This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All decision making requires information. This study provides an array of information on floristic inventory, composition, diversity, regeneration, population structure of the dominant tree species, growing stock, tree biomass, physico-chemical properties of soils and soil-vegetation interrelationship in different forest types of the moist temperate Mandal-Chopta forest in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India. Taking this biodiversity rich forest as a case study, the author has made an attempt to understand the forest dynamics of the region. This study also provides the quantitative comparisons between the results of the present study with the earlier reported values from the different parts of the Uttarakhand Himalaya. The scientific information provided in this book can be used to develop adequate strategy and action plan by the forest managers and scientists. Data is useful for predicting suitable sites for plantation silviculture of some important dominant trees of the region. Baseline data collected in the study can also be used for evaluating and monitoring the structural changes in the vegetation due to environmental or climatic changes in the future.
Book Synopsis Biodiversity of the Himalaya: Jammu and Kashmir State by : Ghulam Hassan Dar
Download or read book Biodiversity of the Himalaya: Jammu and Kashmir State written by Ghulam Hassan Dar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Himalaya, a global biodiversity hotspot, sustains about one-fifth of the humankind. Nestled within the north-western mountain ranges of the Himalaya, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) State harbours more than half of the biodiversity found in the Indian Himalaya. The wide expanse of State, spread across the subtropical Jammu, through the temperate Kashmir valley, to the cold arid Ladakh, is typical representative of the extensive elevational and topographical diversity encountered in the entire Himalaya. This book, the most comprehensive and updated synthesis ever made available on biodiversity of the J&K State, is a valuable addition to the biodiversity literature with global and regional relevance. The book, arranged into 7 parts, comprises of 42 chapters contributed by 87 researchers, each of whom is an expert in his/her own field of research. The precious baseline data contained in the book would form the foundation for assessing current status of knowledge about the bioresources, identify the knowledge gaps, and help prioritization of conservation strategies to steer the sustainable use of biodiversity in this Himalayan region. Given the breadth of topics covered under the banner of biodiversity in this book, it can surely serve as a model for documentation of biodiversity in other regions of the world. The book will be of immense value to all those who, directly or indirectly, have to deal with biodiversity, including students, teachers, researchers, naturalists, environmentalists, resource managers, planners, government agencies, NGOs and the general public at large.
Book Synopsis Plant Ecology of Indian Himalaya by : Rajendra Mohan Panda
Download or read book Plant Ecology of Indian Himalaya written by Rajendra Mohan Panda and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses plant invasions and environmental impacts on the Himalayas through a novel procedure, and helps to understand the influences of climate, physiography, soil, and disturbance on plant richness in mountain systems. Assessing invasion risks to mountain space under future climate change scenarios is highly significant for appropriate preparedness, and this book details analytical and modeling techniques to assess the conditions of mountain ecosystem and ecology to better inform our preparation for future environmental challenges. The book presents the state-of-the-art understanding of the species-environment relationships in a global biodiversity hotspot, relatively unexplored areas for the Himalayan life-form richness. The book provides not only the academic but also the professional community and policymakers a review and update on modeling applications for determining interactions of the plant species with the environment of a subtropical mountain ecosystem across a climatic gradient. Currently, there is no book in the market addressing the implementation and applications of modeling in the Himalayan plant and environment continuum, and most of the existing books cover the species richness pattern along the elevation gradient and basic ethnobotanical features of a mountain system. Since the book covers the applications of novel methods and modeling for ecological analysis of mountain ecosystems, it will also be significant for the professional market. Therefore, the book aims to fill the gap between scientists and professionals in the use of modeling strategies to monitor biodiversity in mountain systems for the formulation of conservation, adaptation, and mitigation principles.

Book Synopsis Assessments Of Plant Diversity, Biomass And Carbon Pool In Natural Forests Of Doon Valley Using Geospatial Technology by : Mohommad Shahid
Download or read book Assessments Of Plant Diversity, Biomass And Carbon Pool In Natural Forests Of Doon Valley Using Geospatial Technology written by Mohommad Shahid and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Biology - Botany, , course: Doctor of Philosophy, language: English, abstract: Forests are an important natural ‘brake’ on climate change sequester and store more carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem. The main carbon pools in forest ecosystems are the living biomass of trees and understorey vegetation and the dead mass of litter, woody debris and soil organic matter. The carbon stored in the aboveground living biomass of trees is typically the largest pool. Thus, estimating aboveground forest biomass carbon is the most critical step in quantifying carbon stocks and fluxes from forests. India is a large developing country known for its diverse forest ecosystems and is also a mega-biodiversity country. Forest ecosystems in India are critical for biodiversity, watershed protection, and livelihoods of indigenous and rural communities. The National Communication of the Government of India to the UNFCC has reported that the forest sector is a marginal source of CO2 emissions. India has formulated and implemented a number of policies and programmes aimed at forest and biodiversity conservation, afforestation and reforestation. All forest policies and programmes have implications for carbon sink and forest management. A number of studies highlighting carbon stocks of India forests at macrolevel utilizing Remote Sensing & Geographic Information System techniques have gained momentum. However, Carbon stock at micro level is still lacking and in view of this, the present study is an attempt to assess the vegetation, biomass and carbon stock of three ranges of Dehra Dun Forest Division.

Book Synopsis Ecology of Himalayan Treeline Ecotone by : S P Singh
Download or read book Ecology of Himalayan Treeline Ecotone written by S P Singh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together comprehensive multi-disciplinary knowledge on diverse aspects of the Himalayan treeline ecotone which is considered one of the most sensitive ecosystems to climate change. The contents of this book are based on the results of extensive research and provide a holistic understanding of the treeline ecotone in Himalaya. The book will serve as an important reference manual and a textbook on treeline ecology. The book is unique in the sense that it provides an engaging account of almost all the aspects of the treeline ecotone, such as taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic species diversity, temperature lapse rates, tree phenology, water relations, and stress physiology, tree ring width chronology, and climate relationships and the role of treeline ecotone in human sustenance in the Indian Himalayan region The treelines in the Himalaya, being the highest in the Northern Hemisphere (up to 4900 m), are among the least investigated systems and hence this book is timely and fills all-important knowledge gaps vis-à-vis treeline shifts, physiognomic, structural, and functional changes in mountain landscapes and ecosystems, particularly under the changing climate This book, for the first time, summarizes evidence-based knowledge about various aspects of treeline ecotone in Himalaya that was largely generated through a well-coordinated a team science approach. The book will be of interest to ecologists, climatologists, dendrochronologists, foresters, plant physiologists and resource managers and policy planners for a better understanding of the organization and dynamics of this fragile ecosystem in relation to climate change and other anthropogenic stresses that are rampant in the Himalaya. The book lays a solid foundation for further investigation of the ecology and dynamics of the treeline ecotone in the Himalayas and provides a rationale for pursuing a team science approach for macroecological investigations.
