Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Policies and Forest Management in Germany and British India The conditions which a hundred years ago in uenced the policies of the European nations namely, the necessity of looking out for continuance of domestic supplies - are at present well overcome, provided the supplies in other countries last and can readily be secured. In regard to supplies, the European countries may be grouped into those which produce as yet more than they need, namely: Russia, austria-hungary, Servia, Sweden and Norway, which are, therefore, exporters; those which produce large quantities of forest products, but not sufficient for their needs, Germany, France, Switzerland; those which depend largely or almost entirely on importation, England, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and Employment in Germany In the United States, much thought is bemg given to the relation of sustained-yield forestry to employment and the support of permanent communities. It is of interest, therefore, to know something about the way in which the forests provide rural employment and thus supple ment agriculture in countries where forestry has been widely practiced for a long time. Germany is one of those countries. There, the use of most of the land has become fairly well stabilized. More than one-fourth of the land surface is covered with forest, and a large part of the forest area has been under relatively intensive management for Well over a-hundred years. This study was undertaken for the purpose of learning the extent to which the German forests afford work opportunities, particularly for rural people. It must be recognized from the start that political and social institutions and economic conditions in Germany are very unlike those in this country. Any form of sustained-yield forest management which may be developed in this country, therefore, must spring from our own economic conditions and political and social traditions. In working out methods and policies adapted to our own conditions, however, it is helpful to know what has happened elsewhere. One fact, borne out by long experience not only in Germany but also in other countries with quite different institutions and philos Ophiss, is that managed forests do provide a large and reasonably steady volume of work, and thereby contribute immeasurably toward the existence and welfare of permanent agriculture and settled rural populations. There is every reason to suppose that the general adoption of sustained-yield forest management in this country will have similar results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Policy No-where more than in the United States is all public policy meant to be dictated by the people. For the benefit of the people and for the benefit of American forestry, a handbook might come in good stead giving the principles and the effects of a truly American forest policy. The present treatise, the contents of which are tabulated on pages 8, 9 and 10, does not pretend to fill the place of a comprehensive handbook: It is intended, primarily, for the use of the students attending the Biltmore Forest School; it forms the last part of an encyclopedic textbook of forestry (comprising silviculture, utilization, finance, mensuration and working plans) written by the author since 1898 on behalf of the Biltmore Forest Sch-001. Book excerpt: Exploring a topic of vital and ongoing importance, Traditional Forest Knowledge examines the history, current status and trends in the development and application of traditional forest knowledge by local and indigenous communities worldwide. It considers the interplay between traditional beliefs and practices and formal forest science and interrogates the often uneasy relationship between these different knowledge systems. The contents also highlight efforts to conserve and promote traditional forest management practices that balance the environmental, economic and social objectives of forest management. It places these efforts in the context of recent trends towards the devolution of forest management authority in many parts of the world. The book includes regional chapters covering North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Australia-Pacific region. As well as relating the general factors mentioned above to these specific areas, these chapters cover issues of special regional significance, such as the importance of traditional knowledge and practices for food security, economic development and cultural identity. Other chapters examine topics ranging from key policy issues to the significant programs of regional and international organisations, and from research ethics and best practices for scientific study of traditional knowledge to the adaptation of traditional forest knowledge to climate change and globalisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enlightening book brings together the work of gender and forestry specialists from various backgrounds and fields of research and action to analyse global gender conditions as related to forests. Using a variety of methods and approaches, they build on a spectrum of theoretical perspectives to bring depth and breadth to the relevant issues and address timely and under-studied themes. Focusing particularly on tropical forests, the book presents both local case studies and global comparative studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as the US and Europe. The studies range from personal histories of elderly American women’s attitudes toward conservation, to a combined qualitative / quantitative international comparative study on REDD+, to a longitudinal examination of oil palm and gender roles over time in Kalimantan. Issues are examined across scales, from the household to the nation state and the global arena; and reach back to the past to inform present and future considerations. The collection will be of relevance to academics, researchers, policy makers and advocates with different levels of familiarity with gender issues in the field of forestry.
