Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of Texas Within the State of Texas the natural conditions on which depend the range and make-up of the forest are of the most diverse character. In geographical position, its southernmost point lies almost in the edge of the Tropics, while its far northern portions are within the wheat and corn belt of the Middle Western States. Its climate varies from the even warmth of the coast lowlands, tempered by the ameliorating influences of the Gulf, to the rigors and extremes of the mountainous interior, and from the heavy rainfall and moisture-laden air of the east to the arid conditions of the western desert, with its dry, burn ing winds. In relief, the State rises from the sea level by diversified terraces to high plains or feet above the Gulf, and then to rugged mountains of the continental axis, which attain an elevation of nearly feet. This vast terraced area has 'been further diversified by extensive erosion, which has carved and transported and built up again. The geological structure has resulted in the formation of soils of such divergent types as the alluvial bottomlands of the Gulf coast, the waxy loams of the prairies, and the wooded highlands and broken masses of the Plateau and Cordilleran Region. Corresponding to these differences in environment, the State presents a variety of forest types which passes from the swamp and bayou for est of east Texas, essentially the same with that of the States which border the lower Mississippi, through the great timber territory of the longleaf pine on the south, and to the north the no less extensive, though less valuable, region of the post oak, to the chaparral and mesquite of the Rio Grande Plain, and to the stunted bull pine and red fir of the summits and high canyons of the extreme west. Data on forest industries and timber drain for the calendar year of 1935 were obtained from a canvass of the wood-using plants and local wood consumers, supplemented by the lumber-production statistics compiled by the Lumber Code Authority for the National Recovery Administration. Present consumption and probable future trends in national requirements for timber and other forest products on a nation-wide basis and will be treated in a separate report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early luxury of free forage on unclaimed western public domain allowed the building of fortunes in cattle and sheep and offered opportunities to successive waves of settlement. But the western public lands could not last. The range became overgrazed, overstocked, overcrowded. Animals were lost, much range was irreversible damaged, and even violence occurred as cowmen, sheepmen, and settlers competed for the best forage. Congress intervened by designating the U.S. Forest Service as the pioneer grazing control agency. The Forest Service's controls represent not only attempts to protect a resource but also a social experiment designed to prevent the monopolization of rangelands by large outfits and to encourage small enterprises. The Forest Service has become the undisputed leader in bringing order, rationality, and economic use to the range resources under government supervision. The problems and continuing challenges of the task emerge in these pages.

Book excerpt: Famous Trees of Texas was first published in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service (now Texas A&M Forest Service), an organization created in 1915 and charged with protecting and sustaining the forests, trees, and other related natural resources of Texas. For the 100-year anniversary of TFS, the agency presents a new edition of this classic book, telling the stories of 101 trees throughout the state. Some are old friends, featured in the first edition and still alive (27 of the original 81 trees described in the first edition have died); some are newly designated, discovered as people began to recognize their age and value. All of them remain “living links” to the state’s storied past.
