Book Synopsis Forest Ecosystem Classification of the Turkey Lakes Watershed, Ontario by : Gregory McIntosh Wickware
Download or read book Forest Ecosystem Classification of the Turkey Lakes Watershed, Ontario written by Gregory McIntosh Wickware and published by Environment Canada, Lands Directorate. This book was released on 1985 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the complex interactions between the incidentprecipitation and the various components of the forest ecosystem, it has been recognized that in order to understand the long-termeffects of acidic deposition on forest ecosystems it would benecessary to define these ecosystems in terms of their existingvegetation, soil, and site characteristics. This study, initiatedduring the summer of 1980 as part of the larger research program, set out to define the major forest vegetation and soil types inthe watershed, their relationship to each other and to varioussite factors.
Book Synopsis Canada's Vegetation by : Geoffrey A.J. Scott
Download or read book Canada's Vegetation written by Geoffrey A.J. Scott and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1995-01-10 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada's Vegetation includes comprehensive sections on tundra, forest-tundra, boreal forest and mixed forest transition, prairie (steppe), Cordilleran environments in western North America, temperate deciduous forests, and wetlands. An overview of each ecosystem is provided, and equivalent vegetation types throughout the world are reviewed and compared with those in Canada. The integration of data on climate, soil, and vegetation in a single volume makes this an invaluable reference tool. Canada's Vegetation is sure to become a standard textbook for those in the environmental sciences.

Book Synopsis Remote Sensing for Forest Ecosystem Characterization by : Paul Michael Treitz
Download or read book Remote Sensing for Forest Ecosystem Characterization written by Paul Michael Treitz and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1996 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote sensing and digital image analysis techniques offer potential for assisting in the analysis of large forest tracts for identification of appropriate ecosystem classes at a variety of spatial resolutions or scales. In this report, the evolution of forest ecosystem classification is discussed in relation to site and stand characteristics. The role of remote sensing for ecological and forestry applications is also reviewed along with some of the major issues in digital image classification. In addition, the issues of spatial resolution are discussed, particularly with respect to the relationship between surface features (objects and phenomena that contribute to spectral reflectance) and spatial resolution, and how this relationship affects classification accuracy.

Book Synopsis Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape by : Ajith H. Perera
Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.

Book Synopsis Acid Deposition by : James W.S. Longhurst
Download or read book Acid Deposition written by James W.S. Longhurst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of acid deposition remains one of the most urgent of our contemporary environmental problems. Research programmes are continually redefming our understanding of cause and effect and hence the continuing need for a timely and authoritative series addressing these issues. This volume seeks to review and defme our contemporary understanding of acid deposition by reference to new international data and as a consequence assist the definition of our future research requirements and policy developments. International contributions to the volume are drawn from the Federal Republic of Germany, the U.S.A., Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, Austria, Israel, France and the United Kingdom. Some of these nations have experienced acid deposition on a regional scale for considerable periods of time; for others the phenomenon is an emerging problem. This collection of papers has been compiled by invitation to eminent members of the acid deposition research community and by selection from a carefully targeted call for papers. It is primarily designed to meet the needs of researchers, lecturers and postgraduate students in environmental disciplines and for environmental policy makers. It is of interest to professionals in related disciplines and essential as a reference text for libraries. The volume is divided into four broad themes: Emissions, chemistry and deposition; Ecosystem effects (freshwater, soils and forest systems); Effects on structural materials; Mitigation, control and management. Each of these sections provides an overview of contemporary understanding, presents new experimental or field evidence and provides guidance for our future research agenda.
