Book excerpt: Excerpt from For the Children's Hour In nearly every case it has been found necessary to adapt the stories to the immediate use of the story teller, whether kindergartner or mother. They have been shortened, and only such salient facts retained as will result in clear mental concepts, and make the stories easily told without undue taxing of the child's attention. A large place has been given to the fanciful tale, which has a direct educational value in the training of the imagination; and the accumulative repetition story, which develops the child's sense of humor, and appeals to his instinctive love of rhyme and jingle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Hour: A Magazine for the Little Ones, May, 1874 N o wonder Rosy looked 'at the empty cup with tears in her eyes, for coffee, was something she didn't have every day, i and her mother had sweetened this so nicely, and put such nice yellow cream in it, and there wasn't any more, she was' sure; and, oh dear! She couldn't help sob bing outright, thinking what a treat she'd missed. Mrs. Ray pitied Jber distress, though of course it was a trial to have her tablecloth stained, and she would have felt like scolding if it hadn't been an accident. The last drop had been drained out of the coffee-pot, or she would have given her little girl another cup. All she could do was to promise Rosy one the' next morning, and like a wise, thoughtful mother try and divert her. 5 For Mrs. Ray knew these little griefs are as keenly felt by children as graver enes by their elders. 'do you know* where coffee comes from, Rosy dear? Said she, softly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kindergarten Children's Hour, Vol. 2 of 5 Let song and laughter enter into every occupation, whether it be a task or a game. Count it a privilege to live with the children, to play with them, and to see things from their point of view. Make all kinds of work seem to be play, because of the enjoyment that enters into it. This book will have accomplished its purpose if, through its suggestions, it enables you to fill the waking hours of your children with beneficial occupations, for to a child the world is a big place and his ideas are be wildered when he is left entirely to himself. The direction you will thus be enabled to give to the children's play will in a large measure determine the ideals that are to influence their later lives, at the same time helping them to meet their problems and to perform their tasks with confidence and self-reliance. Stories From Seven Old Favorites by Eva March Tappan TO THE CHILDREN This volume is made up of stories from seven famous books. These books are as different as they can possibly be; and yet there are not many boys and girls who do not like every one of them. The chief reason for this is because they seem so true, so much more "real" than most other stories. When you read about Tom Thumb, for instance, you do not really believe that there ever was a little boy no bigger than his mother's thumb; at least, you do not believe it in the same way that you believe the sun shines or the wind blows; but when you read "Robinson Crusoe," you feel as if every word of it must be true. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Though the stories and songs for the book were not then completed, we used the general outline of the work with pleasure and success. The idea of God's love and care, followed throughout the seasons, illustrated by stories from the Bible, was carried through systematically, and the children grasped it and were interested in recognizing and illustrating it in their own lives. Book excerpt: From the renowned author of Possession, The Children’s Book is the absorbing story of the close of what has been called the Edwardian summer: the deceptively languid, blissful period that ended with the cataclysmic destruction of World War I. In this compelling novel, A.S. Byatt summons up a whole era, revealing that beneath its golden surface lay tensions that would explode into war, revolution and unbelievable change — for the generation that came of age before 1914 and, most of all, for their children. The novel centres around Olive Wellwood, a fairy tale writer, and her circle, which includes the brilliant, erratic craftsman Benedict Fludd and his apprentice Phillip Warren, a runaway from the poverty of the Potteries; Prosper Cain, the soldier who directs what will become the Victoria and Albert Museum; Olive’s brother-in-law Basil Wellwood, an officer of the Bank of England; and many others from every layer of society. A.S. Byatt traces their lives in intimate detail and moves between generations, following the children who must choose whether to follow the roles expected of them or stand up to their parents’ “porcelain socialism.” Olive’s daughter Dorothy wishes to become a doctor, while her other daughter, Hedda, wants to fight for votes for women. Her son Tom, sent to an upper-class school, wants nothing more than to spend time in the woods, tracking birds and foxes. Her nephew Charles becomes embroiled with German-influenced revolutionaries. Their portraits connect the political issues at the heart of nascent feminism and socialism with grave personal dilemmas, interlacing until The Children’s Book becomes a perfect depiction of an entire world. Olive is a fairy tale writer in the era of Peter Pan and Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind In the Willows, not long after Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. At a time when children in England suffered deprivation by the millions, the concept of childhood was being refined and elaborated in ways that still influence us today. For each of her children, Olive writes a special, private book, bound in a different colour and placed on a shelf; when these same children are ferried off into the unremitting destruction of the Great War, the reader is left to wonder who the real children in this novel are. The Children’s Book is an astonishing novel. It is an historical feat that brings to life an era that helped shape our own as well as a gripping, personal novel about parents and children, life’s most painful struggles and its richest pleasures. No other writer could have imagined it or created it.
