Book excerpt: In 1986, Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) put into effect it's New Economic Mechanism (NEM) in its bid for modernization and development. With this national policy came the conversion of a predominantly agricultural and subsistence-based economy into one focused on commodity-driven production. The country's integration into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its signing of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) made official its integration into the regional and internationnal economy. The once state-planned, socialist economy was restructured into an open, liberalized one. One sector that has experienced marked growth is manufacturing, specifically the garment industry, Domestic and foregin-owned garment factories established beginning in the earyl 1990s now have Laos exporting 80% of its garment products to European Union (EU) nations.

Book Synopsis China's Rise In Mainland Asean: Regional Evidence And Local Responses by : Suthiphand Chirathivat
Download or read book China's Rise In Mainland Asean: Regional Evidence And Local Responses written by Suthiphand Chirathivat and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's rapid rise and expansion of China's influence all around the world and in ASEAN during the past two decades, there has been an increasing awareness of various countries and regions adjusting themselves to the new trends, both in terms of opportunities and risks alike. This has become necessary due to the rapid changes in many aspects — political landscapes, economic issues, as well as social and cultural considerations. This book, China's Rise in Mainland ASEAN: Regional Evidence and Local Responses, provides timely insights on some of the latest issues pertaining to ASEAN and China, rapidly shifting interactions and upcoming geostrategic challenges.ASEAN can be said to be undergoing a new era, with China becoming more intertwined and involved with the ASEAN region than ever before. The complexity of the regional dynamics means that this phenomenon cannot be captured with a single narrative or discipline of study. In addressing the matters at hand, this book sets out to examine and provide deeper understandings on the regional implications, and local responses from ASEAN countries, and from the perspective of the region as a whole. The underlying rationale is that adequate understanding on the matters involved in this new ASEAN-China era will help to encourage better and mutually beneficial relationships between both sides. The analysis of this book will be categorized into four main themes — (1) 'The Big Picture', concerning China's policies, strategies, and diplomatic stances, (2) 'Implications and Responses', dealing with how ASEAN members react and respond to China's actions and regional influence, (3) 'Perspectives on Trade, Investment and External Debt', which handles the economic facets of the ASEAN-China interactions, and (4) 'Connectivity in Focus', addressing various emerging and existing dimensions of connectivity expansion between ASEAN and China, both physical and virtual.

As global capital markets have opened up, and these economies have developed their technological and commercial capabilities, in more recent years Southeast Asia has emerged as a significant source of outward FDI both within the region and beyond. This important volume, by a group of leading regional scholars, offers a timely, comprehensive, accessible and authoritative analysis of this phenomenon.” -- Hal Hill, H.W. Arndt Professor of Southeast Asian Economies, Arndt-Corden Department of Economics, Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University “A timely, rich and comprehensive study filling a major gap in the literature on the increasingly important phenomenon of foreign investment flowing out from regions including developing and middle-income countries.” -- Luke Nottage, Professor of Comparative and Transnational Business Law; Associate Director, Centre for Asian and Pacific Law at the University of Sydney

Book Synopsis Handbook on Small Nations in the Global Economy by : D. van den Bulcke
Download or read book Handbook on Small Nations in the Global Economy written by D. van den Bulcke and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These studies of the international competitiveness of small open economies demonstrate the critical importance of foreign direct investment as an engine of economic development: multinational enterprises are the key drivers of international competitiveness. Alan M. Rugman, University of Reading, UK Globalization has made every country small . The global economic crisis has made sure that every country has increasingly realised that it is open and vulnerable as well. This volume is both timely and relevant. Small country studies should become mainstream for scholars in business, economics and politics! Rob van Tulder, RSM Erasmus University, the Netherlands This book provides a fresh and clear-eyed view of the relationship between multinationals and location advantages of countries. It is one of the first attempts to build a constructive bridge between the theory of international business and the outstanding contribution of Michael Porter about the drivers of competitiveness. The authors address crucial issues demanding the attention of teachers, researchers, practitioners and political leaders. Philippe Gugler, University of Fribourg, Switzerland This unique, extensive Handbook illustrates that multinational enterprises can contribute substantially to the competitive advantage of small countries. It advances the notion that small nations increasingly need to rely on both home-grown and foreign multinational enterprises to achieve domestic economic success in industries characterized by international competition. The expert contributors explore the roles of firms in a range of small, successful open economies driven by such multinational enterprises across the globe. They juxtapose country data sets against Professor Michael Porter s paradigm of single diamond components and show that these single diamond components reflect merely a set of initial conditions, which can be improved upon through both inward and outward direct investment. Concluding that multinational enterprises create resource linkages between the home and host environments in which they operate, this Handbook proves to be a fascinating read for academics, students and researchers with an interest in business and management, economics and international economics.
