To bring the ancient messages of the Bible into today's world, each passage is treated in three sections: Original Meaning. Concise exegesis to help readers understand the original meaning of the biblical text in its historical, literary, and cultural context. Bridging Contexts. A bridge between the world of the Bible and the world of today, built by discerning what is timeless in the timely pages of the Bible. Contemporary Significance. This section identifies comparable situations to those faced in the Bible and explores relevant application of the biblical messages. The author alerts the readers of problems they may encounter when seeking to apply the passage and helps them think through the issues involved. This unique, award-winning commentary is the ideal resource for today's preachers, teachers, and serious students of the Bible, giving them the tools, ideas, and insights they need to communicate God's Word with the same powerful impact it had when it was first written.

Book excerpt: John was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands in 1930. He suffered starvation during Nazi occupation of Holland during World War II. His father was imprisoned by the Nazi's for six weeks for supplying the ten Boom family with ration cards, though they never found this out. John felt the call to ministry, went to Bible School in Brussels, Belgium, and met and married his wife there. They both felt a strong call to the mission field then Dutch New Guinea (later Irian Jaya - Indonesia) and left for the mission field (with The Christian & Missionary Alliance) (we went out under the US mission) shortly after their marriage. They would spend the next thirty-eight years on the mission field there before retiring to Toccoa, GA in 1995. The Lord blessed them with four children and 17 grandchildren! During his time on the mission field, John started, taught, and ran a Bible School in Irian Jaya.

Book excerpt: It would be such a waste of time if we read the book and do not move on to a next level of followship. The journey of faith should become a cycle of faith with new levels of commitment that will be required as we start higher and deeper levels of the process time and again. Moving from discipleship to apostleship on the journey of faith will require that we sit down and count the cost once again, but this time on a higher level. Let us consider the words of A. J. Nock: The mind is like the stomach. It is not how much you put into it that counts, but how much it digests. So let us digest, act, and do.

Book excerpt: Before offering a prayer at the inauguration of President George W. Bush, Franklin Graham was asked by a fellow participant if he intended to pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Graham assured him that he would and encouraged this pastor to do the same. As Graham reminded him, "That's the only thing we've got." In days of religious confusion and cultural relativism, Franklin Graham reminds us that there are absolutes in the kingdom of God. The Name explains the significance of names in the Hebrew culture, centering on the meaningfulness of the name Jesus. Chapters focus on the different aspects of power in the Lord's name, such as "Healing in the Name" and "Salvation in the Name."

Book excerpt: Jesus explains in His parable of the talents that your Heavenly Father God has endowed you with at least one special gift. Often He has blessed you with many more. His gift of love to you, however, is the most precious of them all. If godly love is your one talent, it is yours to continually refine throughout your life. In order to continually grow in godly love, God's Word must be your road map. God Loves You: Notes of His Love unearths truths about your Heavenly Father's love from Paul's description of godly love in his first letter to the Corinthians. In his letter he reveals its seven qualities. You will find in God Loves You: Notes of His Love that each chapter is dedicated to studying a quality of love. As you study each chapter you become a student of God's love. You investigate for yourself how to live an entire life of continual growth in ever-abounding love for your Heavenly Father God, your dear ones, and all humanity. After you devote your entire life to successfully studying and living godly love, you will appear before your Heavenly Father God. When He sees your soul beaming the seven qualities of godly love, He will tell you "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your Master's happiness!"

Book excerpt: Invade, Conquer, Occupy! A close look at the church today might leave the average observer with more questions than answers, but for those who see with the eyes of faith, God is raising an army with whom He will advance His Kingdom in unprecedented ways. A good proportion of the Body are no longer content with business as usual, and are beginning to seek the reality that God’s Word presents. Many of these hungry souls are young people who were born in church, and their quest for reality has driven them in diverse directions, much to their own hurt. However, God acknowledges the hunger of their hearts and seeks to gather them into an army of young invaders that would advance Light in the midst of darkness and present to the world a Kingdom that is set to override all. From the commissioning of the church in the Book of Acts, it has always been clear that God has a frontline role for young people in the advancement of His Kingdom in this end-time. “‘And it shall come to pass in the last days,’ saith God, ‘I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams’” (Acts 2:17). The first group of people God singled out that would walk in the manifestations of the outpouring of His Spirit are “your sons and daughters”. God is out to enlist young boys and girls—teenagers and youths—for an end-time showdown that would never leave the church and the world the same. This course is a training to bring young hearts into battle formation for Kingdom takeover. This is not a nice regular Sunday school manual but a battle school curriculum to help raise an invading army of teenagers and youths who would escape the distractions of their time and engage in intentional Kingdom advancement with one clear goal in mind: Invade, Conquer, Occupy!

Book excerpt: The Red Letter Revolution is about a global movement of Christians who are taking the actions of Jesus and his exact words—the “red letters” in some versions of the Bible—seriously. Colin challenges his readers to join this movement by responding to the poverty, racism, economic disparity, violence, classism, sexism and all other forms of injustice and oppression all around us like Jesus did. Through biblical exposition, rousing stories and practical application, Colin demonstrates that we can follow the radical words of Jesus only with the love of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. This book draws our allegiance to the mission of Christ to the poor and oppressed and calls for us to act. It will truly challenge the way we view others and how we should respond to the oppression and injustice present in our world.

His conclusions, often startling, illuminate the Gospel clearly. Instead of verbosity, he expresses much in few words. Dr. Thomas is practical and provides excellent stimulus for sermon preparation. His powerful, yet restrained imagination, presses into its service all nature, life, science, art and history. After thoroughly grasping his theme, he pours his soul into it, develops it in a logical manner, and enunciates his 123 discourses with thrilling effect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 2Cor.10:3-4 Today, the church has neglected to teach about the spiritual realm, for fear of being judged archaic. It has denied a key Scriptural truth: that the whole world is under the control of Satan. The church has forgotten that angels were created to serve Gods people. It has also rejected the authority Christians have as ambassadors of Christ. Finally, the church has sacrificed its power to impact the world in order to gain credibility with the world. People have chosen the religion of science. Consequently, if science and Scripture disagree, even people within the church believe science to be the truth. There are three main pillars in science: observable, repeatable, and irrefutable. Any scientific fact must fulfill these pillars to be presumed true. Since the spiritual realm is invisible and not observable, science deems that this realm does not exist. When the spiritual realm manifests itself in an event, science excuses the anomaly to be something they have yet to understand. The Scriptures teach that Christians have overcome sin, Satan, and the world. Through the Holy Spirit, we can discern both the spiritual realms presence and its activities. We are not called to be demon-slayers, but we are called to engage the enemy in order to bring freedom and wholeness to people. The Bible teaches that a war exists between Satans kingdom and Gods kingdom. Every war has Rules of Engagement. The purpose of this book is to identify the spiritual realm, recognize its methods of operation, and ultimately learn the rules that enable us to effectively engage our enemy Satan.

Book excerpt: Much of what has been portrayed concerning John the Baptist and his message of repentance is that he was a wild man, a loose canon who lived in caves, never combed his hair or brushed his teeth, and would yell at the top of his lungs, 'Repent, you sinners!' In A Thunderous Voice, author Chris Martin uncovers the truth about John and discusses how John's message of repentance is different from warnings of hellfire and brimstone preached on street corners and even some pulpits around the world. Repentance is a gift that God has granted us for the forgiveness of sins and is not some type of guilt-ridden, man-made condemnation. A Thunderous Voice is an insightful look into the reality that repentance goes hand in hand with a heart attitude, an action, and a blessing from God. Understanding true repentance will ultimately change the way believers think about and respond to God's grace and mercy so that we can all walk in the freedom that Christ purchased on the cross for his children. This new and profound truth will empower anyone searching for hope and reconciliation, enriching the lives of those who desire to shout with A Thunderous Voice to God.

This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work argues that the author of the Gospel of Matthew structures his work as a Bios or biography of Jesus, so as to encapsulate, in narrative form, the essence of his theological understanding of God's Basileia (sovereign rule), as proclaimed and taught in the teaching and healing mission of Jesus. Evidence for this is found in Matthew's careful use of structural markers to divide his story of Jesus into significant thematic sub-sections in which he uses a series of Basileia logia at incisive points to highlight aspects of Jesus' teaching and healing mission. In this way, Matthew is able to portray Jesus, as God's promised Messiah, who instructs his disciples through discourse and narrative, hence in word and example, in the nature and demands of God's sovereign rule. By structuring his Gospel as a story, Matthew depicts Jesus giving instructions to his disciples and also instructs the readers of the text. Hence, Matthew's Gospel becomes a manual of instruction on the nature and demands of God's sovereignty. Its purpose is to ensure that not only the members of the Matthean community, but all future disciples of Jesus are competently trained to carry out Jesus' commission: "Go therefore and disciple all the nations ..." (28:19-20). In this way, the goods news of God's saving presence is proclaimed to all the nations until God's eschatological reign is finally established. LNTS 308
