Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Resource of Western Montana Changes in the economic importance of species and closer utilization with respect to tree size have both contributed to higher current estimates. Prior to World War II, timber utilization rested heavily on white pine and ponderosa pine. Other species were far less valuable. As a consequence, even the early estimates of white pine volume were very realistic and those of ponderosa pine were not much in error. In contrast, the inventory of other species was at best very rough. Today there are 61 billion board feet of Douglas-fir, western larch, Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine, and the minor species. This amounts to more than twice the volume of these species reported earlier. Improved inventory techniques have been another major development. Estimates from earlier surveys were based largely on the compilation of public and private cruises, which varied greatly ln objectives and standards. Although Forest Survey made check cruises to adjust estimates to a common standard, the total result could not be statistically evaluated for reliability. Estimates presented in this report are based on greatly improved sampling procedures that reduce the risk of bias. It is based on an intensive 4-year study and reconnaissance sampling of about 1,500 stands. A hierarchical classification of forest sites was developed using the habitat type concept. A total of 9 climax series, 64 habitat types, and 37 additional phases of habitat types are defined. A diagnostic key is provided for field identification of the types based on indicator species used in development of the classification.

However, in regions with massive mountain ranges, deep valleys and canyons, and high plateaus, precipita tion and temperatures are so variable that it is difficult to provide any meaningful climatic information for a given locality. III some localities outflows Of lava rest upon the Older rocks. In the northeast corner it also includes a low, terraced, undisturbed limestone area, which now constitutes a rolling foothill region. During Pleistocene times the uplift was covered with a great glacier, which, moving in various directions, but chiefly west and north, sculptured and fashioned the region much as we now find it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disturbance and Recovery of Trampled Montane Grassland and Forests in Montana Documenting the responses of vegetation and soil to trampling will increase our understanding of these processes and also contribute to more informed manage ment of the backcountry. Study results will improve the ability to predict the consequences of various levels of use. This capability can be used to establish use limits, to decide between dispersing or concentrating use, and to select durable locations for use. Although the results reported here are strictly applicable only to the particular vegetation and soil types that were examined, the study results should provide insights useful in other places. This paper reports the results of experiments in which various amounts of trampling were applied to six habitat types for three successive summers. Following the cessa tion of trampling, recovery was monitored for 3 additional years. Objectives of these experiments were to (1) docu ment rates of disturbance and recovery by measuring changes in vegetation cover, number of plant species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Role of Fire on the Bitterroot National Forest Presents frequencies, intensities, and influences of fire on stand structure and composition on the Bitterroot National Forest in west central Montana. Three study areas were established, each having a wide range of elevations and forest types. Findings are based upon study of nearly 900 individual fire scars on living trees, and on age classes of shade - intolerant trees attributable to fire. During the period from 1600 to 1900 fires were frequent in most habitat types, and substantial amounts of forest survived most fires. Some high-intensity stand-destroying fires were also detected in cer tain habitat types on each study area. Results show that fire was historically a major force in stand development, but that it has been of minor significance during the past 50 years, possibly because of organized fire suppression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montana Wild Life, Vol. 3: The Official Publication of the State Fish and Game Commission; August, 1930 The animals have no thermometers, said E. A. Preble, biologist of the Bio logical Survey. They may 'pant a bit in the deeps of dry forests, when the sun is overhead at noon, but they do not get excited over anything short of actual lack of food or water. However, Dr. W. Bell, director of biological investigations for the bureau, forecast a shortage of water and food for wild animals this year. Nesting birds, pitiable victims of forest fires, he said, probably were able to escape because their young were already on the wing when the drought set in. Fires in the great eastern woodlands have disturbed officials of the Forestry Service. Since January this year blazes have destroyed acres of national forests east of the Rocky Mountains, while throughout 1929 in the same area there were only 456 fires, which burned acres.
