in verse and archived in newspaper clippings, and forgotten with the passage of time. Historian and genealogist Caroline Rochford has compiled 200 traditional songs and stories into this book, which offers an exciting, entertaining and eye-opening glimpse into our long lost maritime past.

Book excerpt: Set adrift on the tides of fate by the deaths of her parents and left wanting answers, Laura Callaway now lives with her uncle and his disapproving wife in North Cornwall. There she feels like a castaway, always viewed as an outsider even as she yearns to belong. While wreckers search for valuables along the windswept Cornwall coast--known for its many shipwrecks but few survivors--Laura searches for clues to the lives lost so she can write letters to next of kin and return keepsakes to rightful owners. When a man is washed ashore after a wreck, Laura acts quickly to protect him from a local smuggler determined to destroy him. As Laura and a neighbor care for the survivor, they discover he has curious wounds and, although he speaks in careful, educated English, his accent seems odd. Other clues wash ashore, and Laura soon realizes he is not who he seems to be. Despite the evidence against him, the mysterious man might provide her only chance to discover the truth about her parents' fate. With danger pursuing them from every side, and an unexpected attraction growing between them, will Laura ever find the answers she seeks?

Book excerpt: In 1951, musician Kenneth Peacock (1922–2000) secured a contract from the National Museum of Canada (today the Canadian Museum of History) to collect folksongs in Newfoundland. As the province had recently joined Confederation, the project was deemed a goodwill gesture, while at the same time adding to the Museum’s meager Anglophone archival collections. Between 1951 and 1961, over the course of six field visits, Peacock collected 766 songs and melodies from 118 singers in 38 communities, later publishing two-thirds of this material in a three-volume collection, Songs of the Newfoundland Outports (1965). As the publication consists of over 1000 pages, Outports is considered to be a bible for Newfoundland singers and a valuable resource for researchers. However, Peacock’s treatment of the material by way of tune-text collations, use of lines and stanzas from unpublished songs has always been somewhat controversial. Additionally, comparison of the field collection with Outports indicates that although Peacock acquired a range of material, his personal preferences requently guided his publishing agenda. To ensure that the songs closely correspond to what the singers presented to Peacock, the collection has been prepared by drawing on Peacock’s original music and textual notes and his original field recordings. The collection is far-ranging and eclectic in that it includes British and American broadsides, musical hall and vaudeville material alongside country and western songs, and local compositions. It also highlights the influence of popular media on the Newfoundland song tradition and contextualizes a number of locally composed songs. In this sense, it provides a key link between what Peacock actually recorded and the material he eventually published. As several of the songs have not previously appeared in the standard Newfoundland collections, The Forgotten Songs sheds new light on the extent of Peacock’s collecting. The collection includes 125 songs arranged under 113 titles along with extensive notes on the songs, and brief biographies of the 58 singers. Thanks to the Research Centre for the Study of Music Media and Place, a video of the launch event, held in St.John's, Newfoundland, is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghj6E6-QiLI&t=21s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs by the SeaIt is natural, therefore, that the sensitive spirit and delicate fancy of Mrs. Springer should be deeply moved and enkindled by both its grandeur and loveliness. Its calm soothes her as a lullaby, its mirrors rounded large, bright with the sun's glory, transfer the radiance to her soul; and torn ocean's roar, not only lifts up her imagination to hearthe voices of deep callingunto deep, but draws forth her tenderest sympathies for the human suffering and loss caused by the devouring main. Nor is it strange that one bred upon the prairies of the West, as she was, knowing the ocean only by hearsay for many years, should be prepared to yield her heart to its mighty charm. The boundless plains of her native land, whose gentle undulations resemble the long swell of the sea, their verdure almost matching its hue, their groves easily mistaken for islands that like to rich and various gems inlay the unadorned bosom of the deep, would school the eye and mind of Mrs. Springer to see and tell of things invisible to most of us, when she came to stand by the multitude of great waters through which she beholds Jehovah riding upon His horses and chariots of salvation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Now, he and his wife go on missions of mercy, occasionally by sea; and the small ketch they call “Tiare Maori” is being prepared to sail on “the wings of the dawn”. Curiously A enough, I find that as many shore people are interested in these songs as sailors. I have added a few more Songs and Shanties of course there are numbers of others, but I think this selection is fairly representative. I have been asked why The Banks of Sacramento is not inserted 3 this was nothing but an old Christy Minstrel song turned into a Shanty, and for that reason I omitted it. Questions have been asked about others, but it is impossible to use all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Sea and Lays of the Land Among the songs in this collection are the Brand New Ballads already known more or less to the public, several of them having an American newspaper circulation, while a few are given at times in public readings; since I have learned, for example, that "In Nevada" was one of the stock-pieces of Mr. Clifford Harrison. They now reappear amended and with additions. In the "Songs of the Sea" the reader will not fail to observe that three or four, such as the "Mermaid" and "Time for Us to Go," are not by me at all. They are sailors' songs of the olden time, introduced as suggestions for other lyrics, as I have indeed declared in the text, and also to aid in the main purpose or idea which inspires the whole collection - they being in this respect like stones from more ancient edifices built into new houses, as was the wont of men in the middle age.
