Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry in Southern India The Teak tree scientifically known as the Tectona grandis belongs to the natural order of Verbenaceae or Vervain order, a genus of dicotyledonous plants deriving its name from the Indian one of tekka or theka used to designate the principal species. The most important, if not the only species, is the Tectona grandis, a large tree, a native of India, the wood of which is well known by the name of Teak or Sagwc'in. It is hard, and durable, and of great use in building ships as well as for many other useful purposes, as it is very hard and of longer duration than the oak. It is often called the Indian Oak, having ashy-coloured and scaly bark with the young shoots, four-sided and grooved without stipules, large deciduous leaves measuring from twelve to twenty-four inches long, and from eight to sixteen inches broad, rough and covered with short stiff hairs above, whitish and downy beneath, panicles terminal, large cross armed divided in twos with a stemless fertile flower in each cleft or division covered with a brown mealy powder, and the stalks are deeply grooved with four prominent angles, and flowers numerous small white, the outer and inner envelopes, five to six cleft, stamens, six, ovary round hairy, four-celled cells, one seeded nut very hard. It flowers in June and July, and the seeds ripen in September and October. Dye - From the tender leaves a purple colour is extracted which is used as a dye for silk and cotton cloths. Medicinal.-the young leaves are eaten boiled with sugar in sore mouth, and the flowers prepared much in the same way in dropsy. The green fruits are compounded into an ointment and used for various skin eruptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It analyses the nature of colonial land revenue policy, commercialisation of forest resources, consequences of coffee plantations, intrusion into tribal private forests and tribal-controlled geographical regions, and disintegration of their socio-cultural, political, administrative and judicial systems during the British Raj. It explores the economic history of the region through regional and ‘non-market’ economies and addresses the issues concerning local communities. Comprehensive, systematic and rich in archival material, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers in history, especially those concerned with economic and environmental history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Indian Hills: Or, Coffee-Planting in Southern India I commend these sketches of adventurous life in a little-known corner of India with more confidence because they bring out in a simple but picturesque fashion the natural variety and woodland features of a great region, whose immense resources for forestry, plantations, and hunting are even now hardly comprehended by Indian authorities. My son, who has put these pages together from long-ago collected material of notes made in all the novelty and rough experiences of pioneering in the southern jungles of Hindostan, has, happily I think for his book, nothing to say of the beaten tracks of Indian travel; and it is for this reason, because he breaks fresh ground, and because he describes with the pleasant simplicity of letters written for home read ing strange and curious phases of jungle-life in these vast and half-explored woodlands of the Madras peninsula, that I am emboldened to express my own pleasure in reperusing his book, and glad to commend it to all who love the East and enjoy plain tales of the Asiatic hills excellently told. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of the Forest Department in India It may safely be said that there is hardly any Government Department in India Whose work and aims are so little realized by the general public as are those of the Forest Department. For one thing the work of the forest officer lies for the most part in remote places, so that few have any knowledge of it. For another the practical results of forest work are apparent only after long periods of time, so that the forest officer has to cultivate the habit of thinking in half centuries and to be content that the full effect of his labours shall be visible only to future generations. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entomology in the Doon Valley (Garhwal Region) is a unique journey into annals of the country’s most fascinating and highly entomofauna rich habitat – the Dehra Dun or the Doon Valley, tucked in the cosy climate of the foothills of the lower Himalayan region. Notwithstanding an unprecedented quantum of fragmented information available on the insects of the Doon Valley, courtesy various different long term research programmes carried out at the three major research institutions, viz., the Forest Research Institute & Colleges, the Zoological Survey of India and The Dayanand Anglo Vedic (PG) College, all located in Dehra Dun, yet no single entomological treatise detailing all the insect orders, supported by relevant local references, was ever offered to have a firsthand knowledge on the Doon Valley’s buoyant research tradition. For the first time, therefore, the present treatment comes forward to satiate a nature-lover’s desire to know completely about their own insect fauna. Besides offering an uncanny history of research, along with a string of researchers and institutions engaged in entomological research in the Doon Valley, the book describes entomologic characteristics of all the 32 Orders of Class Insecta, with emphasis on research contributions on the local and endemic fauna. To facilitate our understanding, the book offers as an example inventories of the extant taxa of a couple of orders and, still more importantly, bio-bibliographies of a few Doon Valley entomologists, as inspirational life stories for the beginners. The Book, written in a lucid language, will surely serve a good purpose for both the undergraduates, postgraduates and research scholars engaged in insect research, on one hand, and the professional entomologists not only from the Grahwal region but also across the country and beyond, on the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As they seek to explore evolving and conflicting ideas of nationhood and modernity, India's writers have often chosen forests as the dramatic setting for stories of national identity. India's Forests, Real and Imagined explores how these settings have been integral to India's sense of national consciousness. Alan Johnson demonstrates that modern writers have drawn on older Indian literary traditions of the forest as a place of exile, trial and danger to shape new ideas of India as a modern nation. The book casts new light on a wide range of modern writers, from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay – widely regarded as the first Indian novelist – to contemporary authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, and Salman Rushdie as well as local attitudes to nationhood and the environment across the country.
