Book excerpt: Beginning with the argument that the Emancipation Proclamation did not actually free African American slaves, this dissenting view of Lincoln's greatness surveys the president's policies, speeches, and private utterances and concludes that he had little real interest in abolition. Pointing to Lincoln's support for the fugitive slave laws, his friendship with slave-owning senator Henry Clay, and conversations in which he entertained the idea of deporting slaves in order to create an all-white nation, the book, concludes that the president was a racist at heart--and that the tragedies of Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era were the legacy of his shallow moral vision.

Book Synopsis THE "UNCONSCIOUS" TRILOGY: The Interpretation of Dreams, Psychopathology of Everyday Life & Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious by : Sigmund Freud
Download or read book THE "UNCONSCIOUS" TRILOGY: The Interpretation of Dreams, Psychopathology of Everyday Life & Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious written by Sigmund Freud and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-12 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Interpretation of Dreams is a book in which Freud introduces his theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation, and also first discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex, and it is widely considered one of his most important works. Dreams, in Freud's view, are all forms of wish fulfillment"— attempts by the unconscious to resolve a conflict of some sort, whether something recent or something from the recesses of the past. Psychopathology of Everyday Life is a work based on Freud's researches into slips and parapraxes from 1897 onwards, one which became perhaps the best-known of all his writings. Sometimes called the Mistake Book, the work became one of the scientific classics of the 20th century. Through its stress on what Freud called "switch words" and "verbal bridges", it is considered important for psychopathology. Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious is a book on the psychoanalysis of jokes and humor. In this work, Freud described the psychological processes and techniques of jokes, which he likened as similar to the processes and techniques of dream-work and the Unconscious. Freud claims that our enjoyment of the joke indicates what is being repressed in more serious talk. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the father of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. In creating psychoanalysis, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process.
Book Synopsis Forest Dreams, Forest Nightmares by : Nancy Langston
Download or read book Forest Dreams, Forest Nightmares written by Nancy Langston and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2009-11-23 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the inland West, forests that once seemed like paradise have turned into an ecological nightmare. Fires, insect epidemics, and disease now threaten millions of acres of once-bountiful forests. Yet no one can agree what went wrong. Was it too much management—or not enough—that forced the forests of the inland West to the verge of collapse? Is the solution more logging, or no logging at all? In this gripping work of scientific and historical detection, Nancy Langston unravels the disturbing history of what went wrong with the western forests, despite the best intentions of those involved. Focusing on the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington, she explores how the complex landscapes that so impressed settlers in the nineteenth century became an ecological disaster in the late twentieth. Federal foresters, intent on using their scientific training to stop exploitation and waste, suppressed light fires in the ponderosa pinelands. Hoping to save the forests, they could not foresee that their policies would instead destroy what they loved. When light fires were kept out, a series of ecological changes began. Firs grew thickly in forests once dominated by ponderosa pines, and when droughts hit, those firs succumbed to insects, diseases, and eventually catastrophic fires. Nancy Langston combines remarkable skills as both scientist and writer of history to tell this story. Her ability to understand and bring to life the complex biological processes of the forest is matched by her grasp of the human forces at work—from Indians, white settlers, missionaries, fur trappers, cattle ranchers, sheep herders, and railroad builders to timber industry and federal forestry managers. The book will be of interest to a wide audience of environmentalists, historians, ecologists, foresters, ranchers, and loggers—and all people who want to understand the changing lands of the West.
Book Synopsis The Force Is With Us by : Thomas Walker
Download or read book The Force Is With Us written by Thomas Walker and published by Quest Books. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by encounters with his son from beyond the grave, Tom Walker went searching for answers. He discovered that paranormal phenomena have not only been exhaustively studied, but that scientific evidence exists to support it. He uncovered numerous scientific studies involving telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis, as well as government-funded scientists who proved their validity. Through his research, Walker eventually came to the belief that there is a force in the world that makes things happen. The force, an energy field that permeates the universe, forms and sustains all things, and is the basis behind paranormal phenomena and alternative forms of healing. He describes his provocative conclusions in this book. Making compelling connections between ideas like the Great Void and “dark matter,” between Ch’i and quantum fields, Walker argues that it is our connection with the higher planes of consciousness — the fundamental quantum reality— that truly makes up the world.
Book Synopsis This Brilliant Darkness by : Red Tash
Download or read book This Brilliant Darkness written by Red Tash and published by Flying Birdbath Books. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brooding monster. A quirky professor. A small Indiana town with a soul of its own. Imagine if the writers of Northern Exposure sat down with Stephen King and decided to craft a dark fantasy thriller starring absent-minded academians, everyday goofballs, and a dark fantasy creature for good measure. Pondering big picture questions like "Why am I here?" and "Does Love Conquer All?" has never been so fun. That's THIS BRILLIANT DARKNESS, the top-rated dark fantasy debut novel by the author of TROLL OR DERBY, Red Tash. Nothing is as it seems to be, and no one behaves in ways characters are "supposed" to act. How will it end? It's anyone's guess, in a book that keeps you turning pages, racing to find out what will happen next. Christine Grace finds her predictable scholarly life comforting, if a bit boring. Her live-in boyfriend presses her for marriage, but she's too philosophically inclined to take an interest. So, really, why does she suddenly start imagining things in the window's reflection? Is time truly starting and stopping all around her, or is she inexplicably cracking up? Greachin is an age-old being so tortured by his own karmic cycle that he no longer knows how to connect, except to identify potential threats through the cosmic ripples of space. When he zeroes in on Christine Grace, he experiences second thoughts for the first time in millenia. Will he go through with his grisly plan of murder and destruction? And what of these other characters--an aging physicist of ill-repute, a stubborn monk who takes his vow of silence too far, and a time-shifting star visible only from Bloomington? What a tangled web we weave, when monsters practice to deceive. Dive into This Brilliant Darkness, and follow the journeys of these characters, from Britain to the Heartland, from January's snowfall to Halloween's costumed festivities. THIS BRILLIANT DARKNESS is a smart, karmic mystery populated by lovable brainy characters. Climb on, strap in, and hold tight. Readers are saying: "This is a fast-paced, exciting book that keeps you guessing until the very end. With an eclectic cast of characters, time travel and a karmic mystery, how can you go wrong?" ~Zombie Bedtime Stories author Thea Gregory "By midnight, I had not put the book down, and had no intention of putting it down. At 12:15am, my fourteen-year-old son stumbled out to get a drink of water. "You're still up?" he asked. "Go to bed." I looked up from my Nook, smiled, and said, "Not on your life, dude. Not until this ends." ~Librarian Amy Marshall "The way the author weaves fantasy, humor, science fiction, and mystery is, for lack of a better word, brilliant. I read the entire thing with admiration/envy, taking notes and thinking 'THIS is how you write a novel.' Remember when Scream blew the horror world away by actually using technology in a realistic way? Well here's blogging and online forums and long distance cyber friendships, honestly depicting the way we live in the 21st century." ~Poet Christina Grey AN OFFICIAL JAMES MASON COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB MUST READ "The atmosphere of this book, so hard to simply label horror or paranormal...how about simply...A GREAT READ, is the true star. Ms. Tash so finely weaves a path of intrigue, terror, humor and suspense, that the reader is taken with each character, so very finely drawn. THIS BRILLIANT DARKNESS is that rare book that one truly does not want to end!! When it does...next question is 'What else by Red Tash can I get my hands on? QUICK!!!'"~ Rick Friedman

With prophetic dreams and visions, Evangelist always knew she was set apart. But with a high calling there is always a high price to pay. Today, Evangelist Watson is a seasoned woman of God full of wisdom and power. She is also a loving wife and mother of four beautiful, talented and anointed children, and she is also the spiritual mother of many more. She is active in many areas of ministry and has the honor of being a major asset to ministries of others as well as her own, giving her the platform to impart her wisdom, knowledge, and anointing into the lives of countless souls. First and foremost, before all ministries, she is a humble servant, willing to put her hands to whatever God has called her to do (including cleaning toilets and mopping). Evangelist was licensed at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor Henry L. Bonner. She is also the newly published author of this book, "I Still Hear Footsteps," and Ghetto Byrds, and is the founder of "Heirs to the Promise Book Club." She takes pride in being a positive example and a beacon of light for those who have either lost their way, or are trying to find their way tothe One True and Living God. Evangelist is a true Woman of God who preaches and lives in the realm of righteousness. Her philosophy on ministry which remains so true even in her own Christian walk can be summed up in one of her life quotes: "The one thing I honestly believe is that you can't impact unless you've been impacted, you can't lead unless you've followed, and you can't impart unless you've lived."
Download or read book Soul Force written by Paul Olsen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us at one time or another feel fragmented—cut of and powerless. In this important work, psychotherapist Paul Olsen tells us that what we are really experiencing is a loss of connection with our soul: “the energy inside us that connects us to ourselves, to others, to everything that exists—the inner energy that propels life.” You cannot ‘think’ your way out of an emotional dilemma, Dr. Olsen warns. Thinking, in fact, is the enemy, the disconnecter, of the soul. So is science the enemy. So is education; so are almost all the rules of living we learn as children and take for granted as adults. In Soul Force Dr. Olsen offers exploration exercises that help you discover yourself: Whether your method of dealing with stress deepens the trap in which you find yourself How to learn reflexive decision-making How to reconnect with your natural ‘flow’ so that your inner power will be felt by everyone you meet How to disengage from arguments and win them What your worst enemy can teach you about yourself
