This book was released on 2006 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Trevithick spent three years researching primary documents in New Delhi, Sarnath, Colombo, and London, in order to present this history (1874-1949) of the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya. This is the first such account, and it details for the first time the administrative, legal and legislative activities which shaped the temple`s current status as one of the world`s most popular pilgrimage sites. Also included is an innovative biographical essay on Anagarika Dharmapala, the Sinhalese activist who first came to India in the late 19th century as a guest of the Theosohical society: his subsequent actions substantially affected the development of Bodh Gaya as a site of international importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An End to Suffering is a deeply original and provocative book about the Buddha's life and his influence throughout history, told in the form of the author's search to understand the Buddha's relevance in a world where class oppression and religious violence are rife, and where poverty and terrorism cast a long, constant shadow. Mishra describes his restless journeys into India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, among Islamists and the emerging Hindu middle class, looking for this most enigmatic of religious figures, exploring the myths and places of the Buddha's life, and discussing Western explorers' "discovery" of Buddhism in the nineteenth century. He also considers the impact of Buddhist ideas on such modern politicians as Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. As he reflects on his travels and on his own past, Mishra shows how the Buddha wrestled with problems of personal identity, alienation, and suffering in his own, no less bewildering, times. In the process Mishra discovers the living meaning of the Buddha's teaching, in the world and for himself. The result is the most three-dimensional, convincing book on the Buddha that we have.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multilayered historical ethnography of Bodh Gaya the place of Buddhas enlightenment in the north Indian state of Bihar explores the spatial politics surrounding the transformation of the Mahabodhi Temple Complex into a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002. The rapid change from a small town based on an agricultural economy to an international destination that attracts hundreds of thousands of Buddhist pilgrims and visitors each year has given rise to a series of conflicts that foreground the politics of space and meaning among Bodh Gayas diverse constituencies. David Geary examines the modern revival of Buddhism in India, the colonial and postcolonial dynamics surrounding archaeological heritage and sacred space, and the role of tourism and urban development in India.

Book excerpt: This is the story of how the author realized Bodh Gaya of today isn't the Bodh Gaya where Lord Buddha had attained enlightenment. It is somewhere else. The Bodhi tree is long gone dead. The ruins of today's Nalanda isn't the Nalanda which Huen Tsang had visited in the 6th century A.D. The Chinese travelers Nalanda was razed to the ground. The only proof of where it once stood is a Naga lake and an eighty foot high bronze statue of the Buddha buried under the ground. Lord Buddha helped the author locate it. The latter broke the code of Huen Tsang's Indian mispronunciation causing him to successfully follow in the Chinese traveler's footsteps. He discovered the villages of Mudgaliputra and Sariputra who were both favorite disciples of Lord Buddha. He discovered two stupas in each village. One was an Ashokan Stupa to mark the place of their birth and the other to mark the spot where their mortal remains are enshrined. He discovered and filmed the ruins of the stupa which marked the spot where the Buddha met king Bimbisara after he attained enlightenment. And finally and the most important, he discovered who the Shakyas were in modern day India. Other important discoveries are the Pigeon monastery and Sariputras favorite disciple's stupa and village. All this in one exciting book.
