Traveling from west to east across Tanzania, one encounters an incredible array of ecosystems and species. Beginning at Lakes Victoria, Tanganyika, and Nyasa that form much of the western boundary of Tanzania, one finds the most diverse and some of the most spectacular concentrations of endemic fish in any of the world's lakes. Moving further inland from the lakes, one meets the woodlands and plains of Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. The assemblages and movements of large mammals in these protected areas are unparalleled worldwide. Traveling yet further to the east, one comes to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro is of sufficient height to not only contain seven major vegetation zones, but also maintain permanent glaciers. Finally, shortly before arriving at the Indian Ocean, one encounters the Eastern Arc Mountains, a series of isolated and geologically ancient mountains, which due to their height and proximity to the Indian Ocean intercept sufficient precipitation to support, in many areas, moist tropical forest. The Eastern Arc Mountains are among the richest sites biologically in all of Africa and harbor unusually high concentrations of endemic species - species whose geographic distribution are restricted to these mountains. Unfortunately, much of Tanzania's biodiversity is threatened by habitat alteration, destruction, and exploitation. The Eastern Arc forests face some of the most severe threats to any of Tanzania's biologically unique sites.

Book excerpt: Recent developments in international policy on Reduced Emissions from Deforestation in Developing countries (REDD) open the way for crediting of carbon saved by rural communities through management of the forests in their vicinity. Since the annual changes in forest carbon stock under this kind of management are relatively small and often under the canopy, they cannot easily be assessed using remote sensing, so ground-level data collection is likely to be essential over large areas of forests. The potential role of communities in measuring, monitoring and reporting carbon stock changes in their forests has been explicitly mentioned in UNFCCC documentation on methodology for REDD+, the extended form of REDD that includes forest enhancement, sustainable forest management and forest conservation. This book presents practical methods by which communities can do it. These methods were developed and tested with communities in villages in Africa and Asia under a six-year research programme. The reliability of the data gathered by the community is shown to be equivalent to that of professional forest inventories while the costs are much lower. Involvement of local communities in collection of this data may be the most cost-effective solution for national REDD+ programmes. Moreover, it could provide the basis for a transparent system for distribution of the financial rewards from REDD+ and the carbon market. The book first presents the policy context, concepts, methods and general results, which include estimates of typical carbon savings resulting from community management in different types of tropical forests. It also looks at the governance issues that may be involved and a variety of ways in which incentive schemes might be designed to encourage communities to participate. The second half of the book is devoted to case studies from the countries involved in the research. These provide both ideas and practical experience to enable agencies to engage with local communities to monitor carbon stock changes.

This is due to the increase in wood demand for energy and for industrial raw materials. The study was conducted to assess forest condition of Sokoine University of Agriculture - Kitulangalo Forest Reserve (SUA KFR). A total of 52 nested circular plots with radii of 2, 5, 10, and 15 m were used to collect data such as diameter at breast height (DBH), height and number of regenerants. Parameters computed for data analsysis were stem per ha (N), number of regenerants, dominant tree species, exotic species, basal area per ha (G) and volume (standing and removed) per ha (V). A total of 71 tree species were identified and recorded during inventory, the average 995±256 stems/ha of different tree species of various DBH class, the average basal area per ha, G=7.961268±0.8 m2/ha and the mean standing total volume, 54.72914±11.3 m3/ha were also computed. The mean total volume removed is 0.58 m3 per ha which is very small compared to stocking. The dominant tree (richness) species includes Julbernardia globiflora (17%), Brachystegia speciformis (8%), Acacia nigrescens (7%), Acacia robusta (6%), Albizzia harveyi (5%), Scierocaryabirrea spp/ Caffra (5%) and others i.e total of all

Book excerpt: The traditional practice of shifting cultivation in many parts of Africa results in a matrix of secondary forests of varying age. The biodiversity value and carbon sequestration potential of forest in shifting cultivation systems is largely unknown. Newly developed carbon marketing mechanisms provide novel opportunities for considering fallows in the context of broad-reaching, landscape level conservation strategies. The objective of this dissertation study was to quantify the biodiversity and carbon potential of fallows, and to develop means by which to predict recovery based on landscape factors and historical and ongoing landuse. The study was conducted in South Nguru Mountain, a part of the globally recognised biodiversity rich Eastern Arc Mountains, Tanzania. Soil and vegetation surveys were conducted in 0.1 ha (20 x 50 m) plots to derive biodiversity indices and carbon stock woody biomass and soils. Along a 300 - 1600 m elevation gradient more than 120 farms and fallows at different stages of abandonment were surveyed and their cultivation and fallow histories obtained. The findings show that secondary forests in the Ngurus are rich in tree diversity and can harbour some endemics species, but that persistence of forests beyond 30 years remains a challenge. Carbon response to landscape and landuse factors was variable and complex but some general patterns were evident. Elevation was the most important gradient driving C stock in fallows; it required stratifying the landscape into lowland and submontane zones. Within these zones historical and landuse generated some predictable outcomes for C. While it is too soon to develop mechanistic models for C dynamics in the area, estimates can be made. Different sources of uncertainties in the estimates of C were identified, least of which was the need for wood specific densities for most tree species in the Eastern Arc Mountains. This study provides a useful assessment of the value of secondary forests for biodiversity conservation and carbon storage in a region that needs to explore alternative ways to meeting conservation objective in human-dominated landscapes.

In addition, for REDD+ to succeed it will need to challenge and overcome the powerful actors invested in and driving the business-as-usual model.
