Wie kann man es wenigstens schrittweise erreichen? Solche Fragen lagen der Einrichtung des Modellprogramms FÖRMIG – Förderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund – zugrunde, das 2004 offiziell aus der Taufe gehoben wurde. Es endete 2009 nach fünfjähriger Laufzeit. Zehn Bundesländer sowie (bis 2006) das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung waren daran beteiligt. Im Zentrum des Programms stand der Anspruch, eine förderliche Sprachbildung zu gestalten – eine Sprachbildung, von der Schülerinnen und Schüler auch beim fachlichen Lernen profitieren. Durch FÖRMIG wurde die bildungspolitische und bildungspraktische Öffentlichkeit auf die grundlegende Bedeutung einer „durchgängigen Sprachbildung“ aufmerksam gemacht, die sich vor allem, aber keineswegs nur auf Kinder und Jugendliche mit Migrationshintergrund richtet. „Durchgängige Sprachbildung“ kann allen Kindern und Jugendlichen, die in der Familie nicht intensiv auf die sprachlichen Anforderungen des Schulsystems vorbereitet werden, bessere Voraussetzungen für eine erfolgreiche Bildungskarriere verschaffen. Zur Bezeichnung dieser spezifischen sprachlichen Anforderungen wurde für und von FÖRMIG der Begriff „Bildungssprache“ neu definiert und mit Inhalt gefüllt. In diesem Band wird vorgestellt, was im Modellprogramm erreicht wurde. Dazu gehören Erläuterungen zum Begriff „Bildungssprache“ ebenso wie Berichte über die Erfahrungen mit der Praxis eines bildungssprachförderlichen Unterrichts und seiner Rahmenbedingungen. Und dazu gehört schließlich eine Bilanz der Feldforschung, die zur Evaluation des Modellprogramms durchgeführt wurde.
