She can’t find one who sees the woman behind the hot Latina. Never mind one who revs her own engine. Palo Akana flies to fire. But he hides a past that he knows can never meet Maggie’s standards. Delderfield is a born storyteller." — Sunday Mirror To Serve Them All My Days is the moving saga of David Powlett-Jones, who returns from World War I injured and shell-shocked. He is hired to teach history at Bamfylde School, where he rejects the formal curriculum and teaches the causes and consequences of the Great War. Eventually David earns the respect of his students and many of his fellow teachers, against the backdrop of a country struggling to redefine itself. As David falls in love and finds himself on track to possibly take on the headmaster role, he must search to find the strength to hold true to his beliefs as the specter of another great war looms. To Serve Them All My Days is a brilliant picture of England between the World Wars, as the country comes to terms with the horrors of the Great War and the new forces reshaping the British government and society. Subject of a Landmark BBC Miniseries Includes Bonus Reading Group Guide WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: "Mr. Delderfield's manner is easy, modest, heartwarming."—Evening Standard "He built an imposing artistic social history that promises to join those of his great forebears in the long, noble line of the English novel. His narratives belong in a tradition that goes back to John Galsworthy and Arnold Bennett."—Life Magazine "Sheer, wonderful storytelling."—Chicago Tribune "Highly recommended. Combines tension with a splendid sense of atmosphere and vivid characterisation. An excellent read." —Sunday Express

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saga of the Logan family--made famous in the Newbery Medal-winning Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry--concludes in a deeply fulfilling story, now available in paperback. In her tenth book, Mildred Taylor completes her sweeping saga about the Logan family of Mississippi, which is also the story of the civil rights movement in America of the 20th century. Cassie Logan, first met in Song of the Trees and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, is a young woman now, searching for her place in the world, a journey that takes her from Toledo to California, to law school in Boston, and, ultimately, in the 60s, home to Mississippi to participate in voter registration. She is witness to the now-historic events of the century: the Great Migration north, the rise of the civil rights movement, preceded and precipitated by the racist society of America, and the often violent confrontations that brought about change. Rich, compelling storytelling is Ms. Taylor's hallmark, and she fulfills expectations as she brings to a close the stirring family story that has absorbed her for over forty years. It is a story she was born to tell.

Book excerpt: This is a history of major league baseball's first All-Star game, originally conceived in 1933 as a one-time "Game of the Century" (including greats such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Carl Hubbell and Lefty Grove) to lift the spirits of the nation and its people in the midst of the Great Depression. The game was so successful that it became a yearly event and an integral part of the baseball season. The work covers the game, from the Chicago Tribune's early advocacy for the contest through every play, and the later accomplishments of many of the individuals involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From there, she chose to become a secretary, and attended Temple Secretarial school in Washington, D.C., graduating in 1941. Eleanor has been writing articles and short stories for much of her life. While in mid-life, she wrote the story of her friend, Anne Wetzells, miraculous healing, titled, He Touched Her. She submitted her manuscript to a Christian Writers contest by Warner Press, Anderson, Indiana, where it won second prize and was subsequently published. In the 1970s, the Montrose School was scheduled to be demolished by the State Highway Administration. Director, Eileen McGuckian, of Peerless Rockville, rescued it. She asked Eleanor to write a history of the school she had attended as a child. Her book, Montrose School, The First Ninety Years, was published by Peerless in 1990. In the late 1990s, Eleanor discovered letters her father had written to her mother. Her mother had traveled from Maine to Kentucky to teach black children who had no public schools. Thinking this was a story that must be told, Eleanor set about writing her third book, Miss Apple, the Story of a Maine Teacher in Kentucky, published in 2002 by AuthorHouse. Eleanors gift for writing poems convinced her friend Eileen that they should be published, and another friend, Peggy Bjarno, agreed to compile her fourth book in 2003, Portraits in Poetry. In her book, All the Days of My Life, Eleanor tells how she became a Christian at ten years of age, and how that influenced the many important decisions of her life to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is Jesus Christ? You've never met Him in person, and you don't know anyone who has. But there is a way to know who he is. How? Jesus Christ - the divine Person revealed in the Bible - has a unique excellence and a spiritual beauty that speaks directly to our souls and says, "Yes, this is truth." It's like seeing the sun and knowing that it is light, or tasting honey and knowing that it is sweet. The depth and complexity of Jesus shatter our simple mental frameworks. He baffled proud scribes with his wisdom but was understood and loved by children. He calmed a raging storm with a word but would not get himself down from the cross. Look at the Jesus of the Bible. Keep your eyes open, and fill them with the portrait of Jesus in God's Word. Jesus said, "If anyone's will is to do God's will, He will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority." Ask God for the grace to do His will, and you will see the truth of His Son. John Piper has written this book in the hope that all will see Jesus for who he really is and will come to enjoy him above all else.
