This book was released on 1975 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive wind tunnel investigation was conducted at Mach number 10 on 4- and 5-deg half-angle cones in order to study ablation and viscous effects under laminar flow conditions. Attention was focused on (1) the mode of ablation simulation, (2) obtaining consistent pitch plane force measurements in the angle-of-attack range from 0 to 4 deg, (3) the effect of bluntness, and (4) viscous effects over as large a Reynolds number range as possible. The subliming ablator used was camphor, which is compared to blowing through a porous surface using (1) nitrogen, (2) argon, and (3) sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gases.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engineering tool is described for calculating pressures and loads at high-speed water entry which is simple to use, inexpensive to exercise and applicable to a wide variety of geometries. A simplified potential model is used which replaces the water's free surface with an effective planar surface that is positioned using an empirical parameter available in the literature for a wide variety of shapes. To confirm predictions, calculations are compared to experiment for the oblique water entry of spheres, cones, disks, and cusps. Surface pressures agree well with measurement reflecting both the model geometry and location on the model. The calculated drag and lift exhibit close agreement with experimental values, particularly prior to the peak loads. At later times the shape of the hydraulic cavity must be taken into account and an approximate procedure for doing this is described. A computer code listing and sample computer runs are provided as well as instructions for using the code.

Book excerpt: Humankind has grappled for millennia with the fundamental questions of the origin and end of the universe--it was a focus of ancient religions and myths and of the inquiries of Aristotle, Galileo, Copernicus, Kepler, and Newton. Today we are at the brink of discoveries that should soon reveal the deepest secrets of the universe. Alpha and Omega is a dispatch from the front lines of the cosmological revolution that is being waged at observatories and laboratories around the world-in Europe, in America, and even in Antarctica--where scientists are actually peering into both the cradle of the universe and its grave. Scientists--including galaxy hunters and microwave eavesdroppers, gravity theorists and atom smashers, all of whom are on the trail of dark matter, dark energy, and the growing inhabitants of the particle zoo-now know how the universe will end and are on the brink of understanding its beginning. Their findings will be among the greatest triumphs of science, even towering above the deciphering of the human genome. This is the book you need to help understand the frequent front-page headlines heralding dramatic cosmological discoveries. It makes cutting-edge science both crystal clear and wonderfully exciting.

Book excerpt: The Maastricht Law Faculty is known for its outstanding expertise in the field of European and comparative law, and it attaches great importance to comparative legal studies in its teaching. National, European, and international legal provisions, which have proven to be particularly relevant in comparative legal studies, assists students, academics, and practitioners in their comparative law work. This expanded and updated second edition of the Maastricht Collection covers the areas of: constitutional law * administrative law and administrative procedure * criminal justice * European and international human rights law * property law * tort law * national and European contract law * civil procedure * private international law * company law * international business law * international tax law. For each area, a selection of important legal provisions - from France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK - is provided. This includes domestic constitutional and statutory provisions, provisions from international treaties, and instruments of the EU. In addition, selected sources from the US are provided. Sources are reproduced in the original English or are rendered as fresh English translations under critical editorship. Unlike many other translations, The Maastricht Collection remains true to the content, style, and syntax of the original texts. This allows the reader to appreciate, not only the substance, but also the authentic form - and the beauty - of foreign legal sources.
