Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of technology transfer for the competitive advantage of companies and the economic success of nations cannot be overstated. Technology is a determining element for firms and nations to increase productivity, to compete, and to prosper. In The Competitive Advantage of Regions and Nations, the authors stress that companies, investment promotion agencies, and government bodies cannot simply sit and wait until new technologies arrive in their domain. Rather, they need to manage the identification, assessment, attraction, absorption and application of new technologies. In this comprehensive book, Boris Ricken and George Malcotsis explain how technology transfer in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects can be systematically managed. Using some 40 case studies as illustration, they give step-by-step guidance for managers. The explanation of theory in this book, together with the frameworks and cases delivering solutions to the various challenges of technology transfer will be highly appreciated by managers of companies, investment promotion agencies, and government bodies alike. It also offers students confronted with the topic an understandable study guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role does trade play in international technology transfer? Do technologies introduced by multinational firms diffuse to local firms? What kinds of policies have proved successful in encouraging technology absorption from abroad and why? Using these questions as motivation, this article surveys the recent trade literature on international technology transfer, paying particular attention to the role of foreign direct investment. The literature argues that trade necessarily encourages growth only if knowledge spillovers are international in scope. Empirical evidence on the scope of knowledge spillovers (national versus international) is ambiguous. Several recent empirical plant-level studies have questioned earlier studies that argued that foreign direct investment has a positive impact on the productivity of local firms. Yet at the aggregate level, evidence supports the view that foreign direct investment has a positive effect on economic growth in the host country.

Book excerpt: In this book, Nagesh Kumar and expert contributors examine and explain the emerging patterns in international technology transfers and foreign direct investment flows (FDIs) over the past two decades. They analyse the trends in internationalization of corporate activity in individual source countries, discussing outflows from both major and emerging source countries. This departs from the existing treatments of FDI as homogenous resource and allows for a more detailed prediction of future outflow patterns. Throughout, the research focuses upon the implications of new trends for developing countries. Kumar concludes by outlining the policy implications for the governments of such countries seeking to mobilize technology and FDI for their industrialization and further integration into the international community. Controversially, he cautions against excessive optimism about the potential of FDI inflows as an agent of development. This book draws together much data and information which is not readily available and provides reflections upon international business negotiations from a developing country's perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Vietnam's economy moves further along the path of development, this book presents urgent lessons for policymakers from the country's first decade of experience of FDI. A mere decade after the start of its reforms towards a market-oriented economy, a World Bank report named Vietnam the second largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI). Drawing on a wealth of hitherto unpublished data and qualitative analysis, this work critically examines the overall impact of FDI on Vietnams economy, as well as the performance of individual projects. A major finding is that government policy and intervention have been important in channelling foreign investment flows towards national and regional development goals. This book is also a significant addition to the debates on FDI-induced effects such as technology transfer and employment creation in developing countries. It will be of great interest to all those researching or involved in policymaking in transitional economies in particular.

Book excerpt: This book is a state-of-the-art discussion of what has succeeded (and failed) in the design and implementation of projects and institutions to assist the poor in developing country economies. In Africa especially, far too many people are still living under conditions of extreme poverty. The goal of the book is twofold: (1) to identify and assess the key processes through which markets affect the livelihoods of the rural poor; and (2) to propose micro- and macro-level policies and innovations to address the problems of inclusion that arise. Featuring contributions from leading scholars and professionals in the field, this volume is timely to all those involved in designing innovative institutions that transfer capital and technologies to low-income countries facing the challenges of poverty alleviation and economic development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, foreign direct investment began to swamp all other cross-border capital flows into developing countries. Does foreign direct investment support sound development? In particular, does it contribute to poverty reduction?Foreign direct investment is a key ingredient of successful economic growth and development in developing countries - partly because the very essence of economic development is the rapid and efficient transfer and cross-border adoption of quot;best practices.quot; Foreign direct investment is especially well suited to effecting this transfer and translating it into broad-based growth, not least by upgrading human capital.Growth is the single most important factor in poverty reduction, so foreign direct investment is also central to achieving that important World Bank goal. Government-led programs that improve social safety nets and explicitly redistribute assets and income might direct more of the fruits of growth to the poor. But these are complements - not alternatives - to sensible growth-oriented policies. And growth is needed to fund these government-led programs. Moreover, the delivery of social services to the poor - from insurance schemes to such basic services as water and energy - can clearly benefit from reliance on foreign investors. In short, foreign direct investment remains one of the most effective tools in the fight against poverty. This paper - a product of the Private Sector Advisory Services Department - is part of a larger effort in the department to analyze the role of private sector development in poverty reduction.
