Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2012 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous, , course: Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages, language: English, abstract: This research aims to find out whether there is any impact on performance when students read authentic materials beside the textbooks. Students in Bangladesh often have difficulties in learning English as a foreign language for lack of appropriate learning materials in the classroom. Too often foreign language teaching texts in our country are designed either too difficult or too easy for students. Without appropriate texts that suit them, learners spend long hours in the classroom accomplishing very little in the long run. Most of them remain weak in reading, writing, listening and speaking in English properly even after receiving higher education. Students’ performance varies according to the type of materials given to them. A significant amount of research shows that there is something about the type of textbooks/materials that should be looked into and evaluated carefully so that necessary adaptation can be made for effective learning to take place. When learners are introduced to variety of materials, it is necessary to understand what impact they have on the learners.

Presenting descriptive, theoretical, and empirical chapters as well as case studies, this Handbook, on the one hand, provides a comprehensive view of the English language teaching and learning scenario in Bangladesh, and on the other hand comes up with suggestions for possible decolonisation and de-eliticisation of English in Bangladesh. The Handbook explores a wide range of diverse endogenous and exogenous topics, all related to English language teaching and learning in Bangladesh, and acquaints readers with different perspectives, operating from the macro to the micro levels. The theoretical frameworks used are drawn from applied linguistics, education, sociology, political science, critical geography, cultural studies, psychology, and economics. The chapters examine how much generalisability the theories have for the context of Bangladesh and how the empirical data can be interpreted through different theoretical lenses. There are six sections in the Handbook covering different dynamics of English language education practices in Bangladesh, from history, policy and practice to assessment, pedagogy and identity. It is an invaluable reference source for students, researchers, and policy makers interested in English language, ELT, TESOL, and applied linguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Materials and the Roles of EFL/ESL Teachers is published amidst a decade long increase in academic publications and training courses concerned with the evaluation and design of English language teaching materials. It is timely to consider what effect the advice on offer has had on teachers' practice. Are teachers evaluating materials carefully, using textbooks in the ways expected by textbook writers, developing their own materials, and mediating between materials and learners in the ways advised in the professional literature? The book explores these issues from a variety of perspectives. The views of publishers/textbook writers, those contributing to the professional literature, and teacher educators are synthesised to establish a 'theory' of how teachers can best fulfil their roles vis-à-vis materials and learners. This is then compared with 'practice', as represented by published accounts of teachers' actual practices and learners' perspectives. The conclusion reached is that teacher education in materials evaluation and design is essential and suggestions are offered as to the form this might take. The book is intended particularly for MA students and teacher educators concerned with materials evaluation and design, but is of interest to all those concerned with the publication and use of English language teaching materials.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, Jahangirnagar University (Department of English), course: Applied Linguistics and ELT, language: English, abstract: Learner-centred instruction in a second/foreign language fosters learner autonomy, enhances metacognitive skills, and develops learners’ communicative competence, and is in consonance with the communicative language teaching approach to teaching English as a foreign language in Bangladesh. However, the current scenario of English education in the Bangladesh setting shaped by the age-old practice of the grammar-translation method and teacher-domination hardly exhibits learner-centredness. This paper then firstly tries to explicate learner autonomy, metacognition, and learner-centred second/foreign language classrooms, and secondly explores the Bangladesh context.

Book excerpt: "This book offers a thorough and comprehensive review of the lessons learnt from the award-winning 'English in Action' English language teacher development programme, which ran in government primary and secondary schools across Bangladesh from 2008 to 2017. Over the course of nine years the programme involved 51,000 teachers and 20 million school students, demonstrably raising standards of teachers' classroom practice and students' English language attainment, and won the British Council ELTON Award for Local innovation (2013) and Times Higher Education Award for International Impact (2017). The sixteen chapters explore the programme in detail, looking at both the successes and the challenges encountered throughout its course, including the strategies used to address the challenges. The key innovative factors of the programme include: a positive choice to build on the existing context, such as the lives and experiences of local teachers and the demands of a nationally determined curriculum; teacher learning taking place in the teachers' own classrooms; a focus on learning the 'how' of communicative language teaching through reflective practice and peer support; the use - within a carefully constructed pedagogy - of affordable, readily-available mobile phone technology; the use of mediated authentic video a model of teacher development at very large scale that provided a successful alternative to the 'cascade' model; a partnership with government institutions to ensure that improved practices are maintained beyond the life of the programme. This book offers a comprehensive, critical review of the lessons learnt from the English in Action (EIA) English language teacher development programme, which has run in government primary and secondary schools across Bangladesh from 2008 to 2017. It is structured in four parts. Part 1 focuses on the political, social, economic, linguistic and educational context of the Programme and provides a background for the succeeding chapters. Part 2 sets out the principles of teacher professional development (TPD) in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the detail of EIA's TPD model and materials. This includes an account of the development of mediated authentic video (MAV). Part 3 is concerned with the development, implementation and evaluation of EIA's approach to English language teaching, showing the importance accorded to developing a model best suited to its professional, practice and policy context, and of maximisin ...

Book excerpt: In the last two decades, the field of language and literature teaching has experienced considerable growth as a result of the wide array of new methodological avenues that have arisen from different angles. This paradigm shift has paved the way for the integration of newly conceived didactic resources such as the mediation of social networks for learning language or the interdisciplinarity of culturally mediated language education. It is crucial to understand this shift in order to ensure students receive the best education possible. New Approaches to the Investigation of Language Teaching and Literature presents an overview of the ongoing methodological tools, practices, research designs, and strategies used in language and literature teaching and provides education researchers and practitioners with empirically sustained evidence of teaching strategies that may be implemented in language education. Covering key topics such as language skills, adult learners, digital literacy, and learning aids, this reference work is ideal for researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners, educators, and students.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Paderborn, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The assumption that motivation and learning are directly connected to each other is supported by teachers, researchers and psychologists for a long period of time. They have pointed out that motivation can be regarded as the key issue in language learning processes, thus student motivation must be preserved, elaborated or even heightened. But how can this goal be reached by teachers or other instructors? In order to achieve this lofty mission, teachers and instructors have to make use of specific strategies for motivation. These strategies must be closely connected to the students’ lives and it has to be in the nature of these strategies to support the students in their learning process. Learning usually takes place in a classroom atmosphere, thus motivation has to be involved in this environment to guarantee learning effiency. This paper will give an overview about what different kinds of motivations are involved in the learning process and in second language learning in particular. Addionally it should give the reader an idea why motivation is so essential for learning processes. Further more it will take a critical look at what strategies for motivation teachers and other instructors can make use of in order to provide a successful learning environment. In the end it should be obvious how far the teacher can positively influence language learning processes, in particular second language acquisition processes.
