Book excerpt: The award-winning author of The Peabody Sisters takes a fresh look at the trailblazing life of a great American heroine Thoreau s first editor, Emerson s close friend, the first female war correspondent, and a passionate advocate of personal liberation and political freedom. "Megan Marshall's brilliant Margaret Fuller brings us as close as we are ever likely to get to this astonishing creature. She rushes out at us from her nineteenth century, always several steps ahead, inspiring, heartbreaking, magnificent." Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, author of Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew Who Gave Us Modernity "Megan Marshall gives new meaning to close reading from words on a page she conjures a fantastically rich inner life, a meld of body, mind, and soul. Drawing on the letters and diaries of Margaret Fuller and her circle, she has brought us a brave, visionary, sensual, tough-minded intellectual, a first woman who was unique yet stood for all women. A masterful achievement by a great American writer and scholar. Evan Thomas, author of Ike s Bluff: President Eisenhower s Secret Battle to Save the World "Megan Marshall s Margaret Fuller: A New American Life is the best single volume ever written on Fuller. Carefully researched and beautifully composed, the book brings Fuller back to life in all her intellectual vivacity and emotional intensity. Marshall s Fuller overwhelms the reader, just as Fuller herself overwhelmed everyone she met. A masterpiece of empathetic biography, this is the book Fuller herself would have wanted. You will not be able to put it down." Robert D. Richardson, author of Emerson: The Mind on Fire Praise for The Peabody Sisters: Three Women Who Ignited American Romanticism A stunning work of biography and intellectual history. Deftly weaving material from the letters and journals of all three sisters, Ms. Marshall . . . performs the intellectual equivalent of a triple axel. William Grimes, New York Times This beautifully written book is at once an intimate portrait of three remarkable sisters and a study of women s place in the vibrant intellectual and literary culture of nineteenth-century New England. The product of twenty years of research, Megan Marshall s tour de force is impossible to put down. Drew Gilpin Faust, author of The Republic of Suffering "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As both an activist and the dynamic editor of Negro Digest, Hoyt W. Fuller stood at the nexus of the Black Arts Movement and the broader black cultural politics of his time. Jonathan Fenderson uses historical snapshots of Fuller's life and achievements to rethink the period and establish Fuller's important role in laying the foundation for the movement. In telling Fuller's story, Fenderson provides provocative new insights into the movement's international dimensions, the ways the movement took shape at the local level, the impact of race and other factors, and the challenges--corporate, political, and personal--that Fuller and others faced in trying to build black institutions. An innovative study that approaches the movement from a historical perspective, Building the Black Arts Movement is a much-needed reassessment of the trajectory of African American culture over two explosive decades.

Book excerpt: Spin Arrangements and Crystal Structure, Domains, and Micromagnetics deals with cooperative phenomena characterized by ordered arrangements of magnetic moments subject to strong mutual interactions. The emphasis is on the ferromagnetism, ferrimagnetism, and antiferromagnetism of magnetically ordered materials such as insulators and metals. Both theoretical and experimental points of view are presented. Comprised of 12 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to magnetism and crystal structure in nonmetals, followed by an evaluation of exchange interactions from experimental data. Subsequent chapters focus on the theory of neutron scattering by magnetic crystals; spin configuration of ionic structures; spin arrangements in metals; and permanent magnet materials. Fine particles, thin films, and exchange anisotropy are also considered, with particular reference to the effects of finite dimensions and interfaces on the basic properties of ferromagnets. The book also examines micromagnetics; domains and domain walls; the structure and switching of permalloy films; magnetization reversal in nonmetallic ferromagnets; and preparation and crystal synthesis of magnetic oxides. This book will be a useful resource for professionals and students with physics or chemistry backgrounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of Thin Films: Advances in Research and Development, Volume 6 reviews the rapid progress that has been made in research and development concerning the physics of thin films, with emphasis on metallic films. Topics covered include anodic oxide films, thin metal films and wires, and multilayer magnetic films. This volume is comprised of five chapters and begins with a discussion on the dielectric properties and the technique of plasma anodization which are relevant to the applications of anodic oxide films in electronic devices. Conduction, polarization, and dielectric breakdown effects are also considered. The next chapter examines studies on size-dependent electrical conduction in thin metal films and wires, paying particular attention to both classical and quantum size effects and some of the anisotropic characteristics of epitaxial metal films. The reader is then introduced to the optical properties of metal films and interactions in multilayer magnetic films. This text concludes with a chapter that looks at diffusion in metallic films and presents experimental results for phase-forming systems, miscible systems, and lateral diffusion. This monograph will be of value to students and practitioners of physics, especially those interested in thin films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Fuller (1754–1815), perhaps the most prominent Particular Baptist of the eighteenth century, has been the subject of much scholarly interest in recent years. No comparative study, however, has been done on the two biographies that give us much of our knowledge of Fuller’s life. John Ryland Jr. (1753–1826), Fuller’s closest friend and ministry partner, not only supervised the publication of Fuller’s works, but sought to give a careful accounting of his friend’s piety. But Ryland’s volume stood in contrast with the less-flattering portrait painted by publisher and pastor, J.W. Morris (1763–1836). This critical edition of Ryland’s 1816 biography provides contextual background and comparative analysis of the two volumes, and shows how Ryland amended his text for its 1818 republication in light of Morris' work. It also demonstrates the profound influence of Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) on Ryland’s biographical approach. While Edwards’s influence on Ryland and Fuller is widely known, this volume shows how Edwards’s biographical work, especially that of David Brainerd, influenced Ryland’s aim to promote “pure and undefiled religion” through recounting the life of his friend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First comprehensive study of this American original A cigar-chomping storyteller who signaled "Action!" by shooting a gun, Samuel Fuller has been lionized as one of the most distinctive writer/directors ever to emerge from Hollywood. In such films as The Steel Helmet, Pickup on South Street, Shock Corridor, and The Big Red One, Fuller gleefully challenged classical and generic norms—and often standards of good taste—in an effort to shock and arouse audiences. Tackling war, crime, race, and sexuality with a candor rare for any period, Fuller's maverick vision was tested by Hollywood's transition from the studio system to independent filmmaking. Now, in the first full account of all of the director's audaciously original work, author Lisa Dombrowski brings his career into new relief. The Films of Samuel Fuller features close analysis of Fuller's pictures and draws on previously untapped production and regulatory files, script notes, and interviews to explore how artistic, economic, and industrial factors impacted Fuller's career choices and shaped the expression of his personal aesthetic. Fans of Fuller and American cinema will welcome this in-depth study of a provocative director who embodied both the unique opportunities and challenges of postwar filmmaking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lon L Fuller's account of what he termed 'the internal morality of law' is widely accepted as the classic twentieth century statement of the principles of the rule of law. Much less accepted is his claim that a necessary connection between law and morality manifests in these principles, with the result that his jurisprudence largely continues to occupy a marginal place in the field of legal philosophy. In 'Forms Liberate: Reclaiming the Jurisprudence of Lon L Fuller', Kristen Rundle offers a close textual analysis of Fuller's published writings and working papers to explain how his claims about the internal morality of law belong to a wider exploration of the ways in which the distinctive form of law introduces meaningful limits to lawgiving power through its connection to human agency. By reading Fuller on his own terms, 'Forms Liberate' demonstrates why his challenge to a purely instrumental conception of law remains salient for twenty-first century legal scholarship.
